Hi Nick and Veronica and everyone! Some pretty intense percussion, digging it very much.

I've actually never known a Veronica in real life. My alias was taken from Veronica in the Archies. LOL

The only Veronica I knew of for many years was the character in the Archie comics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19am

greetings Nick and others

@Ken - glad you remember Archie comics...I was totally in love with those & collected them as a kid, and then loved that Archies song "Sugar Sugar"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21am

i named my second car veronica! (the first one i bought outright.)
  12:21am
Veronica (the other one):

Woohoo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25am
mariano:

Anyone remember the weird evangelical Christian Archie comics? The guy who created it had a religious experience and did a run of religious-themed issues, really a trip: comicsalliance.com... My grandparents got me some of them when I was a kid, but even then I was like "Huh?"
  12:28am
Veronica (the other one):

That's hilarious. Never heard of those.
  12:33am
Veronica (the other one):

Woah, check out the history of the artist of those Christian Archie comics, Al Hartley: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Hartley

Veronica (the other one):

Hey, how do you add links to URLs? Do you have to be logged in with a profile?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42am
mariano:

Yeah, Al Hartley was a trip, interesting life. As for links, mine pasted in as a live link, not sure what the deal is though, ie if it's some setting on your browser or something.

Hello!

Veronica is a great name. Why don't more parents name their daughters Veronica?

I think you need to be signed in to create a link.

You're right @rw, it's time for a Veronica renaissance, it's a great name! One of my friends is named Veronica Otto, which in Italian is Veronica 8, very sci fi.
Avatar 12:53am
Veronica (OG):

Okay, I created a profile...wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55am
mariano:

Great graphic, @coelacanth: I'm working on a logo right now and I'm trying to make use of negative space in kind of the same way, the way the black part of the duck is empty space (I know, that last bit out of context sounds like a total stoner thing to say!), I'm trying to do it with one of the pillars of the Brooklyn Bridge though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56am
mariano:

God those Mahavishnu guys can JAM!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56am
coelacanth:

the only Veronica i ever met before i named my car Veronica was an older sister of a kid i knew. she was mean and i didn't like her, but for some reason my 11-year-old self was attracted to her!
...maybe subconsciously that's how i felt about that $150. car.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59am
coelacanth:

mariano i know what you mean and i'd bet your design will rule!
(...i don't know why i googled "fire breathing duck", to be honest; but i'm glad i did!)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09am

'looks like i missed any opportunity to see full blast. (d.2006)
  1:11am
Dean:

I think it was '05 when I saw them. It's disappointing that they're no longer touring.
  1:12am
Dean:

However, I did just see Brotzmann with John Edwards and Steve Noble. Yow. Solid, amazing performance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12am
coelacanth:

...although Brotzman still plays out, no? i've never seen him at all.
Avatar 1:13am
Veronica (OG):

Jinx - you both posted about Brotzmann at the same time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13am
coelacanth:

ya! i got to keep my eyes open for him.
  1:14am

Yes, he plays constantly. Along with Edwards/Noble a vibraphonist whose name I don't recall. A great show.

i've seen some amazing shows; but i've still got to be a bit envious sometimes!
Avatar 1:19am
Veronica (OG):

@coelacanth ha! you've lost since you spoke first en.wikipedia.org...
  1:22am
Dean:

Edwards and Noble were both stunningly good, completely familiar and at ease with each other's work. Brotzmann surrounds himself with great musicians. I've heard him as well with the Tentet, including Hamid Drake, Ken Vandermark, Toshinori Kondo, and others. His shows always energize me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23am
coelacanth:

mariano, maybe you'll make it your avatar for a minute when it's finished! i'm curious.

Veronica! damn it! is someone going to come here and punch my arm now?
Avatar 1:24am
Veronica (OG):

Or you can owe Dean a soda.

Dean:

Here's some representative Full Blast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLNiGvu-2qs

I like it when folks owe me a soda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25am
coelacanth:

i'm always impressed (via video) with Brotzman's humility among fellow musicians. -he's just committed to the outcome, not exalting himself.
  1:26am
Dean:

Looks like they've played post-2006, too!
Avatar 1:27am
Veronica (OG):

I can tell just from watching the first 30 seconds of that Full Blast video I'll love it...will save it for later watching. Thanks.
  1:29am
Dean:

Awesome, other Veronica! As it turns out, I'm heading to Chicago in two days. Was hoping to have a chance to hear Vandermark or somebody from his group, but really it's not likely. I will visit the revived Jazz Record Mart, though.
Avatar 1:30am

So much great jazz and free improv in Chicago...

...so little time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32am
mariano:

@coelacanth: I'll try to get a usable version cranked out by 3. In fact using it as an avatar would be a good test run because like any logo or icon it has to be recognizable at a very small size, which is the real challenge: lots of things look great at normal size, but when you shrink them down you get a blob.
Avatar 1:33am

Digging this Tashi Dorji

I used to use the user name coelacanth, but that definitely was not me unless some fight club shit is going on.
  2:29am
weird:

what are you working on mariano? I do my best work at night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35am
mariano:

Oh, hey @weird! Working on a logo for a company called Old City, they want a pillar of the Brooklyn Bridge to be the main visual next to the name, and they want to see a version where it's an angled shot so you can see some depth and perspective. The trick though is to do it with just black on a white background (or vice-versa), as simple as possible, but which is still recognizable at a small size. Lots of playing with angles and rotations in Illustrator.
  2:38am
weird:

oh yeah i have made icons in my day. it turns out I am more of an imax-resolution billions of colors kinda guy, but I think that pixel art is definitely a legit thing that is worth everyones time if you want to be well rounded as a visual artist. If there is any point to being a well rounded visual artist is another question.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51am
mariano:

I have mad respect for icon makers; anybody who can make a tiny, one-color silhouette of something fairly complex that's instantly recognizable to the eye knows what the hell they're doing. I'm trying to make a lot of the negative space do the work. The trick also is for it not to come out too cartoonish, their logo right now was made by someone who obviously just took a clip art of the bridge and slapped it next to the name, really embarrassing.
  2:53am
weird:

haha I feel ya, you dont want to get all panerra bread
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54am
mariano:

And yeah, my default mode as a designer is heavy saturation and contrast, layer upon layer of grunged-out textures in several different blending modes, and lots of tiny detail. Minimalism is a real challenge for me, kind of like the Zen meditation of design, trying to silence a hyperactive mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56am
mariano:

Tell you what though, this is one of the best shows for working on design projects, thanks as always Nick, and great chatting witchall!
  2:59am

well check out some of my stuff, it's quite saturated and contrasty and layered and blend modey and detailey ;) http://imwilmoth.tumblr.com/
