I'm going to echo yr sentiment Dave, but that Davies line about privacy seems downright quaint when considering when it was written. Especially considering everything that comes after....

@adrian: Absolutely. He didn't realize how good things were in '71.

  10:42pm
P-90:

In the 70's, the Hypgnosis team deliberately kept a low profile, they enjoyed having a little air of mystery surrounding who they actually were. I remember "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" and "Wish You Were Here" were two of theirs that everyone knew and talked about. And rolled joints on.

Pretty piano. Barron + bass is lovely. I know the Haden/Barron album but not this one. Pretty piano and bass.
  11:00pm
P-90:

pss: if "precious" can mean "self-consciously clever, flashy, inventive without subtlety, commercial art that attempts to draw as much or more attention to itself as to the thing it's promoting",
you're right.
  11:03pm
JakeGould:

Hipgnosis was precious when they were bad. For example the cover to “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” is quite a prime example of that. So bullshit when you think of it.

Rich Hazelton would like those Hipgnosis visuals.

Carmichael:

Boy, everyone seems to be full of piss and vinegar tonight.
  11:10pm
P-90:

Yeah, stuff that looked so "original" and "radical" because it broke with traditional design styles at the time can look a little shallow and naively gimmicky a few decades later. Also, when you make a big impression with something "different" and "quirky", new clients flock to you for something "different" and "quirky" in the same way as what you've already done. So you wind up cranking things out in a "house style" that quickly loses it's novelty.
  11:15pm
JakeGould:

Is this the original Carole King version?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
pacific standard simon:

Mind you, the cover of Pink Floyd's A Nice Pair worked BECAUSE it was a collection of gimmicks and cheap jokes, enclosing a re-packaging of old material.

I burned some rice on the bottom of a pan one time and when I let it soak in vinegar, the blackened bits finally came loose. Soap & scrubbing weren't getting them off.

JakeGould:

“I burned some rice on the bottom of a pan one time and when I let it soak in vinegar, the blackened bits finally came loose. Soap & scrubbing weren't getting them off.” What I usually do in a case like that is boil water in a pot, then pour that water into the pan with a little vinegar and salt. Let that simmer for a while. Then I drain that cleaning brine away and scrub. Works!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm

Thanks, Jake. In other helpful household hints, I understand vinegar on shower tiles can help stave off mold & mildew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm

Also, if you're trying to cut down your salt intake, small amounts of vinegar can enhance the flavor of food in the same way that salt does.
