First - Niger's superstar juggernaut Tal National returns to our airwaves with a studio session and interview. We catch them in the early stages of an extended tour of North America. The band is on the road to support their most rhythmically adventurous recording yet, the scintillating Zoy Zoy (FatCat Records). We'll hear Tal National’s show-stopping super-charged adaptation of a Hausa spirit possession ritual plus lots of earth-shaking originals.

In the last half of the show, a very different adaptation of ritual music: Guitarist Yoshie Fruchter, who established himself as one of New York's leading Judeo-mashers with his instrumental band Pitom, introduces us to his new project, Schizophonia: Super-energized electric arrangements of songs learned from Ashkenazi Jewish cantorial recordings of the early 20th century. (The regional record release show for the Schizophonia album (Blue Thread Music) is at Temple University's Feinstein Center in Philadelphia on Thursday May 7th.) We'll contrast-and-compare, listening to the original recordings followed by Schizophonia's amped-up adaptations.

Tal National’s founder, leader and guitarist Almeida (Issoufou Moumine) is also a global ambassador for the non-denominational charitable NGO SOS Childrens’ Villages, which is, in its own words, a ”global federation that works to prevent family breakdown and protect and care for children who have lost parental care, or who risk losing it. Gracias a la Vida is a historic multi-generational tribute to Violeta Parra, the most important singer, songwriter and storyteller in the history of Chile. Parra’s songs of struggle, defiance, and triumph were the basis for Latin America’s “New Song” (Nueva Canción) movement, which had a tremendous influence on music and politics around the world and influenced generations.
This program features Chilean artists whose music is deeply influenced by Parra with styles ranging from nueva canción to rock and pop:
• Illapu, founded in 1971 are well known for their sophisticated interpretations of Andean folklore and rhythms, a fusion that later developed into the “nueva cancion” movement.
• Colombina Violeta Parra Tuca is a niece of Violeta Parra and a singer, songwriter, guitarist and daughter of famed anti-poet Nicanor Parra.
• Ana Tijoux first found acclaim as the female MC of the Chilean hiphop group Makiza, and has established herself on the Spanish-language indie circuit. Tijoux garnered mainstream attention in the U.S. when her single “1977” was featured on the TV series Breaking Bad.
