Avatar 12:19pm Cecile:

I saw him with the Knoxville Girls. That was a fine, if short-lived band.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Not released in 1964? Same thing we blame stuff on today: the Republicans!
Avatar 12:20pm Todd-o-phonic:

Olympics cut steals the show on that comp!
Avatar 12:21pm Joe B:

Knoxville Girls played the record fair one time, on a double bill with demolition doll rods!

Dear God, how many versions of this song *are* there? This may very well be more covered than any Porter or Gershwin song.

Other Music is closing: www.nytimes.com...
Avatar 1:05pm Marc Francis:

@Eugene: Damn. Another one bites the dust.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Eugene:

Glad they're keeping the label going at least.

@Eugene Saw that a little while ago: so. not. ok. @Marc, yes: *another* one...

R.I.P. Other Music. Now what do people go to the East Village for? To “do brunch” and that’s it? www.nytimes.com...
  1:20pm JakeGould:

@Eugene: Props to you. Just saw your link; didn’t know you posted it. Why doesn’t someone create a mobile music/CD/record store van?
Avatar 1:22pm Todd-o-phonic:

One more song in either of the first 2 sets and Lenny Kaye would have run out of fingers.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Parq:

Damn, outright closing, not even moving to Brooklyn. If they ever tear down the Flatiron Building, I'm not even going to know what city I'm in any more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Michael 98145:

... Never get tired of listening to Bob Mould
  1:24pm JakeGould:

@Parq: If you want to get upset at humanity in NYC nowadays, get off the Price Street R train stop and just deal with the humanity/tourists. Makes you wish—no pun intended—the real 3 card monty folks were back on the street.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Parq:

Jake Gould, the East Village is now party central for the recent-college-grad types -- the Bros and Besties, as I call them. Every other business down there is a bar that caters to the college-tee-shirt crowd.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Parq:

And what's happened to Broadway south of Houston? Don't get me started.
Avatar 1:31pm Marc Francis:

On Friday I played a Spaceshits/King Khan & BBQ/King Khan & Shrines/Almighty Defenders run during my set. They've created such a great world of music...
Avatar 1:32pm Joe B:

not to mention a confusing discography with the several versions of this album, tie your noose, etc.
  1:35pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

Love this Feels cut! Chatted with them in Austin a year ago, the nicest people!
Avatar 1:36pm Joe B:

SCB Management, always workin it!
  1:36pm JakeGould:

@Parq: I recently walked through the East Village on a Friday night to see how bad it is… It’s wretched. Dude bros and sorority sisters dressed as hos.
Avatar 1:39pm Marc Francis:

@Joe B: Oh shit, I never realized there were different versions and even album covers. Weird.
Avatar 1:41pm Joe B:

at least 3 that i know of, not to mention some tracks appearing on different albums, sometimes in same versions, sometimes alternate versions or mixes
Avatar 1:41pm V Priceless:

wow - phantom tollbooth - nice
  1:42pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

Wow
Avatar 1:42pm geezerette:

Fucking great set!
Hey everybody,I feel your pain regarding loss of record stores, landmark historical buildings, diverse local bottom-up underground culture etc,. We lost Tower Records on Sunset Strip and now the Strip itself. Ugly big box "Dwell" style houses are replacing entire neighborhoods as if dropped from U.F.O.s overnight. It's a world wide phenomenon too;got friends in Europe, same there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Michael 98145:

my favorite Heart song
  1:42pm Polyus:

Pfft, no Michael Derosier, no peace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Dominick:

HAW!
Avatar 1:43pm Todd-o-phonic:

Wonder if Heart fan Rex and The Fool's Paradise Faithful are enjoying this cover.
Avatar 1:44pm Fox (Rā-chul):

Hullo everyone.
  1:47pm Dean:

@geezeretee: Book Soup's still there, though, right? Damn, Tower occupied *two* stores on Sunset Strip, the main store to the north and the Classical Annex across the street. I remember meeting Cheap Trick and the Ramones at the main store a billion years ago.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Neat old stuff closing sounds a lot like the SoDoSoPa development in South Park, Colorado. southpark.cc.com...
Avatar 1:49pm geezerette:

@Michael 98145: Friends in London say the new thing there is houses as deep under earth as they are tall. One floor below street level and several more above. Senseless! Same plan of covering entire plot with house,no setback from street.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Michael 98145:

we are experiencing Anarchy for Developers (tm)
Avatar 1:56pm geezerette:

@Dean: Yep,Book Soup still there and safe for now.
The Last Bookstore in DTLA is good and Alias Books in Atwater Village. Uphill battle but some little victories. Culture's pretty homogenous though. Cherish the bright spots!
  1:58pm Dean:

Last Bookstore gets press to this day. I worked in DTLA for some time, but before LB, I believe. Never had a chance to visit it. Downtown has largely improved since I left.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Nate K.:

@Geezerette, bummed to hear this about the Dwell houses. I've always liked LA's architecture.
  2:07pm Dean:

Speaking of architecture, it looks like the Hennessey + Ingalls bookstore moved from the west side to east of downtown.
  2:10pm herb.nyc:

NYTimes had a Fairway Vs Fancy article, about trend(oid)s in NYC. Ugh.
Avatar 2:12pm geezerette:

