Looked up Spontaneous Combustion on a site called progarchive. com. Tony Brock, drums; Gary Margretts, guitar and vocals; Tristian Margretts, bass and vocals. Their first album was produced by Greg Lake. The consensus seems to be that they were a psychedelic band that started recording just exactly when psychedelic rock went out of fashion in the early 70s. Poor bastards.
  11:15am
Dean:

At the moment, I can't even think of a band that qualifies, that is, not unless I cheat and check the playlist. Pink Floyd? Naw. Aptly, Barclay James Harvest had early releases on Harvest. For a second, I thought, "Pilot?" Nope, EMI.

Oh I see what your question was Dean. According to wikipedia (an impeccable source, I know), Harvest was created by EMI to release progressive rock and compete with labels like Decca's Deram imprint, which you probably remember had the Moody Blues. In the US they were distributed by Capitol. By the end of the 70s, they had switched to more New Wave-type acts like Wire, Thomas Dolby and Duran Duran. Sounds like they never produced the kind of revenue their corporate parents were hoping for.

There's quite a medieval flavor to these German folk tunes, "La Rotta" being, precisely, a medieval dance melody. Fans of this would *adore* recordings of Troubadour and Trouvere songs performed by Rene Clemencic's ensemble. Also their survey of songs from the Carmina Burana.

Orienta

On the search of a new way
we are knocking on heavens door
a man named Petrus opened very gently
and he asked: "Are you the guys, that should come,
and bring us the shit?"

we scratch out, all we knew, even us
and we enter, into the eternal spring
we see the heavenly host
with their eternal joints, sitting on their clouds
and their singing rised inexorable in the hands of the sun

the seven archangel bringin' us our eternal joints
and together we floating to the indeciduous love-meadow
and we join in into the canticle of the angles on Lordid Drack

"Wire were the most prog of the punk groups." Particularly by 1979's "154." Only just occurred to me that "Pink Flag" might have been a nod to the other Pink Fl---. Gilbert and Lewis's Dome and other projects continued exploration of the prog direction.

With all the German and the vibe over the last half hour or something I was reminded of Hans Eckhart Wenzel, a DDR and now German 'Liedermacher', or maybe 'bard' who a friend played for me in Leipzig not long after reunification. 'Stirbt Mit Mir Ein Stück - Liebeslieder' (Die With Me a Little - Lovesongs', 1986, is the album I know, and his first. The song my friend loves was 'Verlassenes Bett', 'Deserted Bed' which you can find on YouTube. Maybe you know him, but if not maybe you'll like it. Listening now it's not as quite as 'archaic' sounding as I'd remembered, but close.

I guess the folk I like better is when a swain brings his lady love a caterpillar, and it's really a metaphor for something in his pants.
