Hi Duane. Commenters: I just have to finish up a thought from Ken's board: My point about "detained" is that when a guy with a gun stops you, throws you in jail indefinitely, it's not being "detained"--it's worse than being arrested. It's a euphemism dreamed up by the Bush administration and again, swallowed whole by news media.

People on Guatanomo aren't being "detained," they've been imprisoned forever with no trial. That's essentially a kidnapping. OK, done with that. (I just said "essentially" which I'm not comfortable with either)

Hi All!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
mariano:

@dc pat & bibi (if you're still there): the difference in legal terms between being arrested and detained is that being arrested involves an official accusation and declaration, followed usually by incarceration. Being detained is something lighter, and it's usually applied to suspects or potential witnesses for questioning.

What's going on at Guantanamo is neither, it's simply locking the door and throwing away the key, an abuse which ironically was one of the primary grievances of the American revolutionaries against Britain.

Ok, back to the show!

@mariano: that's what I'm saying. They can't say arrested because of the legal baggage and everyone has just accepted it. They use detained for the Guantanamo inmates which just goes to show how meaningless the term is. I'm talking about common usage here...

@Sem Chumbo: I haven't seen that one yet. Will keep my peepers open for it.

@doca most metal goes over my head. to quote Sparks, "What Are All These Bands So Angry About?"

@robyn: Sabbath wasn't angry, too gloriously doped up and drunk -- punks were angry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm
mariano:

@chris: Speaking of pandas, here are pics which are simultaneously the cutest and most disturbing thing you'll likely see for a while: www.theguardian.com...

@Mariano - I'd like to see them try that with Polar Bears!

@mariano fair enough i have no idea. i just don't really like screaming and so have stayed far afield from metal/metalish bands.

mariano, thats amazing. thanks for sharing.

The first couple of Sabbath records aren't really metal - more like groove-heavy hard rock. Then they get progressively less interesting - fast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
mariano:

@robyn: Totally understand, and to be fair, much of their subject matter was really bleak, to say the least.

Hello fellow Duaniacs! Will be tuning into the archives, but had to chime in. I think this Queen Bee song would go well with thei King Bee one sung by John Belushi on SNL.

Yeah, all kinds of funny comments on the pandas: people saying they're location shots of a Japanese porn flick, or a sequel to Eyes Wide Shut. I think it'd be the perfect retirement job for Mick Collins!
