1971?
starting with Floyd's "Echoes"
Avatar 10:35am
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Wood-elf: the 1971 conspiracy of excellence: all my favorite LPs were either recorded or released during that year. Something in the water. Or stars. Stars in the water, perhaps. But it was the best year for music (in my humble opinion).

Ich bin.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

I have a '66-'74 theory that's almost identical. Four years either side of my birth. All the best stuff. Depending on genre it seems to converge around different years within that (reggae, spiritual jazz, psychfolk and prog all seemed to have peaked '72-'73). It had occured to me that there might be some astrological explanation. Why can't people make records sound that good anymore, after another 40 years of experience and technological possibility??
There must be SOMETHING going on.

Maybe the fact the Beatles broke up?

amon düül's Dance of the Lemmings, the Faust s/t, Hawkwind's 'x in search of space,' the first grobschnitt lp (recorded '71 i believe), cluster '71, the first Gila record, ... it goes on & on..

Well, i prefer Yeti from Lemmings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

@Rev It was worldwide. African music, Latin American music...
Avatar 10:44am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...you could argue The Beatles' last, 'Abbey Road', was their only 'modern' one on modern boards, & w/ the fully mature Pop chops; that they had only just grown up. Likewise the whole scene, in a way, w/ Prog coming out of Psych saying you can play well & have ideas in Pop & be recorded well...& the Amps were finally big enuff by the late 60s/early 70s - as far as Metal developing...The idea that it's not always about the 60s, but momentum was getting underway into the 70s - but before it got too big & corporate ??...
Avatar 10:45am
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Guido: Yeti is a superior record, but Lemmings was my first; the gateway drug, so it has mega-magic.
Avatar 10:46am
Rev. Turnip Druid:

...and for that I credit Archie Patterson's Eurock lecture series (cassettes) from a billion years ago.
Avatar 10:47am

I think the boomers were at their peak buying power, and music was like a religion. Also, the counterculture was into seeing bands, so you could make a living touring without going multiple platinum.
