Hey Kurt and peeps! Looking back on this extended fill-in run, I'd like to offer up a nice round of virtual applause for that 4-hour 'singles going steady' program back in October! Truly a Herculean accomplishment, when you take a moment to think about it!

so y'all, i had a dream last night that there was a song on my playlist called "kill a bigger tree" by the acad. (period included). i woke up worrying about how to find it. i need your help. can you record "kill a bigger tree" by 6:45 and send it to me? thanks!
  3:14pm
Dean:

Seconded, VP.

Indeed, AM is one fun label. At one time it was associated with the marvelous Montreal record store L'Oblique. Not sure that remains the case, but L'Oblique is where I first heard Klaxon Gueule (and Amon Tobin).

Kill bigotry? Or sometimes a bigger tree is just a bigger tree?

interesting, bigotry.

When this song aired on the radio during the early '70s one would stop everything and listen. The recorder, production, deliberate tempo...an oddity at the time, and still.

I enjoy the early stuff through, say, Drumming or Music for 18 Musicians, less so the later stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm

Music for 18 Musicians was where I used to draw the line, but as I fogify, I find myself appreciating the later stuff as well.
Avatar 6:18pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

veep, that's 497 in cat years.

dean, not trying to argue the point too much, i guess i've just come to see it as more of a continuum - one long pursuit - rather than parts to be judged against one another.

good lord. 71.
Avatar 6:21pm
glenn:

but i will never, ever, ever, ever like kiss.
  6:22pm
Dean:

I'm even more picky about Glass. I think I only really like the violin concerto. It's possible, though, that there's so much Glass crammed into that concerto that I'm just sated when I hear it.

Nor am I eager to draw lines, and my rationales are not all well-formed, for sure. It's more a matter of my having "gotten" Drumming and the early recordings that toy with phase, where the more mature "compositions" and their programmatic accoutrements--think Different Trains, or the car horns here--just don't grab me. Not sure why (not).
Avatar 6:25pm
V Priceless:

or I should say cat-made island, my bad
Avatar 6:25pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

i will never, ever not kinda slightly like kiss, nor never will i like glass over reich (though i think he's supposed to be much more personable in person).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm
northguineahills:

For me, I used to be turned off by the later Glass and Reich works b/c they seemed more 'polished' and set for people who believe they have bourgeois tastes. That said, I've always loved Glass's trilogy for some reason, and that just doesn't make sense to me based on my aforementioned criteria.
Avatar 6:26pm

i've seen both glass and reich, and if i recall correctly, reich has much better stage patter.

Glass makes me nuts. Never ever got him, and totally unashamed to say so. Like Reich and James Tenney though. Also Carl Stone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm
northguineahills:

I seen both as well, and Reich was more approachable. However, in '98, I saw Glass in Gainesville, FL, and 50 year-old guy ran up on stage during the performance, and yelled "you call this music!", threw his coat and ran off. It got a smile from Philip and made my night. (the guy's pearl-clutching wife was mortified).
  6:29pm
Dean:

Then there's Adams. I *really* don't like Adams, nuh-uh, not even a little. HOWEVER, I did once attend a concert featuring Short Ride in a Fast Machine staged, IIRC, by Peter Sellars (don't get me started). It was a pleasure to hear live.

I didn't get a chance to record it, but I have written for you the song "Kill a Bigger Tree":
-----

Kill a bigger tree for Christmas
Kill a bigger tree this year
Our holidays are usually listless
But this year the children will be near

Kill a bigger tree for Johnny!
Kill the tree for Becky dear
Buy sachets of frangipani
For this one last time we’ll all be here

Sure, without your diagnosis
Grown-up kids would never come back here
So it takes a bad prognosis...
Still the tree will be so fine this year!

Here are the lyrics:

To Kill A Bigger Tree

I signed my brother into the draft
He died in Vietnam
I buried him in Patterson
I still owe for the grave marker

Chorus:
Bake
a pan of undercooked lasagna
Throw
a driftnet into the sea
Paint
A sign that says POST NO BILLS
Break
the glass of the fire alarm

I decommissioned my nuke plant
I withdrew the cooling rods
I opened up the valves and vents
I let the reactor vessel cool down
Before removing the asbestos.

Chorus:
Pull
the hangnail from your pinky
Blend
the whisky and the ice
Twist
the doorknob 'till it opens
Claim
your patch of infertile soil

The weather's bad in Pennsylvania,
I took the wrong turn out near York
I couldn't turn around until Hershey
Now I'm out of gas and out of work.

Chorus:
Get
a free delivery if you click now
Throw
the only dart you have
Grease
the palm of your next door neighbor
Carve
your lover's name into a tree

It was, it is, and it will be
I had, I have, I'll have eternally
I saw, I see, and I will see
I saw and saw and saw
To kill a bigger tree.
