Avatar 11:51am Michael:

You are welcome. I couldn't figure out how to credit shows through the renewal process so I asked Joe to email you and apparently he did. =)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Charlie:

Hello Mayuko, my virtual co-host! Thank you for joining me.
Also hello to James, ßrian, Uncle Michael, Annie, Flash Strap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Parq:

Thanks, James. I couldn't quite place it. At first, I thought it was the theme Williams did for Star Trek.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Gary:

Hi Gang
Avatar 12:06pm Mayuko:

We've already got a bunch of people to thank, Charlie!

I'd like to thank all these generous pledgers:

Holly from Brooklyn, NY!

James from Westwood, NJ!

Moshe from Cambridge, MA!

Jason from Brooklyn, NY!

Rachel from Sacramento, CA!

Our own Uncle Michael, of Hinky Dinky Time on the drummer stream!

Ron from Raleigh, NC!

Haskel from Oakland, CA!

and Jan, from New York, NY!

Thank you thank you for all your support for WFMU, Drummer Stream, and Busy Doing Nothing!!!!!
Avatar 12:07pm annie:

oh, crap, it said busy doing nothing and the pledge went to diane kamikaze!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm listener james from westwood:

@Parq: Are you thinking of Jerry Goldsmith's theme for "ST: The Motion Picture?" It's got that grand sweep to it, certainly!
Avatar 12:09pm annie:

oh well....c'est la radio!
Avatar 12:09pm Flash Strap:

all John Williams soundtracks sound the same, give or take a few. I like to think of him as the man with one good idea
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm listener james from westwood:

Argh, that question mark belongs outside that quote. Four hours of sleep and a roasting-hot office are not my friends today!
Avatar 12:09pm Mayuko:

Charlie just said it on mic too about the +plus button thingy, here's the graphic instruction: blogfiles.wfmu.org... Don't forget to hit the +plus botton, and make sure his name shows up UNDER the pulldown menu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Parq:

James, probably. I was specifically thinking of the theme from ST-TNG, which I thought was the same as the first movie, and which I in turn thought was John Williams. Oh well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Charlie:

Hello also Gary! and Parq!

And thanks to everyone who's pledged so far!
Avatar 12:11pm Mayuko:

I am sorry annie, but we very much appreciate your support for the station & radio love for Busy Doing Nothing!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm listener james from westwood:

Parq: It's all one big space jam! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Uncle Michael:

The ? belongs outside the quote, James? I guess I don't know the rules!
Avatar 12:12pm People Like Us:

it's all good... it's the first time it's happened; all others went to my intended donee.. no biggie..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm listener james from westwood:

@Flash: Danny Elfman's soundtracks likewise have what you might call a heavy dose of reversion to the mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm doctorjazz:

Hi all, quick check in, back to the mines...
Go Charlie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Charlie:

hello PLU, DrJazz!
Avatar 12:14pm Flash Strap:

true, James. Elfman sort of has Philip Glass-syndrome, but with a far worse outcome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Uncle Michael:

GTDR where the Draising is FUN!
Avatar 12:15pm Flash Strap:

wow I want to hear her do that Rota
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Parq:

I cannot begin to tell you how divisive that question-mark-inside-or-outside-the-close-quote issue is in my shop.
Avatar 12:19pm Mayuko:

woohoo, Busy Doing Nothing is driving fast!!
We'd like to thank:

Lewis from Minneaplis, MN!

K.J. from New york, NY!

Our own Jeff from Jersey City, NJ!

Bas, checking in from Utrecht! first oversea pledger, yay!

Thank you all very very much for supporting Busy Doing Nothing!!!!
Avatar 12:19pm βrian:

With the proper semantic markup, that question mark can display either way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Charlie:

Wow, thanks everyone for the pledges!
Avatar 12:21pm βrian:

Hey, Louis-from-MPLS: lake Wingra opened up two days ago!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm listener james from westwood:

For a title, I'd go with the mark outside the closing quote if it weren't actually part of the title (e.g, "Hatari!" or "Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?").
Avatar 12:24pm Lewis:

@Brian = spring is springing! gonna be in Mad town next weekend maybe Mendota will be open by then?....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Uncle Michael:

What if the mark is part of a quote and not a tile?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Charlie:

Hello there Lewis :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Uncle Michael (+):

Don't forget your (+)s, friends!
Avatar 12:25pm Flash Strap:

Congratulations, Moshe!!!! and thank you so so much for your generous support!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm listener james from westwood:

@UM: If they belong with the quoted matter, such as the following, I'd keep it inside:

The expression "J'accuse!" has survived for decades after Zola penned it in his article about the Dreyfus Trial.
Avatar 12:29pm ndbob:

afternoon Charlie and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Uncle Michael:

@James: And then I heard my brother holler, "you bastard!"

