I could do my radio show in my sleep at this point. Putting the radio show together, however, requires toothpicks to keep my ears open, if not my eyes.
  11:14am Dean:

Thanks, Doug.

@Alex: Many people who don't like cilantro are so-called supertasters, whose sensitivity to certain flavors, particularly bitter ones, is unusually strong. See, e.g., http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=98695984

@Robert, No preference. I tend to consume it during happy hour at the corner bar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

Nice to see you, Alex in Illinois!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

A predisposition to find cilantro revolting has been found to be genetic. My mother, sister and daughter share my distaste for it. My mother will get violent with a waiter if cilantro is a dish she orders having first asked if it contained the herb. My wife thinks we're all crazy and loves cilantro.
  11:19am Dean:

@Doug, Your wife could be correct. There is a genetic basis, too, for craziness.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:20am Alex In Illinois:

Hi Doug. I have been listening since the start. Started out in my car with the smartphone app playing as I was arriving to work.

Supertasters? Nonsense. I viscerally loathed cilantro until I tasted it in context. The scales fell from my tongue!

Cilantro is one of those hotly debated tastes that, upon tasting it, made me wonder where all the debating heat and adamancy comes from. It's not like Icelandic hákarl or sumthin'. It's that "no accounting for" thing...in decorating, art, music or herbs.
  11:28am tr//sh:

@b/p What does hákarl taste like??
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:28am Alex In Illinois:

@Doug: the NPR article does not conclude that Supertasters are the ones that hate cilantro. Instead in concludes that it is the smell that makes a difference, and the cilantro haters are not detecting the aromatic compounds, but are detecting mostly the malodorous unsaturated aldahydes compounds. The article does conclude that it is genetic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

Now I'll play the good stuff, duke.

I read somewhere that everyone excretes the asparagus compound in their urine, but not everyone can smell it.

While I like cilantro, the possibility of even trying hákarl is so far away I couldn't see it even if I had my own personal Hubble.

Before they settled on "Everybody plays the fool...", The Main Ingredient considered a version of the song that said, "Everybody excretes the asparagus compound in their urine..."

I my pre-epiphanic state, I perceived the flavor of cilantro as being akin to licking a 9-volt battery or eating detergent. Now, hot/sour/cilantro is my holy culinary trinity.

Now that I know that hákarl exists, I will have to try it, as long as it does not jiggle like jello.

@βrian: When I was a kid, the St. Louis zoo used to have free-roaming peacocks walking around there all summer. And yes, we became familiar with the hi-ya calls they would utter.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:48am listener james from westwood:

@UM, a friend of mine lived close enough to a zoo w/ peacocks that he could hear them from his window. The zoo's capybara, unfortunately, was silent and stoic as usual.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:50am Alex In Illinois:

Don't DSLRs have an F stop setting? Or did F stop get replaced with another term, the way ASA became ISO?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:51am Uncle Michael:

Alex, yes...anyone that knows how to use a dslr knows what f-stops are.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:52am Parq:

@Uncle Michael: Good, because I have been thinking of buying one soon, and would not buy one if it didn't.
@Doug: The average point-and-shoot digital camera usually does not have an F-stop control, but a DSLR is a Digital SRL, so it is a digital camera with F-stop control (and all of the other good stuff that SLRs have).
