coelacanth:

i'm loving hearing it again. even though i still have the record,i haven't played it in years.
it's pretty scratched.

Woah, sharp left turn there. Wasn't quite ready for that. (Though I should have been.)

Nick, great tunes!

My kids complain about being bored. I would love to be bored once in a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45am
Ike:

Hey Pseu, I liked your fill-in for Chris T. I listened via the archives yesterday. I like the Shoprite talk, heh. Ah, the Can Can sale!
  12:55am
JakeGould:

Shoprite? Waldbaums 4 Eva.
  1:01am
JakeGould:

Nick! Crazy! Just got “Goodbye Babylon” and Rev. A.W. Nix is one of the most memorable preacher tracks. This guy’s consistent, grovelish cadence.

Waldbaums? Too expensive. Owned by A&P, price gougers extraordinaire. Too bad the Brooklyn Shoprite is so much more pricey than NJ Shoprites. You'd think they'd standardize the fucking prices if they're going to advertise themselves as a proper chain, but nope....
  1:07am
JakeGould:

Ike, A&P bought them in 1986. I still have memories of them before they genericized them… When Mrs. Waldbaum’s face was on all of the cans. I can’t find any nostalgia ephemera for that stuff online but it’s etched in my head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12am
Ike:

Oh wow, her face was on all the cans?! Weird. That was way before my time in this area. But I get it. My 80s grocery nostalgia: A long-extinct little Safeway in MD w/strange arch-heavy 60s-style architecture.
  1:17am
JakeGould:

Odd but I can’t find a picture of her face. But much like Frank Purdue and Tom Carvel, Julia Waldbaum was the actual owner of the place. And had a hands on approach with local store. Another planet compared to Trader Joe’s where it’s just random guys in Hawaiian shirts. jwa.org...

Ike:

I'm sure TJ's also had a more human touch before the Germans bought it, but at least they're still (mostly) friendly (w/some exceptions at the Brooklyn store) and the prices are REALLY low for such good quality stuff. I buy a lot of stuff at TJ's.
  1:23am
JakeGould:

I mainly stop by Trader Joe’s for free samples and leave. They’re an excellent stop for a quick freebie before doing anything else around Court Street.
  1:33am
rw:

This may not be such an issue in NY, but does the parking at Trader Joe's suck like it does in CA? There's a newer one near my house that was built on open land. They could have designed the parking any way they wanted and they made it completely ridiculous. I feel like maybe it's a trademark or something.
  1:34am
rw:

Oh, and Jake, how do you like that "Goodbye Babylon" box? I keep thinking about getting one as a gift but it's a little on the pricey side.
  1:37am
JakeGould:

I think it’s pretty great. Don’t regret purchasing it. But I got it digitally. The physical set comes in a small cedar box with raw cotton. A bit gimmicky, but quite nice as far as gifts go.
  1:38am
JakeGould:

In NYC all of the Trader Joe’s are geared towards commuters. So the worst parking issue is just dealing with the lines. But I don’t really shop there. I am basically a free sample remora.

Parking is not easy at NJ's Trader Joe's locations either, RW. Chain-wide issue. Glad I can take the subway to the Bklyn one now.
  1:41am
rw:

Thanks Jake. I have a client/friend who's enamored with the south and does a trip there every year. Maybe next time I'm thinking about it I'll click the buy button.
  1:46am
JakeGould:

RW, I would also recommend, “This May Be My Last Time Singing : Raw African-American Gospel on 45RPM 1957-1982” The packaging doesn’t have cutesy gift stuff, but it explores the world of gospel 45s. www.tompkinssquare.com...
  1:47am
rw:

Speaking of TJ's, I have a friend in Kansas City who tells me they don't have them there because in KS it's against the law to sell liquor in a store with other items. Liquor only in liquor stores. It's legal in Missouri, but I guess they wouldn't be able to put in enough stores on the MO side to make deliveries worthwhile.
  1:49am
rw:

Jake, that one looks cool too... much more in my price range.
  1:51am
rw:

Actually, I might get one of those for myself... just what I need. More music.
  1:55am

Good eve.

finally hello all - thx for checking in - apologies , been busy here….i missed talk of Tom Carvel…ha ha
  2:04am

Ike: Weird, huh? Makes no sense at all to me.
  2:10am
rw:

Hey Nick! Enjoying the show as always.
  2:11am
Dean:

Skip the Grosskopf and go straight for the Cosmic Jokers!
  2:15am
Dean:

Kansas City TJ's #720 is right on the state line. Bummer. Here in CA, both north and south, parking is ALWAYS a bitch, selection varies, and prices aren't always competitive, but it's still a regular stop for me.
  2:15am
Nick Name:

thx rw / @ Dean : welcome…i gotta play them soon , thx for the nudge
  2:17am
Dean:

In keeping with the Trader Joe's topic, there is a Cosmic Jokers album called "Galactic Supermarket."
  2:18am
rw:

Dean, so they DO have one in KC. It must be newish...
  2:19am
Dean:

There are two in KC, but only one near Kansas.
  2:20am
Dean:

Apologies for monopolizing the comments board, but right now Grosskopf sounds mightily like Cosmic Joe's, I mean, Trader Joker's, er, Cosmic Jokers.
  2:34am
Hel:

Greetz to all, I can't talk much..gotta do housework. Is Svart the label Jess & The Ancient Ones is on?
  2:37am
Dean:

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess you haven't played Isotope (Gary Boyle). Given this set, I think you might want to explore.
  2:45am
JakeGould:

Dean: Waldbaums or ShopRite.
  2:45am
JakeGould:

Also: Met or C-Town.
  2:48am
Dean:

Yeah, but, see, my kids have good relations with the checkers at our Trader Joe's. We visit them pretty regularly. My kids find the hidden bear or lobster and they get a lollipop. Doesn't work in Sir Tim Berners-Lee's world.
  2:52am
Nick Name:

hi Hel - yes, same label
  2:54am
Hel:

Thanks Nick, sorry that I missed most of your show but i'm checking out the playlist now and gettin an education.
