I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

皆さん、こんばんは! Good evening,
everyone!
I'm with you for the first hour only,

Good afternoon Mayuko. I'm so psyched for this show

Good Monday, Mayuko and all! I will indeed accept the charges on this call from Tokyo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
fred:

I had never even heard of Ryuichi Sakamoto before getting a signed copy of Beauty. There was a signing at the local Virgin store, and that looked more appealing than an accounting class. So I went and soon became a fan
Avatar 5:10pm
Mayuko:

Thank you for tuning in, everyone! I'm psyched to do this Beauty-themed show today too! The Ryuichi Sakamoto's album in which I heard Youssou N'dour and Misako Koja and all other great music for the first time ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm
fred:

This album was my introduction to music from Okinawa. For years it was all (with Neo Geo), but the seeds were planted

heya Play Vertigo pals! Everyone have a good WFMU record fair weekend?

Hi Mayuko
Avatar 5:25pm
Mayuko:

@fred yah for me too. Using Okinawa music then seemed to be a bit controversial though, which is understandable that it's a sensitive issue. It's a bit similar to maybe like a white person using native american music element in his music. I personally think this album was done with respect and credit and don't think it's any cultural exploitation, but.

Wish I could have done some shopping at the fair!

It was good! I managed to see and acquire a few nice things without spending too much :)

(My brain been haunted by this Alexis Zoumbas' violin for some weeks now)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm
fred:

It opened my mind to it, and much later led me to dive into that music. I'm not special, so if it worked for me, it must have worked for many. And it wasn't gimmicky like some "world music" of the time could be
Avatar 5:33pm
Mayuko:

@rbxbx great, glad you had a good time at the fair! Did you see the collage art exhibit? So bummer I couldn't make it to see them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
fred:

Sanjo is a bit too showy for me, but have you heard Sinawi? It's like traditional Korean free jazz. Mind-blowing stuff
Avatar 5:37pm
rbxbx:

Mayuko: I didn't! Somehow missed ._.

I was with a friend that was kind of in a hurry so I didn't get to explore as fully as I might have liked to.

Ken From Hyde Park:

Hallooo from the grocery store!
Avatar 5:39pm
Mayuko:

@fred yah! I totally agree. Apparently Sakamoto san studied so called world music in college with Fumio Koizumi, the most important ethnomusicologist professor in Japan, so he must have been very much aware that it really shouldn't be gimmicky when you deal with world music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm

Asadoya Yunta!!!
Avatar 5:45pm
Mayuko:

Probably it wasn't too big, it was artwork by the brother of Greg Harrison (who did the monkey becoming a DJ graphic during the marathon) Looked good in the pics.

Hello Ken! Happy grocery shopping!

This month is Cleveland's two day Asian Festival. Music, dancers, various martial arts, good food..
I am excited to see 古箏 guzheng player, similar to kayageum which you just played.

I don't know which city..

That was a great live moment when I saw Sakamoto in the very early 90's. Wyatt wasn't on stage, but that was the first time I saw a Kora

Early 90's Sakamoto shows must have been fun I suppose - lots of dancy stuff, like heartbeat and neo geo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm

Back in those long gone college years, I had my mother knit a sweater with YMO's logo in front and the band members' names in the back (in kanji). One of a kind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm
fred:

Romance!!!
Avatar 6:30pm
Mayuko:

That sweater truly is one of a kind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm
coelacanth:

fred do you still have that?
Avatar 6:32pm
Mayuko:

This is a cover of Stephen Foster’s song "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair" from 1854 - arranged into Okinawa folk music style - I think Sakamoto san got an amazing idea here, so so beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
fred:

I love this song so much!
Sakamoto introduced me to a lot of wildly different music. Not as much as dance, but close. Dance first pointed me to Steve Reich, but Sakamoto san was the first I saw use phasing live
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm
fred:

@coelacanth: Of course!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm
coelacanth:

i got the Beauty cassette back in the day, based on just his name -having not heard him solo. i tuned right in to that because it was familiar but it took a while for the rest of the album to grasp me.
it did though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm
fred:

I love this song even more!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm
coelacanth:

fred, it'd be a shame if you didn't. i still have stuff like that, even if i cannot wear it anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm

(although my vintage Clash tshirt was stolen, along with a hand-painted (by me) X-ray Spex t.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm

Famfa is nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
coelacanth:

(...not that i'm putting t shirts up with a hand-knitted sweater!...okay i'll shut up now.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm
fred:

@coelacanth: I don't wear it these days though: it's just too hot for a wool sweater. I wear T-shirts year-round now, I haven't seen snow in years
Avatar 6:44pm

A hand-painted T stolen!!! That's serious!!!

I love that Famfa so much, melinda. Glad you liked it too!

To me that's Elephant Man music. I'm a Lynch fan

for what it's worth, and to me it's worth a lot, i ran into the thief 7 years later and she apologised.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm

@coelacanth, if I had Wolverine-like sensory powers, I'd offer to track that shirt down. That's a huge bummer.
I hear this track and I imagine the hundreds of trampoline-injured kids on the Simpsons' lawn.

This is my good bye track for today - stay tuned for Global Grease with Kim Sorise starting at 7pm! wfmu.org...

hundreds of trampoline-injured kids on lawn?! that sounds tragic.
