Wait for it, Parq.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:09am Uncle Michael:

Doug, I see you go with the four syllable pronuciation for "New Orleans." I'm a three man. When I try the two...it sounds like an affectation.
Avatar 9:10am dc pat:

dang, almost on time today..

With bated breath, Doug. Speaking of malapropisms, how many people think the expression is "baited breath". Yuck.
Avatar 9:13am still b/p:

The Smith Casey is good stuff, though I can't make out 90% of the lyrics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
There simply is no authentic two-syllable pronunciation. You only here it in certain songs where the lyricist needed an easy rhyme. My mother-in-law is a fine daughter of New Or-lee-uns, and so I come by my pronunciation honestly.

@Parq
It all depends on what you baited it with.

@still b/p
He was in prison at the time and doesn't give a shit what we comprehended.

I have a feeling Google mangles the translation. To me it's just "The seagulls are not mute." Anything but, in my experience.

Yes, indeed. Dark chocolate truffles make excellent bait.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:17am Uncle Michael:

Sorry, Doug. I've heard "Nawlins" countless times in the Big Easy. Just because your mother's people don't employ that linguistic variant, it's no evidence that it doesn't exist. I'm afraid we part company on this point.

I said 'good day,' sir.
Avatar 9:17am still b/p:

Are there decent compilations and deep academic delineations of "doesn't give a shit" blues?
Avatar 9:19am dc pat:

Thanks @parq, I now have a much deeper understanding of the phrase: www.worldwidewords.org...
Avatar 9:20am dc pat:

hmm, isn't "doesn't give a shit" the very definition of blues?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

A very big part of it, dc pat. Yes indeed.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:36am Alex In Illinois:

@Doug & Uncle Micaheal:
Back in the late 1980's, a friend from St. Louis moved to New Orleans to work and learn in the kitchens of restaurants. After being there for a month or two, she reported a 2 syllable "Nawlins" and at least two 4 syllable "New Or-lee-uns" pronunciations, one with the accent on the last syllable, and others with it on other syllables. She said the 3 syllable ones are used by tourists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Doug Schulkind:

Terp is the label owned/run by members of The Ex. If I had to guess, it would be short for "terrapin" or in other words = turtle.

Yes let's get back to food. Today is definitely Pizza Friday. I wouldn't think you would need tomato sauce on that pie--in fact it might get in the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

@βrian
I wonder what kind of bed music the Princess and the Pea would like.

Also: I come down on the gree-ott side of the gree-oh/gree-ott debate. I also say hommedge for hommage.

@earrie
You know I'm not sure about the sauce. I haven't inspected the recipe I cut-and-pasted yet. Thin crust, though. Fer sher.
  10:11am David Herskovits:

Fantastic stuff Doug! it is always a good friday when I can get to listen to GTDS.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:12am Jeff Golick:

Well that was fun. Managed to dig up Indestructible Beat, along with some other dusty, forgotten comps, including the insanely great Guitar Paradise of East Africa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

Here it is:

4 leeks, white and light green parts only
1 tablespoon butter
1/4 cup white wine
1/4 cup cream
salt to taste
4 pieces bacon
olive oil
4 ounces fresh goat cheese

Clean the leeks by slicing them lengthwise and running them under water until all the layers are clean. Roughly chop into 1 inch pieces. In a large skillet, melt the butter. Add the leeks, and cook over medium heat until they start to soften. Add the wine, and cook until absorbed. Add the cream, and cook until absorbed. Salt to taste and remove from heat. Meanwhile, chop the bacon into bite sized pieces and fry until cooked but not too crisp (it cooks further in the oven). Brush each pizza crust with olive oil. Arrange the leeks, the cooked bacon, and crumbled goat cheese over the top of each pizza. Bake at 500 degrees 15 minutes

There are two trombones on this tune. One is a contrabass trombone! (performed by Gérard Buquet. The other trombonist is played by Radu Malfatti who I know from all those great Brotherhood of Breath records.)

Looks like NO tomato sauce on the leek, bacon & goat cheese pizza. I think I will be going with prosciutto instead of bacon. Everyone OK with that?

Frippe was the nick name of saxophonist Bengt Nordström who was the leader of Miljövårdsverket. He played with Albert Ayler in the early 60s while Ayler was living in Sweden.

Arhoolie, the fruits of another great record store, one which happens to be in my neighborhood in the Bay Area. Down Home Records, like DMG, is also a wonderful joint for hanging out on do-nothing afternoons. I'll defer to Jeff G. re: directions to DMG, which I visited in January. It is not too far from a couple stops, but it's in Chinatown, downstairs. Bruce and Manny have had, I think, three sites. The shop is deceptively tiny. And they feature live shows most Sundays.

  11:27am Dean:

Doug, There is an acclaimed joint in El Cerrito, aptly dubbed Best Burritos, that doesn't do too badly. The owner is a fully trained Korean chef, though. For my money, though, you can't beat Molcasalsa on Beach Blvd. 450 miles south in La Habra. Probably can't make it there during a lunch hour, though.

  11:32am Dean:

Doug, Funny you mention Big Sur. I took the family to La Habra last week (and yes, we did visit Molcasalsa), and I considered returning via Big Sur, but I chickened out. In tribute, last night I played Charles Lloyd's Notes from Big Sur. But again, for burritos aim south to Los Angeles. There is, however, awesome Mexican fare nearby in Concord (once home of the eponymous record label, as long as we're making those connections!).

Kim Chee is a good thing to get when going out or buying from a vendor as opposed to preparing at home, because after preparing it at home, the smell that stays is not the most aromatic.

How does that Tom Waits lyric go?" "Stinks like Hell and the neighbors complain, I don't give a hoot what they say!" But that is for a different recipe.
