LJW, geezerette, a pleasure as always. Glad we could embark on this extended journey together.

Yes indeed! My bedtime usually costs me a single-seating listen to the whole show!

...is there a bar on this stretch-limo horse?
Avatar 7:48pm

There's a canteen in one of the saddle bags. Not sure what's in it.
Some limes too.

I'm at the back, sketching the landscape. Probably won't be talking much, too busy looking, I mean listening!

Incidentally, if I'm not mistaken, "Narrowly Avoiding Mr. White" is the name of a never-produced Gary Marshall project from the early '80s.

I love hearing unexpected show tunes on WFMU, like Send in the Clowns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
listener james from westwood:

Cannot go wrong with Sondheim!
Avatar 9:31pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Interesting sung by an actor rather than supersinger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
melinda:

Agree, Rabbit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
listener james from westwood:

@melinda: Agreed. Jonesy sneaks in the odd show tune now and again. Monica has been a friend to B'way too. There was a running joke about a showtune ban @ WFMU in the 90s, but I think that was smoke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
melinda:

I know I've heard other show tunes here before but maybe because Send in the Clowns was a hit it seemed less likely.
Avatar 9:34pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The Great American Songbook - yerknow - if yer into Songwriting or Singers - or Jazz Standards - even if not Theater - there it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
listener james from westwood:

Oh! Charlie! Charlie's played the odd show tune. In both senses.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
coelacanth:

i'm sorry Sam, but i listened to 1/2 a Curtis Mayfield album while you played show tunes! (but then -maybe serving me right - i missed boredoms.)
Avatar 9:50pm
geezerette:

I'm a sucker for Sondheim.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
coelacanth:

i don't know Sondheim as such, but i do like a good "send in the clowns".
  9:55pm
Dean:

Despite an abiding distaste for show tunes, I'm also a sucker for Sondheim and for some renditions of show tunes. I utterly love "Send in the Clowns." Jarrett solo and with his trio delivers it transcendentally. It's Sondheim's music I adore over his lyrics. But then some of the lyrics in Sweeney Todd are really effective.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
Sam Segal:

No hard feelings, @Coelacanth. For many years, I found show tunes way to schmaltzy. Like @Rev was saying, it was through my love of standards that I started to dig in a little bit more and find the aching beauty beneath the glitz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm
Sam Segal:

Also, welcome @Dean!
  9:59pm
Dean:

A *pleasure* to be here!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:03pm
coelacanth:

i think it's the singing that i usually can't stand. (?)
...i passionately Love the (original) soundtrack to "hair", and i think it's because the usually technically poor singing is so passionate. (the music being excellent doesn't hurt either) ....like they're singing it because they mean it - not because they're acting.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:04pm
coelacanth:

(...but maybe i'm imagining things.)
  10:05pm
Dean:

Jesus, coelacanth, the Hair s/t was among the first LPs I bought, c.1969, and I never until 10:03 (your comment) considered it "show tunes." Damn, you're right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm
melinda:

I love Hair too. And JC Superstar. Maybe because they were the only musicals I knew as a child.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm
melinda:

Then again, I think we had West Side Story in the house too but it didn't have the same appeal.
Avatar 10:15pm
geezerette:

What's great about American Song book tunes is their extraordinary plasticity. They can be arranged, interpreted infinitely and each version can hit you with a different meaning, feeling. Jerome Kern and Cole Porter still sound contemporary, can be very minimal. Lots of Standards are from shows hardly anyone remembers now. Preaching to the choir!
Avatar 10:15pm
geezerette:

and hi Dean!
  10:16pm
Dean:

For sure, geezerette. Example among gazillions: Kiri Te Kanawa's recital of Kern. Bliss!

Hi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
melinda:

Yeah, it's always interesting to learn the show origin of a given standard.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
coelacanth:

true,g. - there are certainly Cole Porter songs i like that were penned for musicals.
Avatar 10:21pm
geezerette:

It's great to hear Jazz artists launch from those songs and completely surprise you.

Agree about Hair! Love the original cast album. Rado & Ragni captured so many things at once, incredible.
Avatar 10:24pm
geezerette:

Dean, yes,bliss!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
coelacanth:

-and MacDermot did a brilliant job with the music for "hair". i only wish it was produced like a "rock" act.
Avatar 10:35pm
geezerette:

But it could be,and that would make it new.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
coelacanth:

yeah, i haven't tried yet. my record was too scratchy so i got the cd. it sounds quite the same.
i always meant to re-record it onto another cd with some eq to give it more bass.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
coelacanth:

i'm digging the core to the core.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
melinda:

I saw a local theater production of Hair when I was in high school. It was pretty exciting. They got naked and everything.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
coelacanth:

sweet! i don't know why i've never gone to one, when i've known of a few.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
coelacanth:

...i remember when my father brought the hair st album home. my mother panicked a little, but he prevailed and we learned lots of new words! i, and my sister close to my age could sing to the entire album by the time i was about 8...but i didn't know the meaning of some of what i was mimicking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Sam Segal:

When I was 11-12, I wanted nothing more than to be a "hippie." I grew my hair out and started affecting the vocal ticks of a burnout. After seeing an episode of Cheers where Woody is supposed to be in a production of Hair, I demanded my parents take me next time it came to town. As luck would have it, I got to see a pretty professional production when it came to Minneapolis a few months later. The nude scene flipped my lid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
melinda:

Yes, 'Sodomy' was full of new words.
  10:46pm
Dean:

Hair was an education. A classmate of mine, fourth or fifth grade, went with his mom to the production in LA at the Shubert. I bought the album and learned the lyrics. We looked up certain words in the dictionary. (Exactly, Melinda!) We learned them. Degree granted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
melinda:

Sam that's a great story. I missed that Cheers episode, though, which is too bad because it sounds hilarious.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
coelacanth:

oh,man! i'm envious of both of you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
melinda:

I misheard some of the words.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
coelacanth:

yeh, melinda...bit by bit my older brother would tell me what most of those words meant. i remember being a little shocked! (though maybe intrigued!)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
coelacanth:

Dean, i think my mother hid the dictionary around that time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
melinda:

I think it's better to know the meaning of the words, otherwise you might end up innocently singing them in front of the wrong people.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
coelacanth:

haha, yeah! well by the time i was 12 half my friends were forbidden by their parents to hang out with me anyway!
  11:12pm
Dean:

Well, there's Sondheim and there's Nikhil Banerjee. Call it a show tune, I don't care. I love this man's music.
