Thinking how Ornette Coleman was a beacon for all Outside &/or Free players - including Coltrane - it's just huge. & he didn't just play nutty stuff for its' own sake - he freed Jazz - to be expressive w/ soul - to express joy, lament, & yes often to express & release the tension of the Modern & Post-Mod worlds. &, relating to that, it's apparent he was a humble sweety. It makes me less sad that he lived rather long, accomplished masses & was well-recognized.

	7:19am Revolution Rabbit Nov63: I'm not enuff part of any such culture to know! I'm sure people who like Jazz know. One aspect of him living that long is reflecting what it means that this music was controversial in the late 1950s/early 60s. Having my 'deepest roots' in Psychedelic Rock like Hendrix (& his Jazzy drummer) - I was ready for whatever Jazz had to throw @ me as far as 'Outside' stuff & pure Expression. Far as I know - I 1st heard 'Rambling' & 'Lonely Woman' on the big black box of LPs of the Smithsonian Classic Jazz collection. But whether people know Jazz or not, they've heard Rock influenced by Free players since the 1960s. Jazz is a commercial loser these days, honestly - but even though impact is not always direct, I think it's still real...

	7:35am Revolution Rabbit Nov63: I make a point of him being an expressive player - because I think when one 1st hears 'Lonely Woman' or 'Rambling' it's immediately apparent the strength of the emotion in what he did &how he did it - & people relate to that & remember it. Only a certain sort is going to dig some of Cecil Taylor's most extreme stuff? I have a theory that many Free players had roots in R&B & Gospel - Charlie Haden here in Country! - so a folksier & less formal expression is actually part of what Free is about - despite an image of being intellectual or high-concept...all this stuff people have said about Free from the start...

	7:47am P-90: If I may, for what it's worth: No, I'm pretty sure the curious masses have not heard any of his work, simply as a matter of culture and demographics; Jazz once held a place in the popular consciousness such that there were a lot of people who wouldn't be considered "Jazz fans" who nevertheless would have had some sense of who the big names were and what they sounded like. Over the last four or five decades the cultural focus has shifted so much, and the content of the population has changed so much, that even a general familiarity with who's who and what's what in that world has become much, much more of a specialized, "niche" thing for a limited segment of enthusiasts. It's all off the radar for everyone else, by and large. Make sense?

Well for example I don't don't crap about modern dance but I know who Martha Graham or Merce Cunningham is and could probably have a conversation about them, I just wonder if Ornette is on that level with similarly curious open people of the world. I really don't know.

Jazz is museum stuff. On the other hand, Connectivity interwebz @ least has the potential of making better-informed & communicating it faster & w/ more penetration. I think some are just important enuff that the 'experts' make noise about it, & it gets picked up on in the feeds - which is what you're asking I guess...

Ornette's name would be like Martha's or Merce's to culturally conversant folks like you (who are a minority outside of a couple of the boroughs of NY and similar scattered enclaves.) --But in this era when info and whole libraries of records are available to most people at the touch of a button, the news of his passing might stimulate a lot of folks to check him out and gain that passing familiarity we're talking about that's been lost.. And-- how "jazzed" must the guys in The Dead have been to perform with the legendary, uber-"cool" Ornette? Also: I've been curious whether some show on FMU is going to bring up James "Blood" Ulmer in the context of Ornette's passing, as a prominent disciple who's been doing his own thing with Harmolodics and carrying that torch for decades?

	8:49am Tom G: I have had a copy of Ornette's "last" record for about a month now but haven't had a chance to listen yet, it's the one that just came out and the one he was in the process of suing over! It seems promising if not exactly worthy of being called his last record.
