What a card.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Doug Schulkind:

A joker, right?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Jeff Golick:

I spent much of the 1980s in a panic about nuclear winter. I blame RR. Though reading Jonathan Schell's Fate of the Earth didn't help much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Doug Schulkind:

I was proud to have the opportunity to cast my first presidential election vote ever for Not Reagan.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:57pm listener james from westwood:

@Jeff, Doug: More like the "Rules for Poker" card, with the earth in the pot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Rich in Washington:

We survived Ronald Reagan.
Avatar 5:58pm glenn:

jeeeeez, i thought this was irwin's show for a minute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Greetings LJFW, Rich in WA and glenn in CA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Rich in Washington:

I remember as a teenager hearing a radio program called Second Coming that was about how Reagan was obsessed with end times theology and that he felt it was his duty to kick off armageddon. It scared the shit out of me.
Avatar 6:00pm Peter Nelson:

Hoping for wangeness and stronderfulness.
Avatar 6:00pm glenn:

is it wrong to wish that what's his face had been a better shot?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Jeff Golick:

I'm very glad I didn't hear that, @Rich.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Doug Schulkind:

@Rich in WA
I heard that show, too. Scared the shit outta me, too.
Avatar 6:00pm ndbob:

evening Doug and everyone!
  6:02pm Dean:

8/11!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:03pm listener james from westwood:

How do, Doug, ndbob, and all!!

I do recall my freshman year high school class being very badly wigged out by "The Day After," and, when I was younger, wondering what the FALLOUT SHELTER signs on the buildings in Parkchester meant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Rich in Washington:

I am still trying to track down a copy of it. Maybe not as batshit crazy as it was to me as a teenager.
I remember Reagan giving a speech after all those Marines got blown up in Beirut and thought 'jesus. He loves doing this shit. Giving speeches over flag draped coffins."
I was terrified that they would reinstate the draft, as many conservative politicians were at the time boasting that we should do.
Avatar 6:04pm ndbob:

Contrary to popular misconception, this microphone gaffe was not broadcast over the air, but rather leaked later to the general populace
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Howdy, ndbob and Dean! A simply absurd organizing theme for this evening's show, but a least I had fun making the GIF.

@ndbob
You are correct. The mic was live, but the quip was not broadcast. It was leaked later.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:05pm listener james from westwood:

Amazing, given that that quip was in a time when that would have taken some doing, with tape and whatnot, vs. today, when getting audio out to the world is what, a 30-second procedure!
Avatar 6:05pm Sarah N:

Give the bomber some!
Avatar 6:06pm Peter Nelson:

And yet Ronny seems quite sane compared to who's been along since. Him and Maggie made a great comic partnership.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:06pm listener james from westwood:

@Sarah N: Followed by Kaminsky Falloutsky!
Avatar 6:06pm ndbob:

I think that's ridiculous Rich - sorry- I'm not exactly a Reagan fan - but do you really think he enjoyed doing "this shit" - I find your comment amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Doug Schulkind:

Hiya, Peter 'n' Sarah!
Avatar 6:08pm Peter Nelson:

Hiya, Doug 'n' Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 6:13pm Carmichael:

Howdy Doug and acolytes. When Reagan was shot, I was in a secure communications van in the Middle East. It suddenly came dinging over the teletype. Presumably, I was one of the 1st people anywhere to hear about it. And it scared the shit out of me, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Rich in Washington:

ndbob: I was a teenager. That's what I thought back then. Sorry if you find that ridiculous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Doug Schulkind:

The last dinging teletype I remember also came from 1981, Carmichael. I was outside of Cleveland at my college radio station and Cleveland Indians pitcher Len Barker had just thrown a perfect game.
Avatar 6:17pm ndbob:

I didn't find out about the Reagan shooting for an hour and a half - was in my car coming home from work - the radio was broken
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Doug Schulkind:

The things teenage me was thinking would scare the shit out of most people.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Jeff Golick:

I also recall fearing that a draft was coming. I remember mailing in some kind of registration thing upon turning 18, and really not digging the notion.
Avatar 6:18pm glenn:

against the blue jays, unfortunately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Rich in Washington:

There was someone beating the drum for the reinstatement of the draft. Also, some kind of change to the requirement to register, draft cards, etc.
Avatar 6:19pm ndbob:

I will never forget my draft lottery number - 325
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Jeff Golick:

@ndbob: was a low number good or bad?
Avatar 6:21pm still b/p:

Just a day or two ago was thinking about the pissed-off Harry Reasoner in that day's early reporting:
"Let's get it nailed down...somebody...let's find out! Let's get it straight so we can report this thing accurately!"
Well, Harry, it was a mess that day and is typically a mess still when big news breaks. Moreso now with the bigger, uglier, more varied media mob rush and idjit frenzy.
Avatar 6:22pm still b/p:

No...Frank Reynolds...not Harry. Can't I report this thing accurately?!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Jeff Golick:

I generally felt in line with Woody Allen's quip that he was classified as "4F" -- in the event of war, he was a hostage.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Jeff Golick:

(Another joke ruined!)
Avatar 6:23pm ndbob:

@Jeff a low number was good - what a relief that was!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Doug Schulkind:

My mother always told me that if I got drafted, she would shoot me in the foot. It was only years later that I learned that the shooting would have been voluntary. I am not kidding.
Avatar 6:24pm ndbob:

woops high number
Avatar 6:24pm ndbob:

was thinking low as in near the bottom
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, still b/p!
Avatar 6:26pm ndbob:

so I gave up my student deferment - was reclassified 1-A and waited out the year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Doug Schulkind:

This track from the St. Teresa Holiness Science Church comes from the Kevin Nutt collection. Thank you, Sinner!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Rich in Washington:

I remember hearing Viet Nam era relatives and coworkers citing their low numbers as a sign of how lucky/unlucky they were (depending on whether they were called up or not).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Doug Schulkind:

If I had gotten drafted, I would walked right in and blown it with my induction officer. And when I say blown it, I mean... it. That would've kept me home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Rich in Washington:

You'd have pulled a Nugent on 'em, Doug?
Avatar 6:30pm glenn:

give the klinger some.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Doug Schulkind:

@Rich in Washington
I once saw Ted Nugent live as part of an all-day hard rok fest at RFK Stadium in DC. He was a fool back then, too.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:33pm listener james from westwood:

Principal Skinner: Er, one question remains: how do I get out of the army?
Bart: No problemo. Just make a pass at your commanding officer.
Principal Skinner: Done and done. And I mean done!

Avatar 6:35pm ndbob:

TY Doug! I do remember that game - and having no idea who Len Barker was

The AP newswire went crazy with five bells! Five bells were usually reserved for natural disasters!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Rich in Washington:

I used to work with a guy who claimed that he and a friend were tearin' it up in a jeep in the mountains of Colorado when they broke down and were stranded and ended up getting rescued by a hunter who ended up being Ted Nugent. No idea if the story was true but if not, he sold it well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Doug Schulkind:

@Rich in Washington
Well, Ted Nugent just peed in that Colorado River, turning it dark yellow. (Ew gross.)

Love love love the Hot 8! The story of tragedy befalling a member of this brass band was told in the HBO show The Treme.
