Favoriting JA In The AM with John Allen: Playlist from October 12, 2016 Favoriting

"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Favoriting October 12, 2016: Sam Coomes live in Studio B
Sam Coomes stops by FMU accompanied by an organ and a mid-‘60s rhythm box. Best known as half of the long running underground pop duo Quasi, Sam has concurrently played and recorded with the likes of Built to Spill, Elliott Smith and Jandek. On his first ever solo album “Bugger Me”, he channels Suicide, Surfer Girl era Beach Boys, Chris Montez and Timmy Thomas, making ‘timeless outside entertainment music that speaks to the same sense of the absurd’.

Sem! George! I need you guys to talk to the people on here. We need some pledges. Make it convincing please.

AndrewC.:

I am swag for life. I highly recommend it. You can listen to pledge drives without guilt. Money is deducted painlessly every month. Music sounds better also. Everyone join swag for life! And credit it to JA.

thanks AC!

Nice morning music...

With the departure of JM in the AM, WFMU is going through a serious financial crisis. This is not the little boy who cried wolf. If you're listening to John's show, you know how great this station is. I don't want to even contemplate what life would be without it. Please, please, please donate to help keep freeform radio alive.

Haven't heard John Martyn in a while, thanks for reminding us how great he was!

Love Bobby Hutchinson. Had the pleasure of seeing him one night at a club in Hollywood. A memorable night of beautiful music. Your set is really hitting the spot for me this early morning.

Nice to hear the beginning of the show in drive time...

Amazing set!!

George of Troy:

Missed my cue earlier, it seems.

So even if you are a swag-for-lifer like AndrewC and myself (despite my missing playlist icon), you can still kick in above and beyond that amount during a month like this, when things are looking as grim as Mark R described earlier.

good morning all.. stayed under the warm covers longer this am.

While a music lover from an early age, I had nothing like free-form radio to expand my musical vision. Since I have been listening to WFMU I've been exposed to music genres orders of magnitude greater than I ever would have explored on my own. The few hundred a year I contribute here in no way represents the value I receive thanks to 'FMU volunteer DJ's and the non-trivial amounts of time, and passion, they bring to the programming. Just the infrastructure that makes the streams and the archives and Monty Hall alone possible consume many dollars every day. I urge you to keep the great experiment in free-form radio going here and give what you can this month.

Vincent Nifigance:

Agreed. I went Swag For Life yesterday. I urge you all to do the same, There's always £9:00 worth of junk a month I can do without.

annie:

so, i'll step into this, too. i live on a very limited income, yet i decided that FMU is worth the $40/month i chip in. it's painless, really. no check to write, it just slips off my debit in the middle of every month. easy peasy. best investment i've ever made.

Enjoying Sam's set. And the album that occasioned it.

Damnit I missed ZZ Top

What Sem, Annie, and Vincent said. Also it's nice to hear this on 91.1 this morning. Wish it could be so after JM in the AM departs. For some reason at the moment I fear the new, though I shouldn't....

Ike:

Though if you play more ZZ Top and find a weather lady to banter with, maybe you'll get the gig, John! Har har.

Been great this AM, John. Nothing new in that;-D
See you and the Allenites next time, the gods willing.
