good day, joe!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Jeff from Rahway:

R.I.P. Paul Revere. What time for The Figgs? I got a meeting @ 2. I hope it's a brief one (the meeting, that is)!
Avatar 12:09pm Joe B:

Hi everyone, thanks for tuning in! we will soon return to the land of the living with live music from THE FIGGS! plus at 2 pm Kim Shattuck of the Muffs on the telephone!
  12:10pm PJ:

There was also a pretty funny SCTV skit featuring Joe Flaherty as a washed-up Paul Revere playing at some kind of tiki bar.
Avatar 12:11pm Joe B:

the club was Cognac's Bottom of the Barrel! The piano stylings of Paul revere!

Hey, all of you kids. Get off of my...oh, it's Joe's crew. Good afternoon, Mr. Belock. Nice colonial soldier's unifrom you have on there. Like the bowl haircut. Hello, all.
  12:15pm Kevin:

Yeah Figgs!!!

'Just Like Me'=True Classic
Avatar 12:23pm d¢ pät:

I knew we could trust Joe B. on the P. Revere issue. Too bad I missed most of it.
  12:23pm chris:

Wow this stuff is seems well-produced for mid-60s
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Stevel:

Last three songs are pretty classic. Are they covers or originals. (Never knew stepping stone was pre Monkees.)
  12:24pm ken:

omg. i always dug them but to hear this extended set...

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:26pm efd:

Hard to choose a favorite, but "Great Airplane Strike" would be right up there.
Avatar 12:26pm Grok-o-matic:

You're right. Stepping Stone is not on headquarters. I was just saying that's a great album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Dominick:

Stevel - these are the originals
chris - Oh yeah! Great production value
  12:27pm Mark in Toronto:

Thanks Joe, this tribute means a lot. I was glad to see Paul Revere here at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) about 2 years ago.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Parq:

Wow, with all the other hits in mind, i completely forgot about "Good Thing" until today. Man, I played the shit out of this 45 as a kid.
  12:28pm Listening Out There:

Yes [blush] I did see the band once or twice. We of course cannot forget Fang's contribution. Anyone remember Fang?
🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:28pm tadpoles:

Brilliant thanks Joe. I always thought they were much better to listen to on record than watching their goofy antics on the TV shows.
Re Stepping Stone - I think there is a good doc on Boyce & Hart out. Sex Pistols also did it.
Cheers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Dominick:

Fang!
Avatar 12:29pm Joe B:

fang on lead vocal and songwriting on in my community
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Hoboken Jack:

I am going to have to finally pick up some Paul Revere!!
  12:32pm Listening Out There:

...Dominick knows...looks like Joe B did too. He was a guitarist who'd periodically flip over his guitar. "Fang" was spelled out on the back, in probably black electrical tape...
  12:32pm Ray:

Is something wrong with the online stream? Mine gets stuck on buffering and cant hear a thing. Help!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:33pm efd:

I'm listening to the 128k stream with no problems. Which stream/player are you using, Ray?
Avatar 12:34pm d¢ pät:

I love their goofy antics on TV. We need more groups doing synchronized dance moves..
  12:36pm John L.:

Criminally underrated. Well, they were underrated by me until I started listening to WFMU. Growing up all I ever heard was "Indian Reservation" and, maybe, "Kicks." I seem to remember them on T.V., maybe American Bandstand, deliberately screwing up their lip syncing.
Avatar 12:37pm d¢ pät:

Sonics version of Louie Louie is the best in my book.
  12:39pm Cormac:

FIGGS give good GIGGS
Avatar 12:40pm d¢ pät:

Although I'm a big fan of Richard Berry's version..
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Stevel:

Anyone ever put together a Stepping Stone comp? there was a station in Madison, WI in the early 80s that, having been sold, played Louie Louie for about 48 hours straight, mostly the Kingsmen version with Black Flag, USC Marching Band and others mixed in. Great weekend to be working in the darkroom.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Hoboken Jack:

"In case you were wondering, I don't get paid to do this." Hahaha!!
  12:41pm Ray:

All fixed. Thanks for the help.
Avatar 12:43pm d¢ pät:

man, the things you learn from Joe. Didn't know that PR and Rs recorded Stepping Stone before Monkees or that they did Louie Louie before Kingsmen...
  12:45pm Thee Bluesman:

Joe, hope to see you at the Muffs FRIDAY night. I actually bought tickets so's I don't lame out. Only missed one NY/NJ area Muffs visit (the last one) since they first touched down at The Beat in Port Chester so many years ago! Looking forward.
  12:45pm Listening Out There:

While "Indian Reservation" is the band's best known tune, IMO it's not one of their best
  12:46pm Tex:

I'll give you the label and LP info Joe. Sounds great.

Avatar 2:18pm Bad Ghost Zero:

The Muffs played Pixies' "Manta Ray" at that Maxwell's show.
  2:19pm John L.:

Here's the headline:Black Francis on Pixies bass player changes: 'Big woop-dee-doo... it ... big woop-dee-doo… as far as we're concerned it ain't that big of a deal.' I like the Pixies, but the new album is pretty dull. The new Muffs, however, is great.

New Brunswick residents who can't make it to Saturday's Muffs show might want to ask around for the address that Upset are playing that night.

Missed this -- but thanks for such a great set from Paul Revere and The Raiders -- missing only their classic Let Me -- great stuff - thanks!
  11:40am Mark in Toronto:

Joe, you played a Raiders song between "Ain't Nobody Can Do It Like Leslie Can" and "In My Community" that isn't on the playlist. What was it?
12:13pm ya didn't play Legend of Paul Revere:

@Mark in Toronto:
song "Louie, Go Home" IS listed . . . in transposed sequence

@Joe B, who said Raiders recorded Stepping Stone before the Monkees: However, song co-writer Bobby Hart in the Monkees Season 1 DVD set contradicted:

“The closing of the [Monkees' live concert] show in 1966, '67 was Steppin' Stone. I believe this was before [flip-side] I'm a Believer came out [Nov. 1966] which later became the closer. But this is I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone which Tommy [Boyce] and I had originally written for Paul Revere & the Raiders and they turned us down but ended up recording the song as a cover to the Monkees. After the Monkees hit Paul Revere went back in and recorded it and it was an album cut for them as well [released May 1966]. A lot of kids tell us that this was the song they learned to play guitar on, or, I guess this turned out to be a garage band anthem. I don't know why maybe because it's basically a repetition of 4 chords and maybe sounds like more than it is. But this song has been re-recorded by a number of probably more other artists than any Monkees song with the exception of maybe I Wanna Be Free, including the Sex Pistols which had a pretty wild version of Stepping Stone."

Been playing Raiders in the car all summer . . . Hungry . . . Good Thing . . . Found a couple bootleg YouTube clips from their Happening TV series which Dick Clark won't release, nor Where The Action Is
Avatar 1:07pm Joe B:

Raiders' version was first, 100% regardless of what Hart says. Raiders release May 6, 1966. Monkees' version released Nov. 1966. Not even close.
Avatar 1:08pm Joe B:

I assume Hart is confused about being turned down. Boyce & Hart were pushing it to them to be their next single. It was just an album track. That is likely what he means by 'turned down.'
