I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

I did a little searching for Max Ernst's artwork and come across a page with some other lively images. www.liladeva.com

Ah! It IS already new year there in Japan, akemashite omedetou to you too P-90 although that greeting is a bit early for us, haha! Happy to have you here to spend the last few hours of 2016 together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm
melinda:

hi Mayuko and folks! Here for a bit before I take my nap.
  12:21pm
P-90:

In my probably worthless opinion, Max Ernst was one of THE key artists of the 20th Century. Also admired by and influence of many other well-recognized artists of that period.
Avatar 12:25pm
Mayuko:

Not that I am knowledgeable of his art, but I like Max Ernst too. Especially his paintings of monster looking things. They look like having a great time somehow. Hard to tell serious or funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
fred:

@P-90: Yet Magritte draws the crowds. There's an exhibition next to where I work, the line is around 2 hours to get inside the museum, then probably one hour more to actually get in. More if you have to buy a ticket. It's one of the longest line I've seen in years. I guess one reason is that Magritte works have been widely used on everything from notebooks to T-shirts. Marketing trumps all
Avatar 12:27pm
Mayuko:

Hi melinda! nap to get ready for a new years eve party? thank you for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
melinda:

Just a nap to recover from my Saturday nature walk...fatigue issues. Spending the Eve at home w/movie.
Avatar 12:33pm
Mayuko:

Saturday nature walk, sounds like a great way to spend the last day of the year! I'm planning to wake up early and get a morning coffee with sunrise and then take a walk in Central Park for the new years day. no party for me either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
fred:

I got to see Thymolphthalein 4 or 5 years ago. Impressive lineup there, but I don't think they're likely to play together again anytime soon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
melinda:

That sounds lovely, Mayuko.
Avatar 12:35pm
Mayuko:

I like Magritte too, but feels a little too clever for my taste maybe. although that's probably why he's so popular. It is impressive.

Hello Mayuko. Max Ernst's picture has dare I say it a Japanese feel to it.

I wonder if Rene Magritte was much of a joke teller.

Joe McG:

I kind of like the idea of removing music from one context to create a new context. You don't kill it, you just temporarily relocate it. It never leaves the original context anyway. It just multiplies, like sea monkeys. But of course I have this attitude--I'm also on WFMU. Happy new year, Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
Brian in UK:

Grits aint grocery
Eggs aint poultry
and Mona Lisa was a man.
(Little Willie John) Think I prefer Willie's take on surreal matters. A much over used word these days.
Magrittes' work is SO tidy and neat, that is why I cannot take his joke taking.

Hello Brian in UK! Magritte being a joke teller - that reminds me of a conversation I had with someone a long long time ago - he said he didn't like Duchamp, said he's not an artist but a comedian. I thought it was actually a pretty good compliment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm

Brian in UK:

Do you think that Waltzing Matilda was the equivalent of Happy Birthday that was sung as the first telephone message.
Avatar 1:26pm
Mayuko:

I like that idea too, Joe. Same reason I like collage art, both visual and audio (& WFMU for sure.) Something mischievous about it (although, I guess, museums are not doing that to play around.)
I should have thought this through a bit more before I talk cos it's actually quite interesting to think about!

ANYWAY Glad to have you here & happy new year to you too!!!!!!!!

Hi Everyone! Lovely show so far!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
fred:

I guess museums are mainly scrambling for funding these days. The one next door want to put out a book for its 40th anniversary, with "whimsical" pictures of the staff. I escaped that because I was in a hospital at the time. Good timing, though I now realize I could have put a WFMU T-shirt in there

fred Centre Pompidou is forty? I remember going over in 1980, there was much debate about the style of CP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm
fred:

@Brian: yep, it's that old. Which means there have been a lot of retirement parties lately (composers don't retire, they die, no party then, they're selfish to the end)
Avatar 1:46pm
Mayuko:

Museum puts out a book with its staffers on it? Why did they want to do that? All the staff from its 40 years history would be fun to see, but.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
fred:

@Mayuko: Beats me. Probably some lame-ass attempt to connect with the "selfie generation". They're that out of touch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
melinda:

That reminds me of the Starbucks down the street from where I work, which decorates its windows with giant portraits of staff, with their names. They're paintings on the windows, rather than photos, but still. I would really resent that as an employee.
Avatar 1:51pm
Mayuko:

Haha! I really think it would have been interesting to see how the staff changed (or not) over time though, like age, sex, race and stuff. There could have been a few with WFMU T-shirt on.
Avatar 1:53pm
Mayuko:

@melinda Those staff at the Starbucks are being punished that way for being bad, that's my guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm
fred:

@Mayuko: Sadly, it's very white (and male except for administrative jobs). Age has been going up with the lifers there. I'm known as a feminist there since the mandatory sensitivity training we had early this year. Had me say intersectionality out loud many times, which I often fumble. Hopefully I didn't fumble explaining what it means (early returns are positive)
