@kat: yer cartoon reminds me of books on early Mad mag (high praise of course) - & fave book 'TheMonsterShow' by D.J.Skal ;
- being a Rawker & a retail cashier - it strikes home how I & Shoppers are literally like each other's Horror Show across Cultural lines
...& being born Nov.3 - Day & 'Dawn of the Dead' hold special interest...
- Joe Belock interviewed Dennis Diken about Bob Crewe - excellent...

Back to MAD: for his book review work, Philo was sent 3 beautiful coffee table books gratis. There are two in the MAD's Greatest Artist series "Mort Drucker: Five Decades of His Finest Work" (oddly w/a foreword by Michael J. Fox) and "Sergio Aragonés: Five Decades of His Finest Work," along with "The Art of Harvey Kurtz: The Mad Genius of Comics." Great reminiscences, esp. w/ Drucker's stuff.
Avatar 7:53am kat330:

This set of FMU DJ's works is topnotch. Thank you for bringing them to our attention, Frank!
Avatar 7:53am fxo:

especially Drucker's work; "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, etc."
Avatar 7:55am Philo Gristle:

It's amazing how well some of the early MAD stuff holds up. Drucker was my favorite as a kid and I aspired to draw like he did (impossible!). A lot of the early material still holds up beautifully.
Avatar 8:04am kat330:

@RevRab: BTW, a very belated "thank you!" -- was so excited you made the MAD ref, I wasn't mindful of my manners.
Avatar 8:05am kat330:

Ahhh, the unmistakable, groovy Green sound.
Avatar 8:05am Parq:

Conversely, the current iteration of Mad just hasn't got the spark of genius. Pick up a copy of Mad off the newsstand (if you can still find one) and you'll be shocked by the mediocrity of it. I would like the entire present-era "usual gang of idiots" to get off my lawn. G'morning, all.
Avatar 8:07am kat330:

Ohhh.. what a shame.
Avatar 8:07am Parq:

Digging the way that Al Green picked up the tempo there.
Avatar 8:08am fxo:

yo, Parq. Most likely, however, "Mad" is a step up from "Cracked".
Avatar 8:08am kat330:

When there's a tech mishap on a track I've star-clicked, I never know whether I should UNclick it. :/
Avatar 8:09am kat330:

Is this Harrison?
Avatar 8:10am fxo:

bad, bad CD!
Avatar 8:10am Parq:

Is there still a print Cracked? I thought they had switched entirely over to the frat-alum humor and commentary on their website.
Avatar 8:11am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- I got that - anyhow, I'm never mindful of my manners
- M. Drucker 85, & a Brooklynite ! makes sense - prob. right Parq sadly...how Mad was Cheap but a Keeper - remarkable...
- kat also right in Thx : A.M. rising especially hard for me of late - so Thx Morning FMU-Js !
- indeed kat: the 'Scruffs' were the hard-core fans loitering always outside Apple - but they were respectful & had some class...
Avatar 8:11am Philo Gristle:

It's been probably 20 years since I read MAD semi-regularly, though I've been known to pick it up at the grocery store to look at Aragones' gag page!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21am common:

good morning.
  8:24am P-90:

Sorry to say, I mostly gave up on MAD by 75-76 or so, the tide had already turned.
@Kat: Harvey KurtzMAN. Co-founder of the magazine, very underrated artist and writer.
And yes, Drucker's talent is transcendent. Beyond words.
Avatar 8:27am fxo:

morning, common.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27am common:

just found a collection of old mad toons on the street this weekend.
  8:27am P-90:

And don't get me started on Wally Wood, a bona fide genius if there ever was one. Had trouble in the 70's earning a living on what they were paying artists, despite staying up all night, working days at a time... Dr. told him his eyesight was going, he'd have trouble drawing eventually; came home and shot himself.
Avatar 8:28am kat330:

@P-90: Well, since I'm older than the hills, I had given up reading MAD before the '70s even hit. It was definitely a middle-school indulgence for me. Another influence on me -- esp. w/ homophonic punning and wordplay -- was Rocky and Bullwinkle.
Avatar 8:29am fxo:

Jay Ward rocked!
Avatar 8:30am kat330:

He did indeed!
  8:32am P-90:

@fxo: I don't know if you remember, Al Capp's name came up on the board here a month or two ago...? It's worth noting that a LOT of these MAD artists (and others) passed through his studio as apprentices, honing their craft by drawing and inking Abner, Daisy Mae, and the gang for the newspapers.
Avatar 8:32am Philo Gristle:

@P-90 With you on most of that. Kurtzman remains my favorite, and while I really like Wood's work, it never hit me like some of the others. I wrote a piece on the first two EC volumes recently done by Fantagraphics (Kurtzman & Wood) which elaborates on my thinking on these two: www.bookgasm.com...
Avatar 8:33am Sem Chumbo:

