I was once in a restaurant in the West Village, seated facing a window, when two men walked past me, one shorter and older than the other, and familiar-looking. I excitedly said to my dining companion, "I think that was Mel Tormé who just walked by!" A patron in the restaurant who happened to overhear me says to me, "Oh, honey, she doesn't cruise the West Side!"

Torme's a guilty pleasure of mine. I actually think he's great. I saw him play the drums and he was a pretty decent drummer, too. I think he and Buddy Rich were pretty good friends.
