Hey Jeff, this track is another cool surprise. Where do you find 'em?

Great show so far! thanks

Good morning, fellas.

Are you talking about 60 Million Buffalo, Simon? That one a friend turned me on to recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21am

Yes. That was nice. I wish I had friends like that. Oh, wait, I do! At WFMU.

I'm also a record collector, Simon. I come across a lot of stuff that way...

I used to be a cheap-ass record collector -- mostly thrift shops -- but I took the lazy man's way out and pledged allegiance to digital. Last time I moved, 2/3 of my records went to KUSF-in-exile. I don't even have a turntable these days, but I wish I did.
Avatar 3:36am
Jeff Conklin:

I don't ever buy anything expensive. If I do, I trade. I like finding cheap, good records...

Amen.

This J.D. Brennan + Gold Fever thing is pretty amazing, too -- it's as if Elvis took an entirely different path in life.

Maybe an alternate universe where Elvis never had the nerve to sing in public, but made private recordings for himself.

i'm reminiscing to when i got kicked out of the community gardens for having datura in my plot.

Jeff Conklin:

Now that I think about it, "grooving" was a big term among Kesey and the Pranksters, wasn't it? Used like "going with it". So, in that case, I'm always grooving...
Avatar 4:14am
AdamFromOldeKenzo:

that's how I interpret it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15am
coelacanth:

"groovin'" & "groovy" are underappreciated terms these days....they really do express.

WTF, is there still a Bananafish? I have copies of that zine from twenty-something years ago.
Avatar 4:31am
AdamFromOldeKenzo:

no it ended in the early aughts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32am
coelacanth:

bananafish?
Avatar 4:34am
AdamFromOldeKenzo:

it was a classic weirdo music zine from back in the day, which was very important to me when I was young so I namedrop it like it is a common thing everyone knows about, ha ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35am
pacific standard simon:

The WWW was the death-knell of the paper zine. Sad but true. I'm sure you can still find some, but it was obvious even 20 years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36am
coelacanth:

hmmm. my scope was apparently woefully inadequate.
Avatar 4:37am

yeah, I guess Byron Coley's got one now called Bull Tongue Review which is supposed to be good, I haven't checked it yet though.
Avatar 4:38am

coelacanth, everyone can't know about everything though! There's lots of zines I wish I'd got the chance to check out!

I only know OF those zines. Never read them. I came of age with the blog.

Thank you. i'll get back to my Bop now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44am

Science fiction zines preceded music zines; if you want to look at what's happened to them (plus some digital re-publications of old stuff) there's this link:

Avatar 4:45am
AdamFromOldeKenzo:

hell yeah, thanks simon! I love stuff like that!
Avatar 4:45am
Jeff Conklin:

I was thinking about it today: I really never read any kind of music criticism at all anymore. Besides the abundance of poor writing, it's so easy to hear everything know and form my own opinion fairly quickly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46am
pacific standard simon:

On the other hand, the full run of SLASH is online as a pdf. It wasn't a zine, it was a real magazine, but it had that feel. I don't have a link handy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48am
coelacanth:

i thought about starting one...i mean, any asshole can say shit about music!
Avatar 4:48am
AdamFromOldeKenzo:

Yeah Jeff, me too! Though actually your email dispatches I do consider to be great music writing, and would probably be over 50% of the music writing I read a month, volume-wise
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49am
pacific standard simon:

I think you've got it right, Jeff. Interpretation, except by the truly inspired, is far less useful these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49am
coelacanth:

really,though- that bananafish looks like it would've given me some validation much MUCH sooner.
...i wish i'd known.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52am

Avatar 4:53am

Funny, I don't get Scott's emails. I should rectify that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54am
pacific standard simon:

@coelacanth - perhaps your wallet is enlightened...
Avatar 4:54am
AdamFromOldeKenzo:

he hasn't written any in a while, I think that's why I got mixed up. And didn't connect that you play way less jazz than he does, ha ha.
Avatar 4:56am
Jeff Conklin:

Now to spite you I'll have to do an all jazz show soon...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56am
pacific standard simon:

Hmm, less jazz, yeah. Seems like Jeff could occupy some middle ground, like Sandy Bull. Great late night music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56am
coelacanth:

this is good contemplative music.
excuse me while i find out if it's good teeth-brushing music.
Avatar 4:58am

I play what I feel like playing and that's the long and short of it. I'm by no means averse to jazz but there's little new stuff I find interesting.

D.O. radio got me covered, when i want jazz.
- i'm very particular about my jazz. most of it's terrible these days, but the occasional bits of it on fmu are welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09am

@AdamFromOldeKenzo - The idea is to introduce the people you know to what you know, so they can choose more than what they would have chosen previously.

mutant sounds? great, great, blog while it lasted... but you can still get most of that stuff on soulseek.

I suppose you can still read about the records on MS and then go to SLSK but its not quite the same.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13am

I have to say that D:O radio does not have me covered, good as it is. There is so much more to jazz that is beautiful.

Jeff Conklin:

D:O is great. WKCR is great. WBGO is great
Avatar 5:16am

I am 35 so I got into the zine era kind of late, but found Bananafish, Forced Exposure, and Ptolemaic Terrascope back issues in bins for cheap!

I was "friends" with mutant sounds on SLSK before he started his blog... you are right though that it felt more personal on the blog... but slsk is way better than ex sites like rapidshare, mediafire ect. ect.
Avatar 5:17am

I bought PT actually..
Avatar 5:17am
AdamFromOldeKenzo:

and I'd end up hearing Mutant Sounds blog stuff from other friends because I didn't have a computer then. It does still seem like another, more magical time though, ha ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20am
coelacanth:

yes,in the grand scheme of things,i know i agree with you simon. right now i'm very focused on other things and destination:out satiates my occasional want for jazz...i listen to the cds and records in my own collection more than i do D.O.
...i'm very Thankful for it though.
Avatar 5:20am
AdamFromOldeKenzo:

I guess I actually found a stack of PT back issues without the 7"s in a free box at this record store in Minneapolis. Good haul!

Used finds are always good. I'm still digging through Jeff's radio station pointers.

"D:O is great"
Jeff while I liked the show when it was pure jazz, I FOUND THEIR MIXING of genres now to be confusing and boring - last week they had a desert rock special! I mean there is enough great Jazz - free, modern, Avant, Hard Bop etc to make everyone happy.
Don't see a reason to mix rock in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25am

(the D.O. premium cd from last year is in high esteem over here too,for what it's worth!)
