Ambrosia Parsley & The Elegant Too live on WFMU

Live performance by Ambrosia Parsley and The Elegant Too (Chris Maxwell, guitar & vocal; Phil Hernandez, percussion)

After her tune with Shivaree, "Good Night Moon," became a huge hit playing under the credits for "Kill Bill 2," Ambrosia Parsley retreated into the world of child-rearing and solo performance. Parsley's voice is equal parts smoke and silkiness, and she's performed for bright lights from Laurie Anderson to Chuck D to Hal Wilner. There were several failed attempts to release a solo album, and a French label finally released Ambrosia's "Weeping Cherry," in 2013. Now it's been released in the US on Barbès Records and Ambrosia Parsley and the Elegant Too performed some of the album's dark, sweet songs on Irene's show.

Hi jon, Andrew & common! I never had the chance to see Shirley live unfortunately. What a great vocal style she had-- so laid back.

I'm not familiar with Ambrosia Parsley but the name is appealing. Will be listening!

Ambrosia sounds great. Don't forget to ask her about her days singing the news on Air America!

Mary Wing:

And please ask if she is going to have any old music for sale at the Rockwood show? I'm presuming we can buy the new CD, but I'd like to get hard copies of her other stuff.

JakeGould:

Is “Ambrosia Parsley” anything like Grady’s famous wild parsley from his little community garden? www.youtube.com...
  10:02pm
JakeGould:

That is Grady from Sanford and Son. And the quotes are not needed for Ambrosia Parsley.
  10:08pm
KP:

Nice nice nice
  10:11pm
JakeGould:

Lovely stuff despite my snarkiness.
  10:15pm

Grady’s parsley was marijuana but Grady was stupid. Rollo knew it was marijuana. Okay! Her real name is lovely, all snarkiness aside.

These are all great songs; those folks got good taste!

@GaylordFields: I kid, I kid… The songs were lovely and her name is too. But I saw the opportunity to mention Grady on a message board in 2015 and had to take it. Forgive me!

@Jake, you can quote Sanford & Son any time here! My hubby Peter & I have been catching up with the reruns and they still hold up pretty well. They give me good belly laughs!

Hi Irene. Gosh, I guess it's Tuesday again already.

At least I made it in time for a little of this Floyd...

Boggle.
  10:47pm
JakeGould:

@Irene: Yup! I actually converted all 6 seasons from DVD to iPhone compatible format so I am catching up with what I watched as a kid. My favorite running joke is now Lamont constantly trying to downplay the garbage aspect; he works in “commodities.”

I had this eerie feeling, like when you leave home and you just know you are forgetting something? Like your keys or something?

Yep. That's the feeling I had tonight. Finally clicked in...

@Jake, I love the episode in which they're trying to sell some records to a collector for some large sum, and they get run over by the truck. Van, glad you got to hear some of Ambrosia. Lovely stuff!

Funny, I was listening to SVE's Are We There album earlier tonight at a BWW, at the bar, in my earbuds, and I kid you not, when "I Love You But I'm Lost" came on, I actually started to tear up. What a beautiful and sad song.

I so love SVE.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm

@JakeGould: My favorite Fred/Lamont exchange is from an early episode, when a fed-up Lamont threatens to go to an employment agency to find more fulfilling work:

Lamont: "I want to get me a job where I can use my head as well as my hands."

Fred: "They'll put a cap on your head and a broom in your hands!"

Red Foxx is missed.

Seems like many of my favorite female artists are all in Europe right now. Austra (and the AMAZING Katie Stelmanis!!!!), Torres, Sharon Van Etten (SVE), Eliza Rickman, Hilary Hahn, and probably Marissa Nadler still...

JakeGould:

@Gaylord: Mopportunities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Then there's the episode where Fred admitted that he sneaked into (his future wife) Elizabeth's room one night. Maybe he said the second room on the left. Then Aunt Ester says "My room was the second room on the left." What a scene!

This is like if you took Tangerine Dream and ran one of their tunes through a humidifier.

Or something.

I can't believe I'm the first to contribute this perfect S&S line:

Fred (to Esther): "I could stick your face in some dough and make some gorilla cookies!"
Avatar 11:30pm
Van in DC:

Yes! This is classic David Sylvian, Mick Karn, Steve Jansen...
  11:31pm
JakeGould:

@Gaylord: in that same episode, Fred says this is how he’ll find new help for the junkyard: “I’m gonna change the sign from ‘Sanford and Son’ to ‘Sanford and Anybody’.”
Avatar 11:31pm
Van in DC:

oh, and Richard Barbieri... all kind of watered down through the humidifier.

I nailed it

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm

  11:36pm

One of my favorite episodes is when they watch TV and see a show on called, “Steinberg and Son” which is just 100% the same as their life… But the father and son are Jewish.
Avatar 11:36pm
Van in DC:

Irene, if you ever want to venture out to the Japan world...David Sylvian, after he left Japan, recorded two incredible albums: Brilliant Trees, and the jaw dropping double LP Gone To Earth. Both are in my top drawer recommendations.
  11:37pm
JakeGould:

“You hear that Naomi darling? It's all my fault. I should of had a heart attack after Murray graduated High School.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: That line is laugh-evoking enough when you just read it, and then it becomes pee-pants hysterical when Redd Foxx recites it with his can't-be-unfunny comic voice and timing!
  11:40pm
JakeGould:

@Gaylord: The sad thing with Redd Foxx is that when he actually died he was having a heart attack on the set of some show and they just thought it was schtick at first.
  11:41pm
JakeGould:

And the Jewish description of Aunt Ethel? “She looks like an arab ran over her face with a tank.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
Gaylord Fields:

I recall that Rollo (the Eddie Haskell of Watts) was somehow involved in the production of Steinberg and Son by ripping off Fred & Lamont's bio and feeding the details to his cousin or such.
Avatar 11:42pm
Van in DC:

Mark Isham was pretty heavily involved with Japan and Sylvian as well. Nowadays he is just a TV sound guy. He used to be really good and talented. Not so much these days I don't think.
  11:46pm
JakeGould:

@Gaylord: Exactly, “I couldn't break into television with any of my ideas, and then I heard about these 2 people from my cousin Rollo. See the son was a nothing and the father was a nothing who yelled at the son all the time. But no matter what, those two nothings really loved each other.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm

Thanks for the recommendations, Van. And thanks Jake & Gaylord for all the memories of Redd Foxx/ Sanford & Son. Love it!
