Bonjour, Monsieur Charlie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm listener james from westwood:

Howdy, Charlie and all! That's a perfectly good chair, that is.
  12:03pm Listening Out There:

Welcome Bach, host... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Charlie:

hey annie, ßrian, james, Listening!
Have a seat, why don'tcha?
Avatar 12:05pm Michael:

Hiya Charlie.
Avatar 12:05pm Scraps deSelby:

h'lo hey hoo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Charlie:

Hey there, Michael :)
Avatar 12:06pm Carmichael:

Heya Charlie and those sitting close around the radio. Good opening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Charlie:

Howdy, Scraps! and Carmichael!
Avatar 12:09pm Scraps:

Oh, that's one of my favorite Betty Davis songs. Two or three.
  12:10pm jan:

hear here!
Avatar 12:10pm Scraps:

YEEOW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm northguineahills:

If I didn't know any better, I'd say the pic looks like the front of my friend's old studio in Greenpoint.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Charlie:

Jan -- glad you're hear, I mean here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Charlie:

hey, NGH -- I think that's Long island City
Avatar 12:15pm βrian:

Some dim the lights, some turn them up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Parq:

All this sex-cruising stuff brings to mind a Woody Allen line, in which he noted that he was involved in an early experiment in birth control. He asked a girl to schtup him, and she said no.
Avatar 12:18pm βrian:

But NO shoes, thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Uncle Michael:

No cover of this song has ever captured the creepiness of the Randy Newman original.
Avatar 12:19pm ndbob:

afternoon Charlie and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm doctorjazz:

Hi all you nothingers!
Nice cover, this Etta James.
(did anyone hear the last JM in the AM this morning? Ken was there. I generally can't listen to this show, reminds me of my bad Hebrew school days, but it made me a bit moist eyed to hear it...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Charlie:

hey Parq, I remember that line!
Hey Uncle Michael! Yes, I suppose you're right. But this is weird in its own right...
Avatar 12:21pm Scraps:

Might you like you better....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Charlie:

welcome doctorjazz & ndbobbarino!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Parq:

UM, heard him interviewed once, and he noted that both Joe Cocker and Tom Jones had big hits with blaring rave-up versions, while his version just sort of sat there commercially. "I could be living in Maui!" he noted sadly.
Avatar 12:21pm βrian:

Boy, does this bring back memories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm listener james from westwood:

Today was the last JM? Aw nertz, I was gonna listen in; thought it'd be tomorrow's show. One last "It's time to say 'Good Shabbos'" rendition. End of an era!
Avatar 12:22pm Scraps:

"Sadly". He got big royalties
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm listener james from westwood:

Or as Nachum might say, "I might like you better if we schlepped together."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Uncle Michael:

Well, he should have been just as able to live on Maui on his songwriting royalties from those as he would have from having a hit with it himself.
Avatar 12:23pm Scraps:

Coke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Uncle Michael:

Randy Newman crying poor is pretty sad.
Avatar 12:24pm Scraps:

I'll bet he was very, very dry about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Parq:

Uh, sorry. I just thought it was funny, that's all. Wrong-Page-Parq, as usual.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Hi Charlie! I just tuned in moments ago. Now I have to look up that Alex Chilton song I missed. With a title like that, I'm intrigued...
Avatar 12:26pm Scraps:

I wasn't attacking you, Parq
Avatar 12:26pm βrian:

This Tipsy track name would be perfect for a cocktail, too.
Avatar 12:28pm βrian:

Love that playful sneer implicit in the Romeo Void song.
Avatar 12:28pm Scraps:

Any Tipsy song would be a great talkover song. Very good!
Avatar 12:31pm Scraps:

Brian, there is a Tipsy song entitled "Liquordelic", too
Avatar 12:32pm βrian:

@Scraps: I wonder if absinthe was the inspiration.
Avatar 12:33pm Scraps:

Cool for cats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Webhamster Henry:

OK Cool For Cats! Throws me back to 1979!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Webhamster Henry:

A friend of mine in college came back from England with "fun" New wave records like this .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm listener james from westwood:

1987, me. The Squeeze best-of was on near-constant rotation in my dorm. First I'd heard 'em. (Roxy Music, too.) Who says college is an idle pursuit?
Avatar 12:36pm Michael:

Fun Guys sounded ok Charlie. What day of the week was audition nights.
Avatar 12:39pm Scraps:

I had a US 10-inch, six songs, that paper hands "squeezed" the lp
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Charlie:

Michael, I think audition nights were Mondays. Or maybe Tuesdays. We played audition night a few times, but never got asked back for a real gig. But there was a good crowd that night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Uncle Michael:

Scraps, I still have that 10".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm doctorjazz:

KINKS!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Charlie:

I played Cool for Cats from the picture sleeve 7-inch.
Avatar 12:41pm Michael:

Interesting. I know it wasn't Sunday. Did sound pretty good.
Avatar 12:44pm Scraps:

None of my vinyl survives move several times from/to Seattle and New York (and one stopoff to Austin)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Charlie:

CB's had a great sound system! and good people behind the board. Guaranteed a good sounding tape.
  12:49pm rf:

What did you play in the band?
Avatar 12:53pm annie:

