I'm ashamed to admit that my conscious introduction to Gamelan--I must have heard the Nonesuch recording before this, but I don't remember the occasion--was a recording I purchased almost solely for the cover, which features a young and topless Balinese woman with whose image I was smitten. The program was a Gamelan and a Ketjak. I have since acquired more than a handful of Balinese recitals, none for the visuals.

Some of Vangelis' best work is on that score. I like the score about ten times more than I like the movie, though I'm a little hard on Peter Weir since he never did a film as good as Picnic at Hanging Rock again

similarly, love the score of Gallipoli, not crazy about the film.

Great cinematography in both though

i do also think his Hollywood movies are a bit of a step down from Last Wave and Picnic, but there's still a lot there. Witness is fine. Mosquito Coast is sort of underrated and pretty good. Fearless i really like. Truman Show and Dead Poets are really interesting for Hollywood movies.

it's a drag that after Master and Commander he sort of dropped out.

Just tuning in. I just watched The Way Back the other day - mostly because I saw Peter Weir's name.
It was ambitious but not that well directed. Or maybe I missed the point of the style. The story was decent but I felt it should have been more moving.
It based on a true story of a Pole who was accused of being a spy in post WWII Poland and sent to Siberia, who then ended up leading an escape, which ended up taking the survivors over the Himalayas into India.

I remember liking Witness when it first came out. Then I saw a film of John Waters' one-man stage show in which he recounts a story of a couple who were so offended by one of his films that they called the cops about it. He said if they can call the cops on his movie he reserves the right to call the cops on the barn raising scene in Witness. I guess its blatant and contrived feel-goodyness was equally offensive to him, which I found hilarious and I haven't been able to take it seriously since then. The rest of the movie is probably ok.

Really like and appreciate The Truman Show and Witness is a movie I have always liked, though there are some overly sentimental Hollywood moments like the barn-raising and the scene where he convinces her to dance to the radio. Haven's seen Picnic... in a very long time but remember being enthralled by it. Thanks all for the tip on The Last Wave which I just added to my Netflix queue.

i'm reading more about the Last Wave now (on the seminal Australian film site Senses of Cinema) and I'm remembering how when it showed in a film class when i was a college student in the 80's io went to 3 screenings of it in a week when it was showing and i hope i'm not overselling it but damn everyone should see this movie

I saw Woman Under the Influence at the library yesterday and considered it but chose Jane Campion's 'Sweetie' and a documentary about the murder of an early 20th century union organizer instead. Tough choices.

The Colombo he directed (Etude in Black) is one of my faves, too. Those two acting against each other is *spectacular*.

I met Peter Falk at UCLA in '84 during the Olympic Arts Festival. It was a performance by Piccolo Teatro di Milano of The Tempest in Italian. He was in the audience, and the person with whom I attended the show had long before purchased one of Falk's paintings, so he felt obligated to speak with him. I was fairly blown away by the play.
