How do, Jeff and all! Welcome to Mondays (again)!

Doug Schulkind:

Sorry to miss the debut Magic Monday but I gotta dash to work. Keep working those sleight of ear tricks, Jeff Golick!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am
Jeff Golick:

Thanks for opening up the proceedings, @listener james.
And we'll save some magic for you, @Doug.

What day is this? What time? Did I sleep through a couple of days? I'm easily confused.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm
Jeff Golick:

Right on cue, @duke!

Hi all, Welcome to the Working Week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm
Jeff Golick:

Right on, @doctorjazz.
Avatar 12:04pm

This is a nice version of Blue Monday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm
listener james from westwood:

New Order/Blue Monday covers always welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm
Jeff Golick:

Then you might like the next one, too, @ljfw...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm
listener james from westwood:

Absolutely right, both the song and its most excellent singer!
  12:08pm
Dean:

Heard a tune this a.m. on the radio station my kids listen to that sounded like New Order. It wasn't them, but one of those manicured groups you see sponsored on JetBlue TVs, Foster the People.

Thanks to WFMU, I now have three Laura Cantrell records. Bought 'em 'cuz I heard 'em here!

Monday is for lovers (of losers).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm
Jeff Golick:

Yo, @Dean! Yo, @pacific standard simon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
Jeff Golick:

Foster the People is really a terrible name for a group.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
doctorjazz:

Pretty Laura Cantrell, just have the last album, looks like I need to shop.
  12:12pm
Dean:

Yes, Jeff G., and yet not terrible at all for the group so named.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Jeff Golick:

Amen to that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm
Brian in UK:

Hello Jeff. So three hours.........
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Jeff Golick:

Aha, @Brian in UK. Welp...not today?
Avatar 12:20pm
ndbob:

afternoon Jeff and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm
Jeff Golick:

Hello and welcome, @ndbob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm
Brian in UK:

Hey ndbob.
  12:25pm
Dean:

Damnit. Twice this week I missed BS on FMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
doctorjazz:

Great sounding Van, new album?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Jeff Golick:

I was inspired by Uncle Michael playing them last week -- was that one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz -- St. Dominic's Preview, an oldie!
  12:27pm
Dean:

Yeah, that was it. Peace, Love & Understanding. Such a great band.
Avatar 12:29pm
βrian:

Hard to hear it is a big understatement. I've got a serious allergy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
Brian in UK:

Anyone remember the blonde cello player who sat at the front of the Caledonia Soul Orchestra when the man played live?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

There are some great cuts on St. Dominic's Preview (the title track and "Independence Day" in particular). I periodically return to that era of Van Morrison, always somehow surprised by how good it sounds. And then there's "Astral Weeks" of course...
Avatar 12:31pm
βrian:

Not the one with the pink eye patch and goatee …?
  12:32pm
Dean:

My favorite Van Morrison remains "Into the Music." I've never heard AW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
Brian in UK:

@elf so you had a safe journey home?
Listen to the Lion is off St Doms?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
Uncle Michael:

Pinkeye? Ringworm? Bread up front?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
Brian in UK:

@βrian I would have remembered if she had a goatee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
Jeff Golick:

I played the hell out of Astral Weeks -- might've been one of the first CDs I bought when that format first rolled out. But that's one I can still go back to without complaint.

Welcome, @UM -- were your ears buzzing? -- and also @βrian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
Brian in UK:

@Jeff The Mighty Diamonds would suit you for Jamaican harmony.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that, @Brian. Will have to search them out! Love it so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
Uncle Michael:

I got my buzzy ears on, good buddy. That's a big 10-4.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm
Jeff Golick:

There was (is?) a great local news segment called Shame On You, wherein a local newscaster brought to like some businessman's shameful activity. Had a nifty little theme, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

@BrianinUK Yes, got into Heathrow Saturday morn, now safely back in Canterbury among the bluebells, birdsong and sunshine : )
I had a nice jam with some musos in a Madison basement on my last night in Wisconsin, including a bass player called Charlie Brown who turned out to be a Kevin Ayers freak! Most unexpected:
soundcloud.com...

And "Listen to the Lion" is indeed on St. Dom's (last track on side 1)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
Brian in UK:

Perfect end to a holiday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
Jeff Golick:

Sounds like a successful trip, @the Canterbury wood-elf!
  12:42pm
Dean:

A question for the collective memory of the board: Sometime during the late '80s, early '90s, a rock group produced a CD with a haunting cover (perhaps back of the booklet). It was a sepia-toned photograph of a group of mobster-types holding aloft a carpet rolled around a victim, all but his head encased in the upholstery. They were on the verge of tossing it and him into a body of water from the pier on which they were standing. Anybody know it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Brian in UK:

You see Jeff, one hour is not long enough.

In lieu of the name, some of Stan Tracey's band are touring Under Milk Wood over here as it is fifty years young.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
doctorjazz:

I have St Dominicks Preview in the old vinyl pile, haven't heard it is so long..sounded like a jazz band, thought it may have been redone, have to pull it out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
Jeff Golick:

That's a pretty remarkable tour, @Brian. Are the crowds showing up, do you know?

@doctorjazz: that VM does seem very much in keeping with his current jazzy direction (not that I've heard much of it, mind).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
doctorjazz:

Fabulous Pullen, no note clusters so far, he didn't really need them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
doctorjazz:

There they are!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
Brian in UK:

It has nearly finished I was a bit slow out of the traps finding out about it. Only playing bijou gigs.

By the by, where does the term gigs come from. Is it derived from giggles?
  12:51pm
pacific standard simon:

Enjoying the Pullen. Sometimes you like to hear something that could be an old Tom Waits song, but without Tom singing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm
Jeff Golick:

Ha - that's so right @pss.

I thought gigs came from the show "Gigi?"
Avatar 12:55pm
ndbob:

excellent show Jeff!
  12:55pm
pacific standard simon:

Now, see, if this show were three hours, I could probably be arsed to get out of bed and log in properly, instead of using the FMU app.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm
listener james from westwood:

PSS, don't knock not getting out of bed.
Thanks for the fine program, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @ndbob & @ljfw! Glad you gents could find your way to the new locale.

And some say, @pss, that our app is one of our best qualities!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Brian in UK:

No offense but I cannot get past Aaron Neville singing this gem. Nice one, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
Jeff Golick:

That's fair, @Brian. And thanks!
  12:59pm
Dean:

Per OED on "gig" -- Etymology: Origin unknown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
doctorjazz:

Fun show, thanks!
  1:00pm
pacific standard simon:

My tablet's speakers are somewhat lacking in gloriosity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm
Jeff Golick:

Thanks for tuning in, @doctorjazz!

And I know the feeling, @pss....
