Morning, Duke. Thanks for joining us this morning!
  6:12am
Mark R.:

Hiya Sem. The old favorite being "Soul Sauce," I assume--not this Moroccan stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27am
Sem Chumbo:

Mark: spent a lot of time in Morocco and read a lot of Paul Bowles and things about him. Both interests merged in an interest in the indigenous music of the country.

Soul Sauce was lovely, also:-)
  6:29am
Mark R.:

Bowles was a fascinating man, and we're lucky he loved Moroccan music so much that he recorded this for us.

I was with friend in Tangiers and he decided to knock on Bowles door with an offering of flowers
Bowles was very nice and generous in entertaining these random strangers, offered us some kif and we discussed the Iraq war (it was 1990)
true story

Mark R.:

Very cool. It's always gratifying when people we admire turn out to be nice people, isn't it?

Sem Chumbo:

@tiago: in 1989, I was in Morocco for six weeks. Arriving at Tangier by ferry, a tout took me to a hotel, the Tanger Inn, on Rue Magellan, overlooking the port.
An elderly Englishman, the lontime owner, apparently, met me a reception, a huge black and white tube TV (with a doily on top) tuned to a soccer game. He offered the information that Burroughs had written much of Naked Lunch in the room he was going to show me, and that he (Burroughs) was only in Tangier because if his friendship w/ Bowles
When I asked the concierge what he thought of Burroughs, he said he was a quiet man.
Morphine addicts are like that, I said. He handed me the key and went back to his soccer game.

Hey, CJ!

I wish more WFMU DJs would play music by people performing in the city as you do. It is a way to introduce us to new music and maybe inspire us to go and see it.
  8:53am
Mark R.:

Thanks, Chris. There's always something cool to do in this neck of the woods, and a lot of it's quite affordable. For a more comprehensive listing, go under the "Diversions" tab and check out our Local Event Guide, "The Arbitrary Guide to Popular Culture."
