Live performance by Gabriel Kahane

With the release of his "Craigslist Lieder" Gabriel Kahane created the perfect blur between mundane social media and mock artsong. Since then, Kahane has created increasingly gorgeous chamber-pop, showcasing his sweet vocal style, but always finding the beauty and humor in life. Gabe's latest album, "The Ambassador," draws inspiration from "Bruce Willis’ hair, detective fiction, modernist architecture, and race riots... a meditation on the underbelly of Los Angeles." Gabriel Kahane played live on WFMU.

Do you Brits celebrate any specific day as your Independence Day? I know about Guy Fawkes, but wonder if some other? Magna Carta Day? ;)

@Sean: Not enough time or "paper" for that! ;) Arriving in November from Boston, it was supernally magical at the get-go. Some aspects remained so -- like going from playing in the snow up in the mountains to playing in the surf all in an hour's drive. Traffic headaches are not exaggerated, and there are plenty of other demerits, but all-in-all, I sure preferred it over to Chicago. (where I moved to afterwards)

Really enjoyed that "Villains" track. I'm hearing a lot of lyrics about swindles and selfishness -- no lack of it in LA to be sure -- but I encountered so much more of that in Chicago and continuing on down here to my hometown, from the "upright Christian" community especially.

Sharon!

Tarifa! What a FANTASTIC song and album (Are We There)!!

To me, the final lyrics of this song are quite an excellent summary of the entire album: To Figure It Out. Which is what I think this entire album is about...Sharon trying to figure out the balance of life, etc. with being an artist. And a touring artist at that.

Tarifa was a welcome Time Out for her but I think it really brought home to her the struggle of, well, figuring it out.
