Hello Gents.

Davy or Davey?
Avatar 12:08pm
Jeff J:

Hey Pacific Standard Simon! And hello Brian in the UK! Apparently it's both Davy and Davey. It seems the "e" was sometimes added later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm

I wonder if Wayy Gravy ever met Davy? In the navy?

Speaking of Davy/Davey -- did anyone out there ever make it through Georges Perec's A VOID?
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 12:14pm

Dean, I am guessing our equivilent would be the West Midlands, Robert Plant country.

Makes me want to hear Charlie Byrd's extended jam, "Fantasia on Which Side Are You On". A staple of my childhood.

@Jeff: That's the one where Perec doesn't use the letter e, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Jeff Golick:

Heyo, it's @Artie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Jeff Golick:

@doca: Yup. No e in the French original, nor in the English translation!
  12:19pm
Dean:

Perec eschews "e" in his French original, and then a heroic translator managed to do it in English, too.

Ever try Russell Hoban's Riddley Walker. He invents a new language with mixed results. One of his other titles, 'The Mouse & His Child' is peerless.

If you're going to mess with experimental fiction, this is the way to go:

@pss: Agreed. Seems an amazing document, though have only read about it; never held a copy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm

And @Brian: that's a no for me on Hoban.
Avatar 12:31pm

Yeah, I never read any of Perec novels, though mostly seem very interesting. Maybe it's a 2015 resolution to read some of them.

Perec's great ones are Life: A User's Manual, W: Memory of a Childhood, Species of Spaces, and A Man Asleep. All wonderful.

Humument is lovely, PSS. Though I've only seen the 4th edition. Wonder how the others compare, if there's a preferred version?
Avatar 12:35pm

Thanks, Jeff J! I've always wanted to read W, maybe I'll start with that.

Regarding Humument, just found this itunes.apple.com...
  12:35pm

I'm working on a novel in which I studiously avoid the string "toejam." It begins, "Call me Toejam." I'll need to revise that.

@doca The libraries over here are under threat from financial cuts. Does the same apply in Brazil?
Avatar 12:39pm

And if folks are on the experimental fiction tip, there's this novel called MIRA CORPORA you might want to check out.... j.mp...

Thanks DOCA. Interesting to see he's up to six editions of Humument already!

Thanks, @pss. Alas, though pages don't seem enlargeable?

Sorry, he's taken it down.
Avatar 12:49pm
doca:

@Jeff J: Your book is not available on Kindle, right? It's easier for me to get literature this way.
@Brian: I think libraries in Brazil first need some financial to have a financial crisis. I don't think there is a national policy for public libraries over here and they don't have the same relevance they have in other countries. I think it is up to the city administration to oversee that, and that changes every four years when the elections are held and new guys come sweeping the town.

This sounds much like the piece Joelle Leandre performs with a hideous shriek. She's playing in Oakland, solo, at Phil Gelb's flat soon: http://philipgelb.blogspot.com/2014/11/joelle-leandre-dinnerconcert-sunday.html
Avatar 1:02pm
doca:

@Jeff: Oh sorry, I haven't seen it. Thanks! And yeah, I put the emphasis wrong over there. Language issues.
@Brian: Yeah Brazil has a lot of issues of shrinking public spaces. The problem is when those public spaces didn't existed before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
Jeff Golick:

@Dean: that sounds like a pretty sweet scene. I'm hoping, for my upcoming birthday, to make it to a similar sort of thing here, w Ideal Bread: beverleyconcertseries.tumblr.com

(why veg/macrobiotic, tho?)
  1:13pm
Dean:

The Lacy tribute band? That would be amazing. I've heard Leandre, David Murray, Mark Dresser, and Oliver Lake at Phil's place. Can't beat sitting at a dinner table passing the bottle of wine to David Murray.

Gelb is a dedicated vegan/macro guy. When he's not playing shakuhachi, he offers cooking classes. The meals are sublime. I think he's decided to wrap up the concert series, though.
