Avatar 8:13am ndbob:

Heya Doug - a quick question - is this going to be an all jazz show or the usual mix?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am Doug Schulkind:

Mostly all jazz, ndbob.
Avatar 8:15am ndbob:

ah ok Doug
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:19am Jeff Golick:

Hi, Doug. Wishing you and yours and all present a Happy Coltrane's birthday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21am Doug Schulkind:

Feel free to take this one off, ndbob. Or stick around for as long as you like.

@Jeff Golick
And we shall celebrate. Together.
Avatar 8:23am ndbob:

I'll stick around for a while - maybe not the entire show
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:26am doctorjazz:

Lotsa' jazz works for me (though the usual mix does too)
HAPPY FRIDAY, Doug and drumma's!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:28am doctorjazz:

And, a very Happy Coltrane Birthday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31am Doug Schulkind:

@ndbob
I understand. Take the pleasure as you find it!

Happy Friday and happy John William Coltrane Day, doctorjazz!
Avatar 8:32am ndbob:

I mean I know Coltrane is great -totally agree - but with the more freeform material he tends to be a guilty non-pleasure for me - but I will certainly give it a try:)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:42am Gary:

I've got a series of phone meetings I need to be on this morning and part of this afternoon, but am looking forward to listening to this in the archives. THANK YOU DOUG FOR DOING THIS

I may be mistaken, but I believe everyone BUT Dizzy Reece on this record played with John Coltrane. Or at least recorded with John Coltrane:

Dizzy Reece ~ trumpet, flugelhorn
Clifford Jordan ~ tenor sax
Charlies Davis ~ tenor sax
Albert Dailey ~ piano
Art Davis ~ bass
Roy Haynes ~ drums
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:26am listener james from westwood:

Thanks for giving Dizzy the spins!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Doug Schulkind:

Pianist Albert Dailey also appears on Archie Shepp's LP "Ballads for Trane."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

LOVE that, Listener James. It reminds me of the LP I have called "Madness in Opera." It is a compilation of "freak-out" arias from famous operas put out by the psychopharmacology company Lederle Laboratories.

And it is nonfictional.

Just looked up Bob Thiele on the net. That is funny that he was a producer (I assumed he was a flautist) because I was noticing how excellent the reverb was on that flute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

Long may you rally, Scott!

Is it better to be right or sound right, βrian?

@chromaphone
Fun fact: Bob Thiele was married to the pop/jazz singer Teresa Brewer.

Yes, Doug there is a west Louisville that is primarily African American and a south Louisville which is working class and immigrants. I live in central Louisville which is near downtown and in an historic working class neighborhood called Schnitzelburg where nearly all the houses are shotguns style.
  10:25am Listener Gregory:

That Albert Ayler sounded much like Arthur Blythe to me, Doug. Is there a connection there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Other than the Great Brotherhood of the Vibrato, I know of no known connection.

Like in a dream, holland oats, like in a dream.
  10:30am Listener Gregory:

Ah, the GBoV. I applied once, but they said they lost my application. I got the message.
  10:33am Lore:

I love Arthur Blythe's story about the origin of his nickname, from Steven Isoardi's book "The Dark Tree": "I had been reading...about musicians at the turn of the century. There was one particular musician, Jim Europe, and I was amazed at what he was doing with all those instruments. We were drinking a little bit, and I was expressing my newfound understanding or newfound validation of black people's efforts. I said, 'Yeah, that's really valid!' I was just talking and talking, and they were saying, 'Okay, okay, we believe you.' I just kept on...Then Linda Hill said, 'Please, Black Arthur, will you shut up!' And it stuck. I didn't mind. I was glad. The image was a little recognition from my peers...So I chose, 'Yeah, this is who I am. I'm Black Arthur.'"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:33am listener james from westwood:

Good good Gil here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

@Lore
I have always pretended to myself that when Columbia signed Arthur Blythe, they made him leave of the "Black: from his name. Probably not true, but I still blame Columbia.

Morning. I see a mention of opera back in the chat-stack here. That's as good an excuse as any to tell you, Diamond Doug, if you haven't heard, that something I mentioned here quite a while back, the opera about Josh Gibson, composed by a local acquaintance, is a comin' to where for a full production?...Pittsburgh Opera! ...in the spring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:
