Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm
fred:

Good afternoon Jason. I like this stripped down version of a classic
Avatar 3:10pm
Jason Elbogen:

Yes... Very nice I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, fred & Jason. Future greetings to others as they stroll in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm
melinda:

hi guys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
Doug Schulkind:

There is almost no difference between play Doueh and Playdough. And both mean good clean fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm
fred:

Too much Cheveu and not enough Doueh on this track for me. Then again, I'm no fan of Cheveu
Avatar 3:24pm
still b/p:

Play Doueh Fun Factory!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
Doug Schulkind:

Careful, Jason. My wife is a law professor.
  3:28pm
Dean:

You just nailed the real source of fear: AI will replace us as hobbyists!

The "law school is not worth it" meme is absurdly overstated. Read Michael Simkovic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm
fred:

I only use google translate from languages I don't know at all (like Vietnamese or Japanese), so I can't tell what it's worth
Avatar 3:29pm
Jason Elbogen:

Doug--your wife is a robot?
  3:31pm
Dean:

Meanwhile, AI has been hyped for decades, and yet advances in digital technology have required the field to redefine itself, rather than progress concomitantly. We misplace way too much faith in the healing power of technology.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
fred:

Jason, if all your listeners were robots, would that be better than when the audio isn't getting out of the room?
  3:35pm
Dean:

The question is: Which is the optimal robot listener? The one who occasionally requests "Free Bird" or the one who never requests it?
  3:36pm
Dean:

Put another way, would requesting "Free Bird" be a function of artificial intelligence, or of artificial inebriation?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
fred:

@Dean: "AI will master natural language within 5 years" has been a claim ever since the field was named. This was already a joke when I graduated 20+ years ago (master in computer science with a major in AI)
  3:39pm
Dean:

Amen, @fred. (Wait. There really is a @fred, right?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
fred:

@Dean: The optimal robot listener is the one that pledges a lot, then actually sends that money to the station.
I had a sticker years ago that read "artificial intelligence beats real stupidity", but the jury is still out on that (as a sample says on Rex' show). As for my existence, please refer to Scott William's playlist page GIF
Avatar 3:43pm
Jason Elbogen:

Fred--I think it's much less of a joke now.
Avatar 3:43pm
geezerette:

Hello Jason and assembled. Strolling in.
I'm enjoying all the human intelligence. :)
Avatar 3:46pm
still b/p:

So, Alan Turing and Ronnie Van Zant walk into a bar...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
fred:

Speaking of robots and language, a coworker has been trying for a few years to get funding for his pet project: building a rapping robot. The man keeps refusing claiming the project lacks social impact
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm
TristaC:

That song you were playing while you were speaking is one of this robot's favorite songs - Tezeta (nostalgia)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm
fred:

@Jason: At least, English has "it". French doesn't and has to assign a gender to everything, which is confusing and stupid
Avatar 3:55pm
still b/p:

Rappng robot would be tough....mixing proper and creative syntax, going beyond just rhythmic rhyme and patter to variations against the beat and satisfying the knowing ear with style and shape enough to be worth doing and approximating the real.
  3:56pm
Dean:

I know the Scott Williams' GIF well!

Desperately trying to come up with a punch line for the Turing/Van Zant joke setup. Something involving spell-check...

I'm cool with gender assignment, if only because it affords opportunities for gender confusion. Barely related: Do you know Perec's La Disparition?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
Webhamster Henry:

AI was stuck for decades in an almost "intelligent design"-like paradigm : we will build the dictionaries and databases, and it will know what we have told it to know. For the last 15 years or so, it's been more like, we now have the power and storage to throw lots of data at a self organizing network, and that's how machine learning and modeling will proceed. These processes are only getting faster, and I think Kurzweil is right in stating that this is an exponential process, not a linear one. Do not be fooled by the small amount of "progress" in AI - the principles its based on now are more like what happens biologically.
Avatar 3:58pm
Jason Elbogen:

Let's have a contest: Which of you can respond to this comment with a comment that most convincingly proves he/she/it is not a robot.
  4:00pm
Dean:

I just wonder what is being measured, linearly or exponentially.

Aha! The counter-Turing!
Avatar 4:01pm
Jason Elbogen:

[By the way, Fred or anyone listeining--can you read Japanese, by chance?]
  4:01pm
Dean:

If I can read Japanese, it will be purely by chance.
Avatar 4:01pm
Jason Elbogen:

[I know a robot would be able to, as well. So feel free to chime in, my non-carbon-based friends]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
fred:

Los Emes Del Oso! Oso El Roto himself will make a rare appearance back in France next month, I'm really looking forward to this show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm
fred:

@Jason: Was that Dadalu on vocals? The voice seemed familiar...
Avatar 4:11pm
Jason Elbogen:

Fred--which song, the Russian rap one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
fred:

@Jason: No, Colectivo Etéreo. I found a facebook page, but it asks me to login to see the "about" page. It could be her, she'll be performing at the same show next month
Avatar 4:19pm
Scraps:

I'M NOT A ROBOT. I MISTAKES MAKE. SEE. ME HUMAN.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
Rich in Washington:

I watched the ('78, I think) episode of SNL with Carrie Fisher on it the other night, and in it, a recurring skit I've always loved - Bad (fill in the blank) with Leonard Pinth Garnell. This time it was Bad Red Chinese Opera. It was pretty hilarious.
I can see now why people thought early SNL was so cultish and intellectual - maybe too much so for its own good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
fred:

Doug hasn't posted since you called his wife a robot. The stream has been growing so fast lately, he's probably swamped with applications
Avatar 4:23pm
Jason Elbogen:

Sorry, Fred... I don't know much about Colectivo Etereo. It was a CD-R in the new bin I just came across before the show.
Avatar 4:23pm
Jason Elbogen:

Maybe Doug has been eliminated by his robot wife.
Avatar 4:24pm
Jason Elbogen:

First they convince you they are human, and then they kill you.
Avatar 4:25pm
Scraps:

ROBOTS ARE NICE. WE DON'T KILL MUCH. I MEAN THEM. SEE I MAKE MISTAKES I TELL YOU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
Webhamster Henry:

Hi Jason: paste in these Cyrillic characters for the album for "Dzaibatsu Point": Вот почему становишься революционером ("That's why you became a revolutionary") and the track is "Алпокалипсис нау" - Apocalypse Now"
Avatar 4:27pm
Jason Elbogen:

How are the robots enjoying this track? Had enough? Should I fade out?
  4:27pm
melinda:

This is interesting music.
Avatar 4:28pm
Jason Elbogen:

Henry. Thanks, you are truly worthy of your name.
Avatar 4:28pm
geezerette:

What's the story?
Avatar 4:29pm
Scraps:

I LIKE SPEAKING-MUSIC. PARLANDO, IS THAT RIGHT.
Avatar 4:30pm
Scraps:

BUT I AN HUMAN, I WILL ADD.
Avatar 4:30pm
geezerette:

What's Hiroshi telling us?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
fred:

@Jason: I should have tried the obvious first! According to the FMA (freemusicarchive.org...) it's her indeed: "5) Lo Real - Música y rap: Dadalú y Menda"
Avatar 4:31pm
Scraps:

OH. HE IS GETTING EXCITED.
Avatar 4:33pm
Jason Elbogen:

This is meditation music.
Avatar 4:35pm
Scraps:

SERIOUSLY THIS IS NEAT
  4:37pm
melinda:

I like it too Scraps.
Avatar 4:37pm
geezerette:

But the rhythm and voices he's assuming are clearly a narrative.
  4:37pm
melinda:

I mean "Scraps".
Avatar 4:38pm
Scraps:

I AM SCRAPS AND "SCRAPS" BOTH. THANK YOU.
Avatar 4:39pm
geezerette:

Maybe a lecture. Beautiful anyway and soothing. Sounds like Noh.
Love his voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
fred:

@Scraps: How are you doing? I read about your health scare earlier today, I hope you're OK (you seem to be, unless you've be replaced by a robot)
Avatar 4:43pm
Scraps:

@fred: I don't know. I seem to be, but last night was scary, and we don't know what was wrong, if anything. sigh.

Thank you.
Avatar 4:45pm
Scraps:

I like the two vocalists (maybe more?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm
fred:

This Hiroshi Mikado track sounded nice. But for all we know, it could have been the Japanese Kenny G reading the tax code and Mayuko didn't help because she's too busy laughing
Avatar 4:51pm
Jason Elbogen:

Scraps - Hope you're ok.

According to this cdJapan post of what appears to be a reissue of the Teichiku issue: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/TECR-1007

...the auto-translated description reads:

Kimono Kannon Yuri Goro The Origin Volume / Kisugoro Volume of Conversion - Hiromi Sannomi

[New · Random Expert Special Series] A hit work by Teichiku one of the most famous Ranjaku rescued for the first time in about 20 years! This work contains works by Hiromami Hiroko. Conversation text, synopsis description, with Rokkashi profile.
  4:52pm
Dean:

Not sure what "Ranjaku" or "Rokkashi" mean. (That's me above.)
Avatar 4:58pm
Scraps:

THAT IS TRUE
Avatar 4:58pm
geezerette:

That was wonderful.
  4:59pm

Or maybe the cdJapan post merely shares key terms with the Teichiku record.

Agreed. A captivating record.

That's like when animator Michael Sporn's website got blacklisted. He died in 2015, but he was an excellent animator and had a great blog:

@Scraps: Better to go to the ER for nothing than not going when you should. In other words, your mild embarrassment is better than your funeral

@fred: Yep. I learned eight years ago.
  5:02pm
melinda:

In Iowa City people referred to the Maharishi International University folks as floaters. I guess some of them claimed they could levitate slightly, perhaps while meditating.
Avatar 5:03pm
Jason Elbogen:

yeah that was them...

Jason Elbogen:

yeah, the Maharish Institute. when/why were you in Iowa, Melinda?
  5:05pm

I went to the U of Iowa in the early 90s and stayed for 5 years after that.

haha, I got the lawyer reference.

fred:

If those Stylers were bad taste, what did your wife had to say about this Jackie & Moe cover?
Avatar 5:45pm
Jason Elbogen:

I didn't need her to translate that one, Fred... and probably wouldn't understand the angle us present-day Westerners view these kinds of covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm
fred:

If you pull it off, it just proves you've been replaced by a robot
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm

I like these Chet Long Singers.

This is so Dr. Strangelove of you.

Avatar 6:03pm
