The one I wish someone would release properly is "Shadows of Paris," an amazing Mancini torch song used as the opening theme for "A Shot in the Dark." I can only find that particular version at the beginning of the film, so it has film noise in it, like some footsteps and doors opening.

After Hours, Clue, Withnail & I, Murder By Death....my childhood favorites. Love seeing all your comments about these films! And this Global Communication record is brilliant from start to finish. Highly recommend it for any fans of ambient electronica.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
mariano:

It would be impossible to make a movie like After Hours today, at least with a modern setting. The whole plot hinges on someone being stranded in SOHO because he lost $20 out of a cab window. Today, the cab would take him to an ATM, or he'd just use a card, or use his phone to call a friend to borrow a few bucks. Plus SOHO would be full of people and open businesses.
Avatar 3:37pm
djsheilab:

@mariano You're so right. I always recommend it to people saying it's the best way to see what Soho was like in the 80s. So desolate. But Fanelli's was there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm

Murder by Death was a big fave as a kid. And as a grown-up copy editor, I now laugh even harder at Truman Capote's line, "Use your damn pronouns!!"

@djsheilalab, did Haunted Honeymoon ever make it on to your childhood radar? One of my favorite pseudo-scary movies as a kid! Gilda Radner, Gene Wilder, and Dom DeLuise in drag!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
mariano:

Oh yeah, Fanelli's has been there since forever, hasn't it? I worked for a while at 11 Madison, where the golden gates are where Griffin Dunne gets dropped off at the end, always got a kick out of walking in there every morning, especially if I was hung over and hadn't slept that much!

Hey Sheila, are you into Eurovision? I think you can see it in the US tomorrow. These days it's best watched in wine and on Twitter. Look out for Bulgaria's entry, a woman whose suspenders and earrings light up at the crescendo.

@Rob Kopp Ahhhh...I was playing her LP. That track isn't on there sadly. Thanks for the link.

Bulgaria? Watch Dutchman Douwe Bob with Slow down. He includes a break of 10 seconds in the song.

@Adrian In London I haven't watched Eurovision but I really enjoyed it the last time I did. Thanks for the reminder + tip! I miss London's Eurovision-watching parties.

@Adrian in London-- that was meant to say haven't watched Eurovision in awhile :) My multi-tasking skills are poor.

Sad to see Other Music go. I'd always scan the best-seller list and employees picks to learn what I needed to learn about the latest music. The vinyl display came back strong the last few years - helping me to re-ignite my vinyl collection after a few decades lapse. I'll miss chatting with Chris V. - it really was a music clubhouse. Music fans can continue to support Other Music Recording - the Boogarins release last year was exceptional (thanks to Evan Davies for that tip).

@Muddy, if they made it today, Dice would be the funeral roast sketch with the likes of Slappy White and Rip Taylor.
