Doug Schulkind:

THEY SAID IT COULDN'T BE DONE. You simply can't do a marathon show — and give away prizes yet — on a prerecorded show. Every year, station manager Ken Freedman freaks out at the notion. Every year, music director Brian Turner strains a muscle in extreme skepticism. And every year, Tony Coulter proves them all wrong! In fact, this is Tony's FIFTH year marathoning on Give the Drummer Radio.

But this only works if listeners pitch in and pledge their support. Help Tony continue to defy the odds and confound the experts while donating in honor of his incredible broadcast!

Use the pledge box atop this page to pledge specifically to Tony's show. Do it now and then sit back and bask in the glow!

THE GLOW!

Only Tony's show is prerecorded (for a variety of technical reasons). The rest of the Drummer Stream shows are all live live live!

Here's a little story that illustrates the wonder that is Tony's Tape Hiss program. I got an email the other day from a old-time WFMU listener who lives in Pittsburgh. Last year, I went to a show wearing a WFMU shirt and the guy saw it and introduced himself as a big fan of the station. We struck up a conversation and now a friendship. Well I got this email from him the other day:

Yesterday Zombo [a local DJ on Carnegie Mellon's radio station] played a track from a group named Plastic Eye Miracle. It was lo-fi audio collage, the sort of thing that I appreciate, so I set out to learn more about the group and locate some of their recordings.

Discogs reports that the group originated in Ohio and was active during the late eighties and early nineties. All of their material was released on self-published cassettes.

A Google search revealed two things right off the bat. The original album titled Plastic Eye Miracle was from an evangelist named Ronald Coyne who claimed that he was able to see through his plastic eye due to divine intervention. Also, an album with that title from noise rockers the God Bullies came out in 1990.

References to Ronald Coyne and the God Bullies dominated the Google search results. I had to sift through many pages of results and experiment with several different search parameters to locate the playlist from Tony Coulter's Tape Hiss show in which he featured the group Plastic Eye Miracle. Comments for the show were very positive, so that encouraged me to continue my quest.

So you see, Tony's Tape Hiss is one of the few places to come when you want to hear rare and unheard cassettes by the likes of Plastic Eye Miracle!

I'd like to encourage all (myself included) to evangelize a bit more about WFMU to our friends. I know a lot of people who purport to be music folks, yet barely pay attention to WFMU. The station needs us to spread the word, especially if you really believe in it, as I do.
