Now, you're either on the bus or off the bus. If you're on the bus, and you get left behind, then you'll find it again. If you're off the bus in the first place — then it won't make a damn.

  10:34am Listener Gregory:

Doug, did you hear any of Cecil Taylor's interview after that legal case was resolved? It was very "divergent" and quite entertaining to hear the reporters try to get him to answer their questions. BTW, I don't think he got all the money back, by any means. Sad.
Avatar 🥁 10:34am duke:

I saw Raphe Malik many years ago. The opening group was pretty poor, but Raphe's set was amazing. Then he said now we're going to bring out "name of opening group" to join us. I thought, oh no this is going to be bad. Just the opposite, Malik set them on fire. Totally fantastic set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Yooks! I wasn't aware that Taylor didn't get the money back. I didn't hear the interview, but I read an account of it.

Malik is one of about a gazillion trumpeters who died absurdly early. Heartbreaking.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:39am Alex In Illinois:

@tr:sh: agreed. I think Cecil Taylor is something that had to have emerged at some point.

@duke: I guess Malik knew that the opening act could play better than they were, felt sorry for them for having a bad night, knew what was needed to get them going, and ended up giving them and the audience a good night after all.

And I agree about Raphe. Great underrated trumpeter.

  10:57am Dean:

Big Jay, 1951! True story: in the late '90s, BJM played a regular gig at an old night club in Santa Fe Springs, CA, the Rim Ram. His band included a woman on B3, a drummer, and a transvestite back-up sax player whose elderly mother came to hear her son. We heard Big Jay several times, once on New Year's Eve with a group of Swedish exchange students. Best NYE ever. BJ would stick the bell of his horn three inches from your face and blast until you'd stuff a dollar in it. BJ was working for USPS at the time, but his foot was in a cast, so he was out on disability. Not long thereafter I recall reading Robert Palmer's review in the NYT of BJM's debut in London, after which his musical career had revived.

  11:29am andujar:

And speaking of Boston, MFA, Lizard Lounge, The EX & Ethiopian music...Hugo, you need to check out Debo Band someday. They sometimes do a residency at the LL, they sometimes play at the MFA and they played a couple times in cambridge with The Ex. Awesome Ethiopian grooves with the twist of adding accordian, sousaphone, heavy guitar, etc to the mostly traditional compositions. One of Boston's finest bands.

And speaking of Spearman: another great underrated artist. The first time I ever heard him and Raphe Malik they were playing in the same band at UMass. From teh very first note it hooked me. Just a powerful sound. The concert I am talking about was released on eremite as "The Short Form".

My one experience with Weirdo was formative. I ditched a conference I was attending to visit the store for the first (so far, only) time.
