Listener comments!

Greetings, all! Today's "Tape Hiss" will be a little different than usual -- more indie rockish, in parts anyhow.

listener james from westwood:

Good Tuesday, Tony and all! Northern NJ is dark and rainy; fitting in its way. Glad for the sunshine of Tape Hiss!
Avatar 12:02pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, LJ! Predictably, it's bright and sunny here in the rainy, but contrarian Northwest.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:07pm
listener james from westwood:

You've earned it out there. Argh, hope you and yours are well. I've been a stress ball here in bluish-purple New Jersey. WFMU has helped with that (esp. now that it hit its $ goal!).
Avatar 12:10pm
Tony Coulter:

Yes, we are well -- and slowly preparing for our new dark overlords.

northguineahills:

Autumn has finally hit my shell of boredom in Trumplorida.. actually got down to 47F/8C, although it will get up to 75F/24C later today.
Avatar 12:19pm
Tony Coulter:

Hola, NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
northguineahills:

Did Fiction have other releases? The name sounds familiar.
Avatar 12:23pm
Tony Coulter:

Don't think so, no. Perhaps there are other groups with the same name? And, of course, there's Friction.
Avatar 12:23pm
Cecile:

hola, tony!
Avatar 12:24pm
Cecile:

thinking about Fred...
Avatar 12:24pm
Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Cecile!

Tony Coulter:

Fred?
Avatar 12:26pm
Tony Coulter:

Flintstone?
  12:28pm
MrFab:

Ricky Ricardo's friend?
Avatar 12:29pm
Cecile:

Our friend in Paris who comments a lot here, and who will be having open-heart surgery this week.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:29pm
JtotheK:

hi Tony, hello . . . everyone!
Avatar 12:31pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: Oh, didn't know about that. Sorry for the flippancy, and all the best luck to Fred.
Avatar 12:32pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, JtotheK!
Avatar 12:34pm
Cecile:

that's OK.
Avatar 12:36pm
Tony Coulter:

Unlike most of the groups heard here on Tape Hiss, Fiction seems like it might have had some commercial potential, back in the days when synth pop was big.
Avatar 12:36pm
Tony Coulter:

What I can't decide is if the vocalist is actually British, or just trying to sound a bit British.
  12:38pm
MrFab:

Best of luck to Monsieur Fred, open heart surgery is nuthin to mess with.

(But, to be honest, I DO think about Fred Flintstone and Ricky Ricardo's friend. Far too often.)
Avatar 12:38pm
Cecile:

If it was in Michigan, they were trying to sound British.
Avatar 12:38pm
Cecile:

Anglophilia was strong there
Avatar 12:45pm
Tony Coulter:

They could have worked a bit harder on the cover design....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
listener james from westwood:

Hugest of luck to our Fred, and best wishes for a full recovery!
Avatar 12:53pm
Carmichael:

Heya Tony and Hissers.
Avatar 12:55pm
Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, Carmichael!
Avatar 1:05pm
Carmichael:

Fiction does not exist on the internet, so I guess they don't exist.
Avatar 1:06pm
Tony Coulter:

They are Fictional.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
northguineahills:

Ok, I'm pretty sure I've heard of Horsey...
Avatar 1:08pm
Tony Coulter:

They released this thing in '93: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 1:19pm
Cecile:

better listen to what the man sayyyyssss. sounded like Wings at first kinda.
Avatar 1:20pm
Tony Coulter:

Ha!
Avatar 1:31pm
Tony Coulter:

This tape came out 16 years before I moved to Portland, but I still see releases by many of these bands in the shops out here (second hand)
Avatar 1:32pm
Chris from DC:

Haven't heard Bugskull in a really long time.
Avatar 1:34pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Chris!
Avatar 1:35pm
Tony Coulter:

Word of warning: This tape on now may be hard to accuplaylist accurately....
Avatar 1:37pm
Tony Coulter:

But I will do me bestest.....
Avatar 1:42pm
Tony Coulter:

The Astro-Zombies were from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, long before ... well, you know.....
Avatar 1:42pm
Cecile:

Big Black and Pavement were big back in olden times, weren't they dad?
Avatar 1:45pm
Tony Coulter:

Yep, back in the time of the dinosaurs.....
  1:45pm
MrFab:

Ha, was just thinking that Cecile. Hello, noise rock! Was a fan (and participant) back in the college-rock days. Don't forget Butthole Surfers.
Avatar 1:46pm
Cecile:

I saw them more than I saw bands I liked, Mr Fab.
Avatar 1:47pm
Tony Coulter:

Surfing Big Black Buttholes on the Pavement (Sorry!)
Avatar 1:48pm
Cecile:

hahhahah
with a side of Die Kreuzen and a little Pixies dust.

This is definitely blowing the cobwebs outta the ol' noggin! Dig it!

I only vaguely remember Astro-Zombies via an ad in a zine. Maybe a review. Not sure. This definitely falls somewhere between what I call the Ugly Atonal 80s and Amrep 90s aesthetics.
Avatar 2:08pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey ho, Rich!
Avatar 2:13pm
Tony Coulter:

Amrep as in Amphetamine Reptile Records? There's a scene I know virtually nothing about....
Avatar 2:16pm
Cecile:

Some of it's crap, but some of it's great. They also put out a feedtime record and reissued all the Urinals's stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
Rich in Washington:

I've really been on an 80s (Buttholes, Feedtime, Stickmen W/Rayguns, Big Black, Scratch Acid, Killdozer) & 90s (AmRep catalog, Cheater Slicks, Pain Teens, God Bullies, Jesus Lizard, Cop Shoot Cop, Cabbages & Kings, Swans, etc) noise rock kick lately.
Avatar 2:29pm
Tony Coulter:

Are the God Bullies gods who bully, or bullies who bully God?
  2:29pm
MrFab:

Boredoms!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm
Rich in Washington:

Boredoms - YES!
Avatar 2:34pm
Cecile:

this particular piece is something that got stomped out when indy rock hit it big. Loads less random weirdness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm
Rich in Washington:

Kinda young, kinda wild. Charlie.
Avatar 2:37pm
Cecile:

But this is what survived to this day. idiotic covers.
Avatar 2:37pm
V Priceless:

pretty sure Bobby Short did the original version of this fragrance
Avatar 2:40pm

Greets, VP!
