Party lines: they were a shared phone lines, with different rings for each customer. You could pick up and eavesdrop on who ever was talking.

Yeah, party line. Kids today don't know from party lines or waiting for the hours with cheaper rates to make long distance calls on Sundays.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:19pm

SO much cheaper on Sundays. Why call at any other time?

Party lines most recently were common in rural areas where not enough telephone lines were available for individual subscribers. Multiple houses had their telephones wired to the same lines. An individual would use a crank on the phone to summon the local operator at a central office and the operator would then connect the caller to the desired number. Because every home served by that that particular phone loop was always connected, one might hear another conversation being held if the circuit was already in use.It would always be possible to listen in on other callers. Crossed wires were the phenomena that would unintentionally allow a third party to overhear a phone conversation of others in conventional wired phone service.

Mike East:

there was a popsicle stick joke we read last weekend with the punchline "long distance calls" and none of the kids got it. Wasn't a good joke to begin with, but kids have no idea what a long distance call is anymore.

we had a party line in England when I was a kid - it was a shared telephone line (it cost less than an individual line). You'd pick up the phone and if there was a dialing tone, you could call, otherwise you'd have to wait until it was free. Our telephone # was (area code)211!
