A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

And today's art -- so good! Last week I checked out a couple books from the library that have Kenojuak's work in it - I love it so much.

@common - yeah, i wasn't paying attention, and suddenly i heard a huge bang and cars were sliding everywhere, including in my general direction. brave person that i am, i jumped behind a steel railing because i was scared they might skid onto the sidewalk. (they didnt)

good morning all. yes tome, that is a good think to think about today...i am trying.

@canterbury it was good! I kinda wish it was longer even though its 2hr 35 min.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

@SeanG As a Pynchon freak I wasn't sure what to think when I heard it was being made into a film. But it seems to have had the author's blessing, so I'll certainly be going to see it.

Gotta admit, Shirley is hurting my brain a little bit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

@b23 I hate to say it, but there's an edge to her voice that grates slightly upon mine ears. I'm more of an Anne Briggs kind of elf.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am
Guido from Cologne:

Shirley sounds unusual on this recording. Some "old-maid" kinda voice. A bit like a Josephine Foster.
Avatar 9:50am
redkayak:

@b23 ... Yes, but my sinuses ARE clear now ;)
Avatar 9:50am
sphere:

a lot of Child balladeers (from UK or US) are kinda abrasive. for example, Jean Ritchie grew up in the Appalachians and her vocals can be hard to take.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am
braveness23:

@redkayak, I think that was the recorders. They'll clear you up right skippy
Avatar 9:54am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- huh - don't find ShirleyC grating - guess I 'interpret' the 'severe' quality in her vox as being the 'serious' quality of it - both in terms of the dark side of the Folk Tales, & in her being a bit of an Authority of Folk...
Avatar 9:55am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...her voice seems an expressive instrument to me...

I love this film! So true
Avatar 9:58am
redkayak:

@rev That is true. Heaven knows no one wants to hear ME sing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am
Guido from Cologne:

Shirley's voice being absolutely voiud of vibrato can be stressy in times - which is not to be understood against her skills. But this recording here was very special. Usually her voice is much mor light and clear. She seems to have slipped into a certain persona.