...oh yes....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Charlie:

hey, rf -- I played rhythm guitar, occasional lead lines, sang backup vox and the occasional lead vocal
  12:56pm rf:

It's very cool that you have that recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Charlie:

yeah, i've got lots of old stuff like that. jeez, 34 years ago!
Avatar 12:59pm Scraps:

God, so, so, so, so wonderful
Avatar 12:59pm Jeff:

And of course I'd contend that the most compelling song ever from the perspective of the yearning and maybe just a tiny bit bitter third wheel is Ani DiFranco's "Untouchable Face". Unsafe for radio air, but playable on the miracle which is a stream.
Avatar 1:00pm ndbob:

Nice story there Charlie!
Avatar 1:00pm ndbob:

sing it Charlie:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm listener james from westwood:

Charlie singalong! w00t!
Avatar 1:01pm Jeff:

Charlie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Parq:

Sing along with Charlie. Where's that bouncing ball when we need it?
Avatar 1:01pm annie:

heart this....
Avatar 1:02pm Michael:

Chazaloo sings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm doctorjazz:

We need to set up a duet, Charlie and Amanda!
(sounding great, Charlie!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Webhamster Henry:

We have to bring the Telephone Jam back to WFMU!
Avatar 1:03pm annie:

i am seriously getting chills
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm doctorjazz:

I can sing, can I get a Give The Drummer Some show? (even harmonize, if anyone needs it).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Charlie:

Jeff -- don't know that Ani DiFranco song...
doctorjazz -- i'd love to do a duet with Amanda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm JtotheK:

good afternoon everyone.
Avatar 1:06pm ndbob:

I just found two June Christy LPs in really good condition for fifty cents.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Charlie:

bob -- good deal! I love June...
Hey there, JtotheK!
Also, belatedly, hi Jeff and Henry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Charlie:

and Wendy! I missed your entrance:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Wendy del Formaggio:

That's okay. I ran in right as you were doing your mic break. I snuck in!
Avatar 1:09pm βrian:

Charlie was crooning while I was getting lunch? I'll have to catch that on the archive!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Charlie:

Wendy -- sneaky!
who else have i missed?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Parq:

Wow, that was the Coasters? Never heard them sound like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Charlie:

Parq -- on that album, each song is sung by one Coaster as a soloist, with the others as b/u and doing standards and such. A departure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Charlie:

Knock knock...
Avatar 1:22pm βrian:

I got caught playing doctor with the neighbor when I was very young. I learned quite a bit, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Charlie:

ßrian -- me too!
Avatar 1:24pm Scraps deSelby:

James Brown said that Sweet Charles did that slapped-bass thing before Larry Graham or Bootsy Collins did it. Well, that's what James Brown said...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm northguineahills:

Me too Brian (although her parents and mine didn't seem to care, but I was so embarrassed)
Avatar 1:26pm Scraps deSelby:

Yo baby!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Charlie:

Scraps -- and who are we to argue with James Brown?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm northguineahills:

I mean, what was I supposed to do w/ the doctor playset I got for xmas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Charlie:

ngh -- makes sense
Avatar 1:27pm Scraps deSelby:

Can't believe Estep is dead. Sigh
Avatar 1:27pm βrian:

We were quite confident we were engaged in the objective pursuit of knowledge. But parents can be weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Webhamster Henry:

Ahh, Maggie , died in 2014 only 50 or so.
Avatar 1:27pm Wilson K:

Well this is totally amazing.
Avatar 1:30pm βrian:

Keep your boom-boom in your room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Charlie:

Henry, Scraps -- that was quite a bummer:(
hello there, Wilson K:)
Avatar 1:36pm Roberto:

I got a Facebook friend request from Liz Phair a few days ago. Turned out it wasn't really Liz Phair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Charlie:

Roberto -- that's not phair at all!
Avatar 1:38pm Roberto:

Actually, Estep's death a few years ago prompted me to finally get my affairs in order. 50 years old, seemingly perfectly healthy, a vegan and a yoga practitioner...just dropped dead one day. A real wake-up call.
  1:39pm βrian:

Damn, Charlie, you're really fluffing it! Great show!
Avatar 1:44pm Scraps:

Joni Mitchell is great great great. At least up to Hejira, which is, what, nine excellent to great albums? Just, wow. To me.
Avatar 1:44pm Carmichael:

Book-ending the Alex Chilton, I see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Charlie:

yup!
Avatar 1:51pm βrian:

Even the most perfect of Persian carpets needs a flaw, right? Charlie understands this.
Avatar 1:54pm ndbob:

excellent show Charlie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Charlie:

I'm all about the flaws;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Charlie:

thanks, everyone!
stay tuned for Matt: wfmu.org...
see you next time:)
Avatar 2:00pm Scraps:

Thank you!
Avatar 2:00pm βrian:

Well, Golly. That was swell. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm listener james from westwood:

Fun ride as always, Charlie; thanks!
Avatar 2:01pm Michael:

Thanks Charlie - well done as always!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm northguineahills:

Thanks Charlie!
  11:36am frenchee:

Oh Charlie! You're playing all my songs! And then you're *singing*--an early Xmas present. LOL
