Listener Robert:

There really was nothingwrong with Quaaludes. They got taken off the market when their maker was found to be taking into acc't their diversion onto the black market in projecting their sales. Rorer then retroactively withdrew their application to market this drug, which then reverted to "new drug" status (i.e. unapproved). That meant that generic versions of methaqualone resting on same such as Sopor were taken off the market too in the USA. Nobody ever determined the drug to be defective in any way, they were just withdrawn because of their popularity.

Also, keep in mind that the dose used to "abuse" a sleeping pill like that is LOWER than the prescribed dose to put one to sleep. So it's not as if the diversion of the drug to other purposes was endangering people's health.
