This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

hmmm, i'm having an Old Overholt on the rocks but i feel like maybe i should have gone and scored some ganja for this one. i'll make do.

Ed! Hyde! Welcome friends!

One should always have something tucked away for times like these. And other times, unlike these. Overholt will do though

Such a good late Mittoo track

It has seemed to me to be popping up all over the place, not only as a subject of critical and historical discussion, but also as a living notion which contemporary artists have been aspiring to add to

The group that is "Creation Rebel" at this time is the original backing group for the Great Prince Far I
Avatar 7:39pm
Flash Strap:

didn't mean to capitalize "great" there. It's not a part of his name obviously. He's just capital-G GREAT I guess
Avatar 7:43pm

great ping pong echoes on this one
Avatar 7:46pm
hyde:

the cool things that i watched recently that has been deemed sort of afro-futurist were Terence Nance's shorts MOONRISING and SWIMMING IN YOUR SKIN AGAIN. (free to watch on Vimeo: Moon vimeo.com..., Swimming vimeo.com...) Though i know when prompted, he said he thought he was more an afrosurrealist than afrofuturist, for whatever these labels are worth. i hear he worked on LEMONADE, though i haven't yet watched LEMONADE.
Avatar 7:46pm
Flash Strap:

I love dub with electric guitar
Avatar 7:49pm
Flash Strap:

That is all totally unknown to me Hyde, and I am just HUNGRY to explore it. The notion of afrosurrealism seems really important.
Avatar 7:55pm
hyde:

he made another short too, called NATIVE SUN (vimeo.com...) that i didn't like as much as the other two but is ok. he also made a feature (AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY), which i think felt like a kind of overlong student film though it isn't without its charms.
Avatar 7:55pm

Oh yeah, I remember when that last one came out! I was intrigued but I never saw it. I got that impression of it as well

Prince Fari, King Tubby, and Lee Perry are definitely Avant Garde. They got me to see Jamaican music for what it was, and not just what dumb stoner frat boys listen to while smoking weed (usually Bob Marley, but I found to like him eventually too).

@ngh yeah, King Tubby. i bought Rockers Meets King Tubby in a Firehouse in the early 80's when i was a clueless young college student, and it blew my mind. still maybe my fave dub album ever.

Avatar 8:17pm

@coel i love garvey's ghost too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
coelacanth:

...when Bob Marley died someone (who knew i liked reggae) said "that must hit you pretty hard" (or something) and i had to say i wasn't that into him.... i did ultimately grow to Love Bob Marley's music, but it was never my favorite.
Avatar 8:22pm
Flash Strap:

As a kid, I loved Jimmy Cliff and the Harder they Come soundtrack, but through my teens mostly resisted reggae... when I was 18 or so a friend of mine went to Jamaica on a family trip and a couple of pals got to go along, including me. We met a guy at our bourgie vacation spot who took us up into the mountains and showed us his very rural, humble life. It was my first real brush with the "3rd world" I think, and I was so eye-opened. He played us some Burning Spear, or something... anyway, it radically altered my context for Jamaican music in general. Made it real, not tourist sounds but the true sounds of an existing people.

I met Spear once, briefly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
coelacanth:

hyde - one thing i'm Thankful for is that i heard garvey's ghost out of context. i'd never heard Burning Spear and didn't know it was based upon an earlier album, so it totally cracked me up!...the bits of phrases and the background vox that seemed to be just silliness to me!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:23pm

Avatar 8:35pm
hyde:

The Harder They Come was a massive gateway drug for this stuff when i was a punk. when i was in high school (so maybe 1979? 1980?) me and my friends drove from the burbs to the old Orson Welles Cinema in Cambridge to see it, that was a big deal.

And Burning Spear? I bought those records sometime after that at Strawberries (anyone remeber Strawberries? that was a fairly cool chain record store!). Winston Rodney's voice is just so amazing, it's irresistable. The other record i bought then (also at Strawberries!) that remains with me to this day is Culture's Two Sevens Clash. That's another record I'd shoot to the stars for aliens to find so they'd know about what human beings are all about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm

early culture was incredible! they (he) never got bad either; just a bit redundant.
that same friend turned me on to them with "international herb", which is still my favorite.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm

Peter Tosh's lyrics grabbed me before my friend came and busted my world open.
when i started exploring on my own that first burning spear album blew my mind! my favorite 'spear album...also discovered Linton Kwesi Johnson, who is still among my favorites.
