What can I say? I DO love my country -- so much that I refuse to give credit to the schmucks who run it now for what it once was, and could be again.

OK, maybe it never has been what it once was, but we're working on it!

i k e:

Love the show, but that CCR is so overplayed by evil commercial radio that there are "Fortunate Son"-shaped burn marks in the underlying auditory fabric of the space-time continuum (check your TARDIS, it'll show ya). When it started, I was hoping it would be a distorted Basinski-style disintegrating 8-track version or something. Digging Officer! though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30am
pacific standard simon:

Play the "Yankee Doodle" song, then, Nick -- it was always was a sarcastic number.
  12:35am
Nick Name:

ike - i like Fogherty , see where you are coming from though, commercial radio spoils a lot of good artists but won't stop me playing them -
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37am
pacific standard simon:

"Fortunate Son" is still a high water mark of righteousness. If you want a real fightin' and cussin' rant, though, try the (German/Canadian) Steppenwolf "America" trilogy.
  12:39am
P-90:

Happy American Independence Day, DJ Nick! Great set so far, an actual Yank couldn't have done it better.

Sometimes I feel like the only way to love the country where you were born is to beat it like a mule into the place where it wanted to be in the first place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46am
coelacanth:

the Steppenwolf i grew up with;the one that did a song called "monster" which included a section called "america" was from the usa.

But I have a creepy, ugly feeling that Hitler probably understood politics that way, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50am

@coelacanth - John Kay was a German immigrant; Steppenwolf was a Canadian band called Sparrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50am

Hi Pete L, in C-bus as well, with 'FMU.

yes i vaguely remember reading that about Kay. And i dont know about the sparrows; but Steppenwolf formed in the us.

(...technicalities.)
  12:55am
P-90:

@ pss/coel: Yes, Steppenwolf's a Canadian band, technically. But a great band, so really, what's the dif?

nick, finally got your marathon cd in the mail this week, good stuff
Avatar 12:56am
Droll:

Kudos to P-90 for being the first (and only) commenter to refer to the holiday by it's name. Remember it's a holiday celebrating overthrowing bad and ineffective government?
...And that's why NN has to work -- his side lost.
  12:58am
Cooh John:

@Pete L-Heard a good amount of Columbus bands on WFMU. I think Saintseneca would sound good as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00am
pacific standard simon:

"The essential core of Steppenwolf was the trio of John Kay, Jerry Edmonton, his brother Dennis Edmonton and Goldy McJohn from The Sparrows, originally Jack London & the Sparrows from Oshawa, Ontario,Canada." -- from Wikipedia

This is, essentially, the way I remember it. The difference is that it's always good to notice the sources of your critics, even when you agree with them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00am
coelacanth:

...after all these years!
...So,it was formed, for the most part as Steppenwolf was, before they moved to the us? .'always heard they were a "west coast" band. 'never looked into it.

okay, pacific s.s. ...Steppenwolf was one of my favorite bands -musically,AND spiritually, when i was growing up.
It'd bewildering that i never found out more about them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05am
pacific standard simon:

Congotronics kicks ass!
  1:05am
P-90:

@coel: Sure, in a sense they are an "American" , "West Coast", "Hollywood" band because their management, record company etc. were part of that establishment. Whether a band like that is really "American" or "Canadian" is a matter of how you're looking at it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13am
coelacanth:

P-90 -i appreciate that! But it does sound like i should call them "canadian",if i have to call them anything!
  1:14am

north american?

Doesn't the Canuck Government have a definition for Canadian Content? I'd consider that the final word.

marmalade kitty:

whats all the fuss?
  1:18am
marmalade kitty:

do you see magpies in north america?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18am
pacific standard simon:

I would call them one of the earliest international rock groups (not to be confused with international POP groups). But maybe that;s just hair splitting.
  1:20am
marmalade kitty:

ah, the black billed magpie
  1:22am
marmalade kitty:

a lot of Americans with ants in their pants today! :)
  1:23am
P-90:

My final ruling: for July 4th celebration purposes, they are an American band, suitable for play during even the finest fireworks displays. The band members were immigrants, and this is a nation of immigrants.
NOW: On to the next subject...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23am

@P-90 - Nope, your can of worms this time -- Steppenwolf = no good for 4th celebrations; CCR = OK for 4th celebrations.
  1:34am
marmalade kitty:

Bruce Springsteen born in the usa? Hendrix star spangled banner?
  1:35am
P-90:

"Born to be Wild": 100% fireworks-ready, has undoubtedly been used that way countless times

well if i go to the pub tonight (meaning after i sleep for the night then awake again),i'm playing on the jukebox Steppenwolf,CCR,dead kennedys, zero boys,Johnny Cash...(actually it depends a bit on who's there. i'm a considerate jukebox feeder.)

Take a lesson from these Chinese chaps in Carsick Cars, they have a song called "Everybody Comes To The City Now, Everybody Wants To Be Free But They Don't Know…"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40am
Ken From Hyde Park:

@Droll - The part where they planted the computer virus in the mother ship was pretty far-fetched. Actually, most of that movie was not believable. The CGI effects didn't look too fake.

@Ken: Yeah, the aliens were running Windows 98, right?
  1:45am

The Goldblum guy figured out the alien's entire system, found a hole in their security, designed a virus that would disrupt EVERYthing, in like what, 6 hours?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49am

Whut, I step away from the computer, Nick's playing British art rock, and I don't know WHAT you're talking about...

P-90, Most feature films are only 90 minutes. Goldblum's really slow and the director is very indulgent.
