I call it "star search" singing - which was the show that was the "modern" precursor to all the current talent shows on TV. EVERY singer had to do the crazy oversinging.

JakeGould:

@common: That’s why it’s worth so much money.

Have you ever heard "Doing It Wrong" by Anita Blay? It was the theme song to a BBC TV show called Some Girls (great show, GREAT song). I think you would dig it.
  4:04pm
Mark R.:

I agree with you about melisma--but I'm OK with Aretha doing it. I just think she's the only one allowed to do it. I still think"Dr. Feelgood" and "I Never Loved A Man" are some of the most amazing pop/soul songs ever recorded. Actually, between 1967-72 she could do no wrong imo. But "Sweet Bitter Love" is cool, too, and like so many records you play, I hadn't heard it before! You've turned me on to a lot of cool tuneage.

Simon Reynolds would hate this Miriam song. His loss.

Tim Gane's new band is actually pretty good. Sort of Stereolabby, but that's a good thing.

@djsheilab: I actually agree with his premise in Retromania quite strongly — I'm just not on board with his conclusion that popular music must go forward to be enjoyable. (Full disclosure: I used to work alongside Simon at a music magazine, and think he's a really good thinker and writer both.)

Contrary to popular belief, the Parsons Project was not a bunch of studio musicians. In addition to Eric Woolfson and Parsons, the nucleus of the band was Ian Bairnson, David Paton and Stuart Tosh (all from the band Pilot, which Parsons produced). All but Tosh (replaced by Stuart Elliott from Cockney Rebel) remained through the last album Gaudi, and even into the all-but-in-name album fiasco Freudiana.
