And for what it's worth, I absolutely agree that Brigtnman's "Fleurs" is bending towards Symphonic Metal. I'm keeping an eye on that genre lately, I know a LOT of people in their teens and twenties who are listening to more and more of it; i think artists like Brightman, her management and producers, and her mentor Andrew Lloyd-you-know-who are betting on Symphonic Metal to become a big thing, eventually much bigger even than it is now.

@P-90 There's a lot of good symphonic metal but at times it can also fall victim to self-parody. By that I mean putting in harsh male vocals that ruin a song or going a bit over the top with the operatic singing or instrumentation. To me bands like Nightwish are a mixed bag. You have to judge every song on its own merit.

I was just making more of a general comment that Symphonic Metal as a genre is growing in popularity, it's nowhere near it's peak and may be around fir a long time, and someone like Sarah Brightman and "her people" know this and see it as a natural area for her to explore.

@Julie: Good point, I see that album was 2008. (Why is time ticking so damn fast?!) Still "Symph Metal" was a natural trend for someone like Brightman to dip into. Her previous album was also "Classical Crossover" or whatever the damn shorthand label is, but softer

listener james: I miss Chris Lee a lot. He was a friend of my Dad's and I had the privilege of hanging out with him on a number of occasions, as an awestruck young man. (Chris would call the house to ask for my Dad, and if one of my little sisters answered the phone, his voice would scare her!) When I first knew Chris, his musical tastes were so traditional that he was still figuring out how to like The Beatles. But he did love Stephen Sondheim's musicals. So for Chris to wind up narrating and singing on Metal albums was quite a progression...

@geexerette: I grew up with Famous Monsters Magazine! Forrest Ackerman, the editor, had a fantastic mansion in LA that was filled with his incredible collection of memorabilia, including things like Lon Chaney's makeup kit, the models from the original King Kong, books, posters, original paintings, etc. Growing up in NY, I'd see pictures of his mansion in the magazine, and never thought I'd ever go there myself, it was an impossible dream. Then I moved to LA as a teen and got to meet "Forry" and visit his house and collections. Miracles DO happen!

P-90, "Forry" was a hero of mine when I was in grade school! Never visited his house but when the internet was new and wild I emailed him and had a lovely little correspondence with him.

There was a college radio DJ in the 1990s who played some tunes off the Wicker Man soundtrack and that's how I first heard about it. She highly recommended the movie so I made it a point to seek it out which was difficult back then.