Oh the DT of Al's Bar days was definitely MUCH rougher!
@ Nate K: Yeah,L.A.,like N.Y., had it's own architecture and culture. There are still a lot of little "Spanish Colonial" buildings but reaching the tipping point in wrong direction. We had a film based culture and it was funny! You could walk down almost any street and see a Normandy Castle next to a Spanish Mission next to an English Tudor... It was all make believe and studio influenced, charming.
@Dean:East of DT is the current hot spot and it's really great.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Tim 07030:

Hi Joe! Just tuning in, glad I haven't missed 'Video Violence'!!
  2:19pm Polyus:

One day I will suck it up and lay down the $ for this Matrix Tapes set.
Avatar 2:20pm geezerette:

Matrix Tapes, soooooo good!
Avatar 2:21pm Joe B:

damn Tim I forgot all about that!
Avatar 2:21pm Joe B:

I'll wait until the complete Lou Reed albums box comes out later this year!
  2:22pm Dean:

Rougher, yes, but also boring as all get-out! Not counting Al's Bar--which was home away from home--signs of life emerged with MOCA, the Green Umbrella series at Japan America Theater, and Gorky's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Tim 07030:

Marking my calendar, Joe.
  2:24pm KP:

Awesome
Avatar 2:26pm Cecile:

so dean, you're saying a city got a little nicer and by that token more interesting? This fraidy-cat tourist is happy to hear that.
  2:31pm Polyus:

What is this Lou box you guys are speaking of? Like, the entire discography?
Avatar 2:31pm Cheri Pi:

What city are talking aboot C$?
Avatar 2:32pm Cecile:

Dean was talking about L.A., I think.
  2:32pm Dean:

That's a good way to put it, Cecile. I always thought LA could be nice, if you hung out at the right places, Al's Bar among them. But downtown was dreary and "edgy" at once. The east side was predominantly warehouses just south of Union Station. When Al's closed in 2002, I think, an artist neighborhood began to appear, and evidently it has flourished. Meanwhile, there is still a Skid Row closer to the center of downtown.
Avatar 2:33pm geezerette:

Many breakfasts at Gorky's! Vickman's & Phillipe's too. I actually liked the roughness and emptiness after twilight and on Sundays. I loved driving around in that empty industrial wilderness. The sky was huge. It was kind of like an urban desert.
Avatar 2:34pm Cheri Pi:

Gotcha, never been
Avatar 2:35pm Cecile:

me either, but it's nice to know.
Avatar 2:36pm Cecile:

geezerette, have you been to Detroit?
Avatar 2:36pm Cecile:

that's how it was in the 80s. Very deserted.
Avatar 2:36pm Cheri Pi:

I know some Cincinnatians who live it there!
  2:37pm Dean:

I remember a business trip to St. Louis a few years ago. I stayed downtown, which was rough and empty a la L.A., geezerette.

There's L.A. and L.A. It's just huge. You could spend a long weekend exploring the downtown area, but you'd be miles from, say, Hollywood or other parts west or east. Took me forty years to get used to the place. Then I left.
Avatar 2:37pm geezerette:

Here's the thing;there were artists down there from the mid to late 70's onward and you could get huge studio space for well under a buck a foot. Get a lot of work done that way.
  2:38pm Dean:

Friend of mine is the sister of David Amico, one of those artists at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Michael 98145:

All this LA talk is makin me want to hear some Plugz, Dils and the Alley Cats
Avatar 2:39pm Cheri Pi:

GERMS too
  2:40pm Dean:

I was thinking a couple days ago of Kommunity FK, whom I heard at Beyond Baroque. They might still be playing around.

Lord, the Germs. Nothing better, except maybe a triple bill with Screamers and Weirdos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Michael 98145:

Saw the Screamers at the Whisky once; will never forget that night
Avatar 2:42pm Cheri Pi:

Got to see the Weirdos in Cincy in the 80s! Or maybe early 90's
Avatar 2:42pm geezerette:

@Cecile:
@Cheri Pi:
Tourist tip, martinis at Musso&Frank's in Hollywood. Been there since 1919,Chaplin drank there. Strange old American menu. It's a time machine if you want it to be. Phonebooths fer Chrissake! :c)
Avatar 2:44pm Cecile:

I totally want to go to Musso's. I am a big martini and red meat fan.
Avatar 2:44pm geezerette:

David Amico still shows with Ace. Nice guy.
  2:44pm Dean:

Damn right, Musso & Frank martinis.
Avatar 2:45pm Cecile:

they are legendary. And they look so good when I see them on TV.
Avatar 2:46pm FernandoBelmondo:

Hi Joe! Check in late but it sounds like it might be the best 1/2 hour of rock and roll of the week.
Avatar 2:46pm Cheri Pi:

Make mine a dirty one, the dirtiest in the coop.
Avatar 2:47pm geezerette:

Musso's waiters are incredible old school pros.
Avatar 2:48pm geezerette:

Joe! This show!
(:c)
  2:48pm Dean:

I think the best martini I ever had, though, was at Celestino Drago's eponymous restaurant on Wilshire Blvd. On the sweet side, but beautiful.
Avatar 2:51pm Cheri Pi:

The best martini I had was in Austin in the early 90's, I'll never forget it
Avatar 🎸 2:54pm David Shortell:

Thanks everybody! been a blast! sorry for not keeping up with the comments, see youse next week
Avatar 🎸 2:56pm David Shortell:

If only Phil Collins had passed his Bugaloos audition, we might've been spared Genesis and his solo career!
  2:10am John from CDA:

Was the song from the Bugaloos for Uncle Michael?
  8:18am george faulkner:

The Rabies single was released in 1981
