When I found out that music has structure to it, just like a bridge has, right away I began to get interested. . . . I found out there's plenty of difference between one symphony and another symphony. Beethoven, Mozart, and Brahms were the boys I liked. All three of them, they took themes that were simple, like an architectural figure, but they could get cathedrals out of them, believe me they could. -- James M. Cain, "Career in C Major" (1946)

This Waits album is from that period in the late 80s when Marc Ribot was just freaking everywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Charlie:

ribot makes that album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Charlie:

sticker on back of this tom ze cd -- bought used at sounds on st marks place many moons ago :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Parq:

Charlie, they're gone, you know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Charlie:

yes, so i've heard, along with many of my old haunts . . .
Avatar 1:14pm Michael:

And sadly the St. Marks Bar and Grill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm doctorjazz:

Ribot was/is fabulous, gives everything that angular, jagged, intense feel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Goyim in the AM:

Ribot, yes; but also, I would hasten to add, Larry Taylor.
Avatar 1:17pm Carmichael:

Hey, Tower of Power! I knew you could do it, Charlie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Parq:

Goyim, after I saw Ribot perform a few years back, I was comparing him to his Lounge Lizards predecessor, Artoo Lindsey. Artoo's playing was wild, almost like percussion. Ribot's playing, despite its similar sound was precise and deliberate, each sound falling exactly where he intended it to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Parq:

Dennis Coffey, another cool guitarist, from a different era. Saw him at the Ponderosa Stomp's all-Detroit show at Lincoln Center in summer 2010.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Goyim in the AM:

Arto Lindsay (for thus is his name spelled) would be the first to tell you that he can't play guitar except as a percussion instrument. Got nothing but love for both guitarists. Larry Taylor's bass playing is hugely rhythmic, hugely melodic, and a big part, maybe most, of the Tom Waits tracks I still like.
Avatar 1:43pm Erella:

Hey annie!
Avatar 1:44pm Erella:

Loving the music you're playing Charlie !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Charlie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm doctorjazz:

Bobby D, when he (and I) was young...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Mike East:

funny...that Leonard Cohen song put Dylans "She Belongs To Me" in my head...similar melody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Charlie:
