I know many folks who in live in LA and like it. I understand that. It can be fun to visit short-term, but inevitably when I'm out there I find the place soul-deadening. I once asked Breckman why he didn't live there, since (at the time) he was working in films and TV. He said he didn't like the place because "it's a godless town."

That bookstore! A damn pity.

@Irwin: I can sympathize. It took me 40 years to get it. (And then, ironically, I moved away.) I don't think it's godless. I think LA is a sprawling pantheon of many gods. One less now that Bodhi Tree is gone.

Irwin you're not wrong. I used to love it because it was such an absurd place; and all that Hollywood history everywhere. It's losing it's sense of place so quickly now, like everywhere. Not as funny.

I visited LA for the first time a couple of winters ago, just after the holiday season. The sidewalks were strewn with discarded brightly colored synthetic Christmas trees, awaiting disposal. My thought: "I've a feeling I'm not in New England anymore". I was immediately won over, but perhaps in a short-term sort of way.

I never understood the song well enough to realize that they (I assume it was a Collingswood song, but who knows) were ridiculing a burnout. I just love the sound of it. One of the greatest turn-that-the-fuck-up tracks FOW has done, and that's a sizable roster.