Is that correct?
Avatar 12:30pm βrian:

<l>Forsooth, who wrote <title>Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?</title>?</l>

Mendota looks damn close, but I guess it depends on a particular rowboat path.
Avatar 12:32pm Flash Strap:

just popped back in and got excited that we were talking about the Dreyfus Affair, before I realized it was just an example for the ongoing discussion of quotation marks and punctuation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm listener james from westwood:

@UM: Yes indeed!
Avatar 12:32pm βrian:

Zola wrorte "J'accuse!"?? I was sure it was my cat, Gus.
Avatar 12:33pm Lewis:

@Brain - gotcha, probably independent of the beer...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm listener james from westwood:

I would not put it past Gus. Cats are canny beasts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Uncle Michael:

@James: But it would be:

Avatar 12:37pm βrian:

I'm teasing my pledge along ... Not quite ready... Tantric giving, don't you know?
Avatar 12:37pm annie:

i'm trying to duplicate one of my favorite(?) mistakes; the one in which a comma or period is placed inside a "quote," instead of outside the quotations marks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm listener james from westwood:

@UM: If the exclamation point were part of the film's title, it would go inside the quotes. If the mark is making the whole sentence into an exclamation, as implied by the emphasis on "really," it's OK outside. (If both meanings, you'd only need to place it once, inside.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks James.
Avatar 12:41pm Mayuko:

James from Westwood NJ, thanks for checking in again!!! our big supporter on Give the Drummer Radio!!!

I developed my moral sense in part from watching I Love Lucy.

If you lie, Ricky will eventually find out and then it'll be even worse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm doctorjazz:

Nilsson?????? Wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Charlie:

Yes, he coulda been nicer to Donovan. Lots of people, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Charlie:

Lucy!!!!
Avatar 12:51pm Flash Strap:

so true. he's such a snarling little Rimbaud that whole film, it's a really uncomfortable glory... but man, what a fundamental misreading of Donovan as a person, to perceive him as a threat in any way.
Avatar 12:51pm βrian:

Where has the marathon map gone?

Avatar 12:57pm Mayuko:

oh! so that all blank page on marathon map URL right now will stay the same. thanks for the info UM & Vicki!
Avatar 12:57pm βrian:

Oh, sadness. I thought was a great tool for strong-arming friends across the pond.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Jeff Golick:

@Flash Strap: I imagine Bob didn't see Donovan as a threat so much as he (Bob) just enjoyed tearing people down from time to time. As sport.

Hi, @Charlie, listeners, and all other Jeffs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Jeff Golick:

I believe the issue with the marathon map goes back to some tweaks google made under the hood of Google Maps, which fugged things up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Hello Charlie & Nothing-Doers. No map? I guess we're one happy FMU World!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Charlie:

belated "hi" to ndBob! Hi Jeff G and Kevin!
Avatar 1:03pm Flash Strap:

@Jeff: while that's definitely true, I think I really do detect a sort of wild obsessive insecurity in the way he encounters all that Donovan media throughout the film, something childish and territorial. I don't think his swipe at Donovan was as purely predatory as some others. Still petty though.

Absolutely love Dylan in that flick though. His maddening exchange with the guy from LIFE is a masterpiece of something
  1:03pm rf:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Jeff Golick:

Consider the care that goes into Charlie's playlists every week. Hand-selected images...a personal missive via email...the musical tapestry...the spoken poetry. It's hard to put a price on it...but $75 sounds about right.
Avatar 1:34pm Michael:

Like this!
Avatar 1:34pm Flash Strap:

@UM: I will say, the world is largely made up of things that empathize with Mr. Jones, and that I have no problem with his ass getting raked over the coals without mercy from time to time; it's a healthy social tonic, and the heart of the revolutionary spirit. What gives me chuckles about that scene is how ineffectively Bob handles the rake, how much he himself gets burned despite his best efforts. But he WAS so damn young
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm listener james from westwood:

Hell yes, Jeff, by all means the weekly email! Charlie's is one of my very favorite regular missives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Jeff Golick:

Let's all be glad camera crews were not following us around at age twenty-something, and then the footage used for documentaries.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Uncle Michael:

I've always been struck by the fact that Mr. Jones was just a poor slob being sent to do a job, and who was trying to do his best. He wasn't a Life magazine logo, he was a person...and one that wasn't there to do Dylan any harm. He was in an untenable position if his subject was intent on taking the piss out of him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Charlie:

Thanks for your kind comments, those of you who have made kind comments :) (if you've thought kind thoughts, thank you too.) And thank you for your pledges. We need more pledges!
