Dean:

Funny, @regana, there has been a lot of discussion lately on these comment boards of Kronos Quartet. I'm a fan, although I haven't spent much time listening to them in recent years. I loved attending their early concerts, and their recording of John Zorn's "Forbidden Fruit," in particular, really opened my ears to a world of new music. Kind of a fan, too, of their more recent disk with Asha Bosle.

Dean:

regana, The deli? Well, the new one...

Re: KQ, do explore their discography: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kronos_Quartet_discography

I'd forgotten about a bunch of these. The first record is pretty spectacular and weird for a string quartet at the time. The jazz ones (Monk and Evans) are special, too. Ostertag's "All the Rage" is amazing, given the nature of the project, which scored for s.q. a riot in San Francisco.

A cover band? Not quite. Their early concerts were traditional classical, inasmuch as they'd play Beethoven, Bartok, and we don't call that performing "covers." I see them as an effective force for expanding the repertoire of "serious" music to include pop.

But if they ever cover Phil Collins, I'll vomit.