Multiple layers of communication going on in MAD, Rocky and Bulwinkle and those other Jay Ward cartoons, so a wide appeal to kids at various levels of development. I thought I was getting all the inside jokes. Much later, I knew differently.
  8:35am P-90:

@fxo: Funny you mention Jay Ward, just yesterday I scored a copy of the out-of-print "Rocky and Bullwinkle" coffee table book from a street vendor. One of those "Oh, I've been looking for that" moments.
Avatar 8:37am kat330:

@Sem: Philo gifted me a Rocky and Bullwinkle collection, so it was the first time revisiting that humor in decades. I'd gone on and on praising the program and how cartoons for kids today aren't up to snuff. Have to admit we've not made it all the way through the collection quite yet. Still some bits to make me smile, but not the ear-to-ear I remember as a kid.
Avatar 8:38am fxo:

definitely a find, P.
Al Capp who hated folkies, rock music, and hated John Lennon. But, the kickapoo joy-juice, yum...
Avatar 8:40am Sem Chumbo:

@Philo: thanks for the link. Nice to read reviews by practitioner rather than the *academic* types caught up in theory. Loved the link to Maltese Falcon & Hallowe'en.
@kat: ah, but we were so much younger then...
Avatar 8:42am Philo Gristle:

Yep, Kat introduced me to Rocky & Bullwinkle, which I never knew of growing up in Finland. Even when some of the humor doesn't work, it's always a feast for the eyes! Love the old hand-crafted look so much more than any modern flash or computer generated work.
Avatar 8:42am Philo Gristle:

@Sem Thanks, kindly!
Avatar 8:43am kat330:

What I'd forgotten was how much repetitive bits there were. Consolidated into a collection for binge watching like this instead of starting anew the next day, it is really noticeable and annoying for me (I'm not big on repetitiveness in anything, music either).
  8:43am P-90:

@Philo: To me, Kurtzman totally exemplifies that early-mid sixties comedy style, very smart and irreverent, along with Jay Ward and his cronies, Stan Freberg, Vaughn Meador who did the "First Family" comedy albums, and Bob Clampett in his post-Warners "Beany and Cecil" days. Jim Henson and Frank Oz were true products of that generation, too. Ivy-league beatnik types...
Avatar 8:46am Sem Chumbo:

@P-90: reminding me of the First Family albums, there is a story about Lenny Bruce performing on the night of the JFK assasination. He walks out on stage, looking downcast and shaking his head. As the crowd gets impatient, he looks up and out at them and says "Poor Vaughn Meader."
Avatar 8:47am kat330:

They may have undergone a rebirth in more recent years, but I think Saturday morning cartoons died when Clutch Cargo arrived and characters started looking like real humans. Gol that sucked majorly. And so CHEAP (which was why it was done).
Avatar 8:49am fxo:

what about "Crusader Rabbit"? wow I AM old!
Avatar 8:53am Philo Gristle:

@P-90 Exactly! What I see in today's 'product' is uncontrolled irreverence, lacking purpose. Kurtzman followed through. Interesting how his influence proceeded to the likes of John Holmstrom.

@Kat I've always disliked reality in comics and cartoons! Which is why I never got interested in superhero comics, while still enjoying the Franco-Belgian 'bigfoot' style comics, talking animals and assorted craziness.
Avatar 8:54am Sem Chumbo:

Thanks for this morning, Frank, and the Exciting Moments you attract from far and wide. Good sounds and talk. See you all next week, if the tidal river don't rise.
Avatar 8:56am kat330:

Echoing Sem, thank you, Frank! This has been a blast, and a blast from the past! Have a good 'un all and happy autumn!
Avatar 8:56am Philo Gristle:

Lovely sounds as always Frank, and a fine comments list. Thanks, owl!
  8:56am P-90:

Crusader and his pal Rags are the direct forerunners of Rocky and Bulwinkle. The style of humor is already there in embryonic form, and if you look at those episodes now, you can see how they were struggling to solve the then-new problem of producing animation cheaply enough for TV budgets. Of course Hannah-Barbera were working on the same problem...but that's another story.
Avatar 8:58am kat330:

@P-90: I'm not a fan of the Hannah-Barbera oeuvre. One of my pet peeves.
Avatar 8:58am Philo Gristle:

Hanna-Barbera never solved the problem!! I was excited to finally see Jetsons when it was re-aired in the late 80s, and was beyond disappointed. Pretty, but....
Avatar 8:58am fxo:

thanks to all of you.
Peace.
  8:59am P-90:

Thanks fxo and crew! nice piece, Philo!
Will discuss in future...
