	7:26pm MrFab: Dont know about you Doug, but among me and my New Wave friends, artists like Can and Beefheart fell into the category of: cool, but they're hippies. Y'know, OLD. Long hair 'n' beards (snicker, snicker). I eventually became an obsessive fan (of Beefhearts too)

	🥁 ♥ 7:30pm Doug Schulkind: @MrFab For me it was much more about them being.... white. I dismissed SO much essential music for that very misguided reason. The last 35 years of my life has been an extended project trying to undo the damage of that youthful small-mindedness.

	7:32pm Alejandroool: I can relate in another way, I spent too much of my youth in a narrow-minded punk state of mind and missed out on very much as a result. I also only first listened to CAN a few years back.
	🥁 ♥ 7:37pm doctorjazz: I was open to hippie stuff, I was open to punk, I was open to disco at this time, not sure I'd have been able to digest the Can stuff...took me until the late 70's to absorb Miles Davis and jazz, improvised music followed.
	♥ 7:42pm hyde: heh, it's funny to hear how everyone missed Can. i did too. not sure how. was really into 60's music/avant garde jazz in high school in the late 1970's. then went pretty punk/hardcore in college though i stuck with the jazz and the blues. still somehow missed Can until much later!
	7:45pm Flash Strap: I hear ya Doug. Every time I read "Liebezeit=greatest drummer of all time" I think, I LOVE him, but maybe you meant to write greatest WHITE drummer of all time

	🥁 ♥ 7:52pm Doug Schulkind: I have trouble ranking things I love. I could say, "no, Max Roach was the greatest drummer of all time," and I wouldn't be wrong. But there are certain moments when for some particular duration of time, Jaki Liebzeit IS the greatest ever. I guess if you placed the Max moments end-to-end, they would extend farther out than anyone else's string of moments. But I am never residing at the end of a string. I jut stay in the middle of it, where "distance" is irrelevant.

	♥ 8:04pm hyde: well, there are also, y'know, different drummers for different things. i wouldn't argue with anyone who said roach or liebezeit. i probably also wouldn't argue with anyone who felt strongly about al jackson jr. or chick webb. or that guy from Chic.

	8:24pm Flash Strap: I've never died for Sheldon's vocals on any of this stuff, but this song is so insane I can't resist it. And Liebezeit is like a cartoon drummer, all over the place
	8:24pm MrFab: That Czukay solo stuff was popular on college radio in the '80s ("Cool in the Pool" = classic). He was often accompanied by such young disciples as Jah Wobble and an up-and-coming guitarist known as "The Edge." Funny. It's like if Bono backed up Nina Hagen or sumthin.

He just trashes a lot of albums that I think are crucial, masterpieces, and heavily favors the heavy metal/heavy psych aspects, which I think are often the least original things in the canon. 	♥ 8:38pm hyde: my take on Julian Cope is sort of like my take on Robert Christgau. i disagree many times; but i respect the breadth of what they've listened to and reviewed for general consumption.
	8:39pm Flash Strap: Me too, Rab. Those kind of loose-cannon critics are still super useful and lovable. I only mention it because when I read Cope I worry that people will poo poo Cluster on his say so, or something like that. Wanted to spread some grains of salt, just for safety's sake

(Mitch Mitchell, on the other hand, was on the kit what Jimi was with a guitar.)

	9:49pm Flash Strap: My impulse is to disagree, but I am no huge Jimi scholar so I'll fess ignorance. I have always generally preferred Gypsies to Experience, which is technically good but often sounds technical in a way I don't think is good that said, the best stuff with Experience is some of the best stuff there is... though the same can be said of Gypsies. I don't think he could have pulled off Machine gun in the same way with Mitchell?
	9:52pm Doctorjazz: I wasn't implying a similar level of talent or artistry, but, for wow a while there, the drumming considered, to my ears, of a steady drum roll, that was Miles signature. add the show progressed I could hear other things the drums did as well, but he definitely used some of the same kind of techniques.

	♥ 9:56pm coelacanth∅: until recently i would've used exactly that example to say miles was the right drummer for certain tracks; but recently learned that some things i thought had Buddy actually had Mitch, and realised Mitch was capable of hard-hitting, simple drumming also, when required. ...also, my favorite tracks with Mitchell are not necessarily "the experience". his blues tracks that were never released during Jimi's lifetime show both Jimi and Mitch at their best. they spoke their own language and played textue, while the bassist (preferably Billy Cox - also not the experience) held it together.

	🥁 ♥ 7:52pm Doug Schulkind: I have trouble ranking things I love. I could say, "no, Max Roach was the greatest drummer of all time," and I wouldn't be wrong. But there are certain moments when for some particular duration of time, Jaki Liebzeit IS the greatest ever. I guess if you placed the Max moments end-to-end, they would extend farther out than anyone else's string of moments. But I am never residing at the end of a string. I jut stay in the middle of it, where "distance" is irrelevant.

I have always generally preferred Gypsies to Experience, which is technically good but often sounds technical in a way I don't think is good that said, the best stuff with Experience is some of the best stuff there is... though the same can be said of Gypsies. I don't think he could have pulled off Machine gun in the same way with Mitchell?
	9:52pm Doctorjazz: I wasn't implying a similar level of talent or artistry, but, for wow a while there, the drumming considered, to my ears, of a steady drum roll, that was Miles signature. add the show progressed I could hear other things the drums did as well, but he definitely used some of the same kind of techniques.

	♥ 9:56pm coelacanth∅: until recently i would've used exactly that example to say miles was the right drummer for certain tracks; but recently learned that some things i thought had Buddy actually had Mitch, and realised Mitch was capable of hard-hitting, simple drumming also, when required. ...also, my favorite tracks with Mitchell are not necessarily "the experience". his blues tracks that were never released during Jimi's lifetime show both Jimi and Mitch at their best. they spoke their own language and played textue, while the bassist (preferably Billy Cox - also not the experience) held it together.
