today was the last day of a very long work "week". i looked forward since 2-3 days ago to going to the pub tonight, but i'm knackered. i'm still debating it though!

coela! same - Mondays are typically my "fridays". Had a busy, exhausting few days. Stayed out a little bit too late last night too. Butter Chicken Roti brought me to a good place.
Avatar 12:28am

Roti = from tonight. I did not stay out too late because of Roti. Though that would also be okay..

It's somewhat of a staple in the city amongst certain people I guess

If you're familiar with Indian roti as a product, be prepared to be confused when in DC and it's the name of a Mediterranean restaurant chain...

for years there were 3 indian restaurants in my town. now there's one. the food's good, but the atmosphere is like a diner.

Though there's a place nearby with excellent naan.

no great mexican places here either. one opened last year. i thought it was good; but apparently most folks complained about this and that and now it's very much "americanized"...tons of cheese and not enough spice.

Banana bread also good.

Just returned from visiting my daughter who's working at an archaeological dig in Oaxaca. She said the cook makes an amazing fried plantain and lentil soup. I hope she can get the recipe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52am

Lyle:

I'll never forget the night I was playing with Sherwin Mann (Herbie's brother) in Jamaica. We had no formal gig set-up, rather, we had just wandered off the cruise ship we were working on and we ended up at some jerk chicken restaurant in Negril. Next thing you know, somebody hands me their trombone and Sherwin gets behind this makeshift set of drums and we're suddenly entertaining a crowd of possibly 60-70 Jamaicans. This is the funny part. In all honesty, Sherwin and I were quite inebriated at this point; so much so that Sherwin totally loses the beat. Bear in mind we were very young, so this was probably around 1952 or thereabouts. Now, this beat that Sherwin is playing ... this backwards beat ... suddenly the locals start cheering and dancing and yelling at us "Reggie! Reggie!" and I am convinced it is because Sherwin is a dead ringer for Reginald Radcliffe of the Archie comic books-fame. Whatever the case, they loved the backwards beat and the "Reggie" music we were making. Imagine our shock years later when Desmond Decker and Bob Marley gained noteriety in the states with a new thing called ... Reggae music. Had we invented it by accident way back then? I don't know. We sure had fun, though! We always had fun back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54am

rw, i hope she can too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54am
tomasz.:

Lyle! great to see you. you've lived such a wild life, man.
  12:56am
Lyle:

Hey, Tommy! I don't understand the "Z" in your name, but I'm old. Just let me call you Tommy. Yes, I've been around, had some fun. Life is great, young man. Enjoy it! Tommy Dorsey did, I can tell you!
Avatar 1:00am
Alejandro in TO:

Thx for stories Lyle!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02am
coelacanth:

if that story is true (and i dont assume it is!) it fairly makes sense; because the root phrases "reggae" came from are similar to the roots of the term "jazz", which originally had nothing to do with music; but meant something along the lines of "a mess" or "messy thing".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03am
coelacanth:

anyway, yes - Thanks for the stories. i forgot about them, it's been so long.

  1:16am
rw:

I hate to say it, but I think Lyle may be a little confused. I'm pretty sure the Archie Comics were a product of the '60s and '70s. Sherwin must have resembled a different Reggie in the early '50s.
Avatar 1:18am
Alejandro in TO:

I think Archie Comics were also around in the 50s but maybe a bit different?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19am
coelacanth:

...maybe they thought he was Reggie Workman.

Something was played at the wrong speed on WFMU? Man…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21am
coelacanth:

-or no, i think he was too young yet.
  1:23am
JakeGould:

Archie comics in the 1950s were fairly generic looking. But the 1960s and 1970s stuff is really the classic stuff. And the goofy/sexy stuff was at it’s pinnacle back then. I mean look at this… upload.wikimedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26am
coelacanth:

oh Jake that's so dirty!
  1:26am
rw:

Oh, man. Archie Comics go back to the late '30s. I had no idea. Sorry to have doubted you Lyle!
Avatar 1:26am
Alejandro in TO:

Doesn't bother me, JJ. Though preference is for at least 320 MP3's. It bugs me when the hi-hat/cymbal frequencies get all wonked up at lower bitrates...
  1:27am
JakeGould:

@coelacanth: Well, honestly I was having a “bro” conversation with a friend who was talking about how his son loves Archie comics and we both agreed: The ladies in those comics are pretty sexy for a kids comic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31am
coelacanth:

honestly jj, the fidelity was fairly poor on all of those songs except "random friends". i still enjoyed them, but i wont lie and say it's not noticeable! (now you'll tell me that that too was a low-end mp3!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32am
jj.:

ha, yes, that, too, was an mp3 with a bitrate that i wish was higher.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34am
coelacanth:

ha! i don't know why it sounded much better to me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37am
coelacanth:

anyway, lots of fmu djs play mp3s and even youtube videos over the air. i think fluctuating sound quality is the compromise accepted (and acceptable) for an infinite musical education.
Avatar 1:41am
Alejandro in TO:

this Nick Carter, is a re-issue release?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42am

sort of a reissue. seems like it was a private press LP circa '78-'79 but never had proper release.
Avatar 1:44am
Alejandro in TO:

yea I looked it up recently, seems like the case, heard it a lot lately, all very good. Hoping maybe the record shop has a copy or maybe they can get it in. Have to remember the Flashback name.

Yeh coel, we did share not long ago. I go from Bluetooth headphones to fm to computer, and I agree that fm is one of the cleanest least fatiguing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04am

(actually, to you it sounds like a conundrum; to me it sounds like a little portable transistor radio playing at the far end of a vacuum cleaner hose.)
