	♥ 10:21am Liz Berg: I regret to say I'm not so well-versed in philosophy. Spent most of my higher education in science labs. Read a few tomes here and there (Sartre, Derrida, etc), but I wouldn't say I subscribe to any in particular.

	10:25am bibi: on certainty is an aphorism greatest hits. so over 100 pages it's just unbearable if not from a funky one like cioran or kierkegaard...
	♥ 10:26am fred: @Liz: I may be French, but you probably know much more about French philosophy than I do. I tried to read those guys but wouldn't recommend them except as sleep aids. Though Marx and Keynes can't be beat for sleep-inducing, if all fails you can beat yourself to sleep, there are hefty works
	♥ 10:28am mariano: @fred: was gonna say, a conspicuous lack of French philosophers. Years ago, a friend of mine much better versed in philosophy than I am guided me through Nietzsche's Genealogy of Morals, which is a really tough but rewarding reading, another treasure trove of aphorisms, like most of his work.
	♥ 10:28am fred: @bibi: never tried Cioran or Kierkegaard. They look too sentimental for me, I may be wrong about that. I've a great track record of being wrong about stuff

For sure I hate Heidegger for bothering the reader with his horrible syntax constructions (more focus on syntax constructions than essencial ideas ... obnoxious). Russel was good in explaining things (read his history of philosophy). Wittgenstein helped to put the focus on building blocks of thoughts and kicked some inpulses into informatics. Walter Benjamin put the right questions long before the dawn of Andy Warhol.
	10:32am bibi: the best way to philosphy maybe remains the good old greek fashion, talking under a tree, or around a nice wfmu show. @fred, yr list suggested well you are not a sentimental one.

	10:36am doca: I think Walter Benjamin is an essential reading for today's world, one of the few writers I look for "guidance" (whatever that means).
	10:37am doca: Plus he's relatively easy to read, writing in a kinda poetic way.

	♥ 10:44am mariano: @fred: Nietzsche was always in bitchy mode too, which is why I like aphorisms, whether they make sense or not. He just seems like someone fun to sit with at a tavern and listen to him hold forth. Don't know if he has much status as a serious philosopher these days, but AJ Ayer has lots of really cool stories associated with him, like when he confronted Mike Tyson (Ayer was in his 70s and looked a good bit like Orville Redenbacher) and got him to back down.
	10:44am doca: Today's the 50th "anniversary" of Brazilian military coup d'état. I'm standing in expectation for the day to be over as the pile of shit celebrating it gets bigger and bigger (sorry for the bitter comment)

	♥ 10:53am Guido from Cologne: Classical Philosophy: different times and models of thinking. I actually read some Cicero's philosophical fictional debates of rivaling philosophical schools. Can be pretty odd to today's brain. Plato can be alsp pretty odd.
	10:54am doca: @Guido: that's true, but this concept doesn't do justice to his philosophy. Besides, I think most ancient philosophers or philosophers until the 19th century would fall on that category.

Russel had described Sparta (proto fashist military state) as the ancient Greek's ideal desire for law and order and in the following adds a quote by Aristoteles "you can get nothing working in Sparta without payola". Like it was Soviet Union already.

	♥ 11:08am mariano: Ancient Greek society, for all the talk of democracy, was, depending on the location, pretty undemocratic by our standards. For women it was something similar to living under the Taliban. And Plato's Republic? No theater (and presumably no TV or cinema then) and all music and poetry had to be in praise of the state? Sounds a lot like North Korea.

Though Marx and Keynes can't be beat for sleep-inducing, if all fails you can beat yourself to sleep, there are hefty works

Years ago, a friend of mine much better versed in philosophy than I am guided me through Nietzsche's Genealogy of Morals, which is a really tough but rewarding reading, another treasure trove of aphorisms, like most of his work.

For sure I hate Heidegger for bothering the reader with his horrible syntax constructions (more focus on syntax constructions than essencial ideas ... obnoxious). Russel was good in explaining things (read his history of philosophy). Wittgenstein helped to put the focus on building blocks of thoughts and kicked some inpulses into informatics. Walter Benjamin put the right questions long before the dawn of Andy Warhol.

He just seems like someone fun to sit with at a tavern and listen to him hold forth. Don't know if he has much status as a serious philosopher these days, but AJ Ayer has lots of really cool stories associated with him, like when he confronted Mike Tyson (Ayer was in his 70s and looked a good bit like Orville Redenbacher) and got him to back down.

Russel had described Sparta (proto fashist military state) as the ancient Greek's ideal desire for law and order and in the following adds a quote by Aristoteles "you can get nothing working in Sparta without payola". Like it was Soviet Union already.
