That Doug figure is interesting because the person I made up just now, "Mister Filbert," had a level of 0.0%

Release the DOUG DEMOS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm
Doug Schulkind:

I am a blithering imbecile in love with this Akira Ishikawa record, by the way. If I remember correctly, it was one of the first records I ever linked to on Mining the Audio Motherlode. I think the blog that first shared it was Crotchbat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I'm only 68.3% obscure.
Avatar 6:46pm

CROTCHBAT!

Mister Filbert was actually quite the rage in the early 80s.

Wait, I *have* that album! I've seen the cover in my itunes ... where did I get it?!?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm

There is surely a obscrurbble app coming out for Last FM that automatically computes your obscurity.

The Beatles are more obscure than Queen.
obscurometer.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm

It may also have to do with what you can hear on Last.fm.
Avatar 6:57pm

right Dave
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm

I don't know how accurate this is.. I think it goes by your top 30 and my top 30 is only about 1% of what I've listened to overall.

Yes, sitting in my apartment in East Germany and listening to someone playing music in Rhode Island via a station about 10 miles from where I was born, I begin to wonder what real is myself.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm

We're the 99%! <--------------[fist pump]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
davex:

Are Punch and Puncs related, besides being pronounced the same way (at least if you're from Northern England)?
Avatar 7:16pm
Jesse K:

not related at all but yea pronounced pretty much the same so the lazy wordplay caught my attention
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm
davex:

I'm all for lazy wordplay.
Avatar 7:33pm
Jesse K:

I didnt' realize actually until I just put this on that it's pretty much Billie Jean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm

The title is entirely different, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Gary:

Benko seems to be right, maybe? www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
davex:

Funky youtube link, Gary. But what was the question about his name? The ő (with the "long umlaut") is a long ö sound if that helps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
Gary:

I probably misunderstood/misheard Jesse: I thought he said Bank, with no O
Avatar 7:47pm
Jesse K:

here's his excellent race car video: www.youtube.com...
I was confused because they list him on his early albums as László Benk but later albums include the 'ő'
Hungarian language is a little confusing to me anyway
Avatar 7:47pm
Jesse K:

Benk, sorry my pronounciation isn't the best eaither
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
davex:

The ő is unique to Hungarian so it probably got dropped in some word processor. The pronunciation is about 99% regular in Hungarian, so that part of the language isn't too hard, for what it's worth.
Avatar 7:54pm
Jesse K:

I usually make it up differently every time though, I need somewhere I can hear people say the names of these guys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
Gary:

This is killing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm
davex:

You can just put it through Google translate and click the audio symbol. Or ask and I might have an idea or two.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm
davex:

Japan, Hungary, Haiti, going alphabetically backwards...
Avatar 8:03pm
Jesse K:

those are the languages you can help with?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm
davex:

Hehe, well for Haitian Creole just pronounce it like French but without the outdated spellings. I could help with Hungarian and other European stuff if you want. Your Japanese sounded fine to me.
Avatar 8:13pm
Jesse K:

thanks Dave, I try to make all mistakes with confidence. Or to play up the fact that I don't even speak english very well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
davex:

Your Haitian confidence sounded great to me.
Avatar 8:18pm
Jesse K:

I pattern it after a friend from Quebec, I try to think "French country gangster," though I'm sure that only leads me more astray. WHOOPS! Lost a signal there for a second I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
davex:

Are you playing the Famous Nyahururu Boys?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
davex:

You're back now.
Avatar 8:20pm
Jesse K:

ah, I saw it disconnect that time. Let me know if you get hiccups from here on out, ok?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm
davex:

Sure. The Famous Nyahururu Boys are 99.2% obscure, by the way. Pärson Sound only 89.5%.
Avatar 8:22pm
earrie:

+/- x %
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
davex:

Yeah, it helps to know someone who speaks the language. Or to spend some time in the place, of course, even if it's just a couple of weeks.
Avatar 8:26pm
Jesse K:

oh man, I cant' even compete with the regular stream...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
davex:

But you're 9.7% ahead!
Avatar 8:29pm
Jesse K:

The Famous Nyahururu Boys was the stream. I was playing the Pärsons. François Muduya is a solid 98.9 though
Avatar 8:30pm
Jesse K:

and Randy Salazar is 99.2% so I'm coming back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
davex:

Ah sorry, now I'm all confused. Anyhow, you're doing fine now. Interesting track, in any case.
Avatar 8:39pm
northguineahills:

Wow, that's back when they were a scorched earth blast! (Black Dice)
Avatar 8:42pm
Jesse K:

yeah quite a different sound! That track resolves into a locked groove, which I failed to fully exploit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
Gary:

whoa, was that part of the song?
Avatar 8:48pm
Jesse K:

what part? maybe a stream hiccup?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm
Gary:

It sounded like it could've been part of the song. It cut out, but one of Doug's obscure African records recorded in 1912 didn't cut in. Instead, crazy action of a synthesizer-being-eaten-by-a-porcupine nature occurred.
Avatar 8:52pm
northguineahills:

Wow, this last set has been gangbustin'!
Avatar 8:55pm
Jesse K:

@Gary, could have been in the song, it sounds like something I'd like!
@NGH, thanks! I'm gearing up to dj this weekend and trying to remember whats what
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
davex:

Thanks, Jesse - enjoyed all three hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm
Gary:

This was totally one of my favorite shows!
Avatar 8:58pm
earrie:

'synthesizer-being-eaten-by-a-porcupine'
That's gotta be 99.99%.

Thanks for the fine everything.
Avatar 8:59pm
Jesse K:

aw thanks guys! I had a great time tonight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm
davex:

And good luck again with that thesis!
