I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Good afternoon Mayuko. I love the cover art for Rob's premium. Is that your work?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm
listener james from westwood:

Afternoon, Mayuko and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm
fred:

So fitting that a show starting with Fushitsusha would have a black background
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm
fred:

Unfortunately, I never got to see Kazuo Ohno. I had a ticket for a performance maybe fifteen years ago, but he had to cancel due to health issues (he was in his nineties at the time)

Ike:

Hi!

Mayuko:

Hello, fred, james, and Ike! Thanks for tuning in!
That's REALLY too bad you missed Kazuo Ohno, fred. I didn't "get" Butoh until pretty recent to be honest. I think I felt something ambivalent about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm
fred:

To be honest, I'm not a fan of Butoh. By now I feel it is actually very codified, and I tend to lose interest in such dance forms after a while. Though the mix of that with its immediate physicality remains powerful, I rarely go these days. Not even once a year, which is probably not enough

Speaking of dance, there will be a weird show/performance at MOMA at the end of the month: www.moma.org...
My favorite choreographer drawing out a piece over nine hours. I did see pieces of it last year (it was right in front of where I work, I took a lot of breaks on these days)

I'm still pleasantly surprised to see Mayuko on Saturdays.

I once had the pleasure to see Ghost open for Damon & Naomi. At the end of the show, they played a 40 minute show together. It would have been around 2004. Magick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
northguineahills:

I wish I knew art and music when I was in Japan in the late 80s. I wouldn't have my musical renaissance for 3 years after I got back to the States. To think of all the shows I missed, that even as a child, I was allowed to roam Tokyo-Yokohama, as long as I was home before the trains stopped, even though I was 10-13 years old.
Avatar 12:51pm
Mayuko:

Always fun to have a little surprise, if it's not a bad one, ngh! Thanks for tuning in!
Speaking of Ghost, I once had an unusual pleasure to play a puppet show with the bass player of Ghost, haha. Not the bass player from that album, but Moriya san who played in the band in later year, but.

Hello Mayuko, is that a platypus on the woman's head?
Avatar 1:16pm

Hi Brian! ... a platypus?!?!?!
Avatar 1:17pm
Mayuko:

@fred I totally forgot to answer, yes, I did that Rob's premium cover, I'm glad you like it! I wasn't sure what to think of it right after I finished it. Which is often the case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm

Yes on the head of the woman in your poster.

This Keiji Haino et al is amazing. From a hard drive I received back in 2012, I've been going through it alphabetically. I've been stuck on Keiji Haino since Halloween. He has an extensive back catalog!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
fred:

@Mayuko: I think that cover captures something about Rob's show. The easily identified parts but also the unifying connection, and another layer underneath that shuffles it all
Avatar 1:33pm
Mayuko:

@ngh He does! and sometimes it's hard to tell which cover I should put the disc back in, haha.
I think this track is amazing too, it doesn't lose intensity the entire time. I think that often happens when I see improvised performance in general, which is understandable, it can't be ALWAYS successful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
fred:

Keiji Haino will play in Paris in late May, a collab with Merzbow and Balazs Pandi. Exciting enough? Afrirampo is opening!!! I so need to get a ticket to this show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm
northguineahills:

Yeah, 90% of his album covers are a thick black border w/ a back and white photo of him.
Avatar 1:40pm
Mayuko:

@fred thanks! I tried...
It's pretty great that people from that generation are still so active. I had a chance to see Tamio Shiraishi performed in a church in Brooklyn the other day, and was amazed that he's still very energetic.

Good afternoon, Mayuko and Vertigloids. TIL that P.S.F is Psychedelic Speed Freaks.

Good afternoon to you too, Ken! Thanks for tuning in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
fred:

One very awkward moment was when a friend introduced me to Keiji Haino at a show. Neither of us seemed to be remotely interested. I love his music, but I don't see what I could possibly bring to him. Interaction was pointless
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
northguineahills:

I wish I was was a psychedelic speed freak. All I need is speed and psychedelics.

I saw Keiji Haino eight times, and it was always completely different. He's a legend
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm
listener james from westwood:

w00t—3-hour show!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm
Doug Schulkind:

LOVING this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm
fred:

@james: Mayuko's show should always last three hours. It shouldn't take a death for it to happen. That makes it sound like human sacrifice is the way to go
Avatar 2:04pm
Mayuko:

haha! well, it takes a death or Disneyland.
Avatar 2:09pm
Mayuko:

I think I can see that you don't really have a way to interact with Keiji Haino unless you work with him, maybe. When I met Tori Kudo (just as an event staff) I didn't know what to say either, and therefore I didn't say anything. I just helped stuff.
Avatar 2:16pm
Scraps:

I know Misha Mengelberg died this week, but didn't realize another important jazz pianist also died last week: Horace Parlan. Among lots of important albums, he did the piano of Mingus Ah Um: my favorite jazz album, period. (Also Mingus' Blues and Roots.) Dismayed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm
fred:

@Mayuko: I guess I'm just not much of a fan, generally. I don't feel a need to meet people I admire, it seems besides the point. I even skipped a couple of opportunities to meet Cynthia Loemij. In her case it might be because I know my mind would just melt and I wouldn't be able to do more than bow before her
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm
Doug Schulkind:

Horace Parlan also performed on the magnificent Langston Hughes/Mingus collaboration, The Weary Blues. He played on key early Roland Kirk records, and he made some fantastic sides with Booker Ervin. What a brilliant and wonderful musician.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm
Doug Schulkind:

I have to go do some studying. Like all others, this Play Vertigo is a treasure, Mayuko!
Avatar 2:35pm
Mayuko:

Thank you for being here, Doug! Have a great rest of the weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm

I thought P.S.F was a Japanese label, but this last set proved it's a world-wide treasure. I don't known the right word for what I mean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Gustav Metzger, whose concept of "auto-destructive art" inspired The Who's Pete Townshend to smash his guitars, died on March 1.

Thank you all for listening! I'll see you all next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm
fred:

You did play Hy4_4yh, so don't get too highbrow about making sense
Avatar 2:55pm

Haha! "Stop Making Sense" is still relevant!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm

Listening now -- didn't realize you were doing a PSF special ... super-thrilled
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46am
Jeff Golick:

Likewise! I think we burst in during Abe, which was wonderful.
Avatar 5:39pm
Mayuko:

Yes, it was the Abe moment which allowed me to relax, haha. It was great to see you, Jeff G & Gary!
